Cook, of Nockolls, wss a ey amunzed at the sophistry cf the mem- ber from Cumiogs (Franee), who wished to make out there wasa war between the anti-monopolists and re- publicans. True anti-monops are willing to join hands on this floor, He was dis- usted with the fillibustering that had geen going on in the house. Holiman did not accuse any partio- ular party of havirg neglected to dis- charge ita daty in regard to this ques- tion of rallroad legislation, but he was remarkably pleased to hear the distinguished gentleman from Nuck: olls talk so affectlonately of our autl- monopoly friends, This was the first time he had extended this hand of ored J long and weary journey. they have still a fatiguing drive to encounter be- fore reaching the royal presence. To men no longer young, trled by severe mental exertlons and much business, this is a serious drawback, but one which the queen never takes Into consideration. Her majesty has now left this, her favorite residence. She has lingered long enough to give a parting ball to the tenants and gillles, and opened for them the apartments closed to other people. She has taken the last of those matutinal walks, the weary treadmill of the Princess Beatrice. She has bld adieu to the piper who, acoording to some, wakes her up at 9 with his inharmonious bagplpes, and, acoording to others, plays them under her windows while she is dressing. She has returned to Windsor after one of the journeys she is so fond of making at night, surrounded with mystery, with closed stations and sightseers excluded. A Rare Instance. Detroit Free Press. “Father,” began a Casa avenue lad the other night, “ls Mr, T. a good man?” “Yes, my son, I regard him as one of the best men in Michigan.” “Do you belleve he would lle?” ‘‘What, young man, are you crazy? I heard him tell three dif- ferent men so. Didn't he lle father?” ¢N-n-0, I think not,” mused the father, ‘‘but let it be a great moral lesson to you all the same, It isn't once in a thousand years that a robin comes up here from Tennessee at that date and exhibits itself to a single citizen and returns on the afternoon express!” LIST OF LETTERS Remaining in Postoffice during the week ——— POTPOURRI. A FEW The Weather ana Other Kindred Topics, Lenten Observauce and Wash. ington's Birthday. Although the past week ended up with a gentle norther, accompanied by & mixture of raln, snow and sleet, which would require & chemical analysis to properly dofine, it was on the whole a great Improvement on its predecessor, the week before. Last Sunday was pleasant, Monday clear, warm and pleasant, Tuesday fair, Wednesday clondy, but not disagreeable, and clear at night, Thursday commenced the preparations for the storm, which finally set in Friday morning, and is only now at the end of its progress. Theo slush and mud is kuee deep, and reminds the people of the pre-antmn- nal day, before a merciful providenoce carpeted the streets with a soft snow cover, when to be stuck, like old Burnside, was one of the common in- cldents of Omaha life. How lonesome the two equares of asphaltum pave- ment pavement on Douglas street will feel when they are excavated after the storm and see the mire all around and about them The rainfall daring the past two days of the week, a8 measured In the United States signal office, amounts to over a quarter of an Inch, which ls soarcely enough to replenish the dry clsterns for domestic purposes, How- ever, It is abundant to keep the side- walks of the olty in a state of slippery smoothness, on which the pedos- trian oan practice the in- vigorating art of balance skating, free of charge, with the full comple- ment of resulting falls, for the tem- perature is kept 20 evenly around the freezsing polnt that the film of lce which forms every night has very lit- tle chance to yield entirely to the friendly influence of the sun's rays Although the astronomical d: for the opening of spring does not arrive until the 1at of March, it is generally accepted that by the end of February just at this time, the winter s practic- ally over, and what a winter this was! A rich harvest for all the coal and ice men, to be sure, but to the average mortal of other persuasions, how se- vere and terrible!
