FACTS FOR FUTURITY. The Destiny of Man Disoussed by Rev, Harsha, The New Congregational Min- ister Makes His Debut. Daring the winter Rev. W. J Hareha, of the Dodge street Presby- terlan church, has been dellvering a serles of Sabbath evenlog lectures, which have proven most Interesting, That of last eyening was upon the sub- jeot: “‘YOUR DESTINY " Lech, 16: “Your fathers, where are they?’ 2 In this new conntry wo are not im pressed by fo many outweard e of ths passing wway of time, a9 vhe in- habitants oi some of the Karopesn natlons ara. Faults must come ard they are not a part of the Chris- tian life, but are rather accidents, When the ship tarus a prow towards THE BRINY DREP, it anticlpates at times a heavy sea, but these casualties are not a part of navi godon, When the dark clouds are seen on the horizon of one's life, they However, at times we are forzed to think of the passing of time and the approach of death. The recont death of some of the most prominent men in the church and somo of the widest known of the politiclans of the land, might well afford to us occasion to coneider that 'we must go the way of all tho oarth. And I am glad that I can offsr you some more substantial promises than solence or philosophy ocan afford. Where science and philosopey end, or become misty, religion begiis and sheds a clear, undying light. Lot us consider 1. THE INEVITABLENESS OF DESTINY The etymology of the word deatiny is statod by Webstr to give this mean- Ing to it: “‘A proarrangad or ordsined evenr or collection of events that mast coms to man.” In novels and in or- dinary speech the word destiny ie used of whatsver is befre one, and whenever writers wish to accommo- date ue, thoy allow the fiurce destiny overhanging the hero fo he averted at just the right moment, In this manner perhaps we have come toimagiue that death will be alike conerdorate and pass us by, or ui least remsia away from us for a very long periud, It is not a pleacant, but is a very necessary thought, for us to entertaln that a dark clound is on its way to envelope every one of us, Cardinal Beauford and Lounis XL both tried to bribe death; but they both failed. How shall we who have not their wealth hope to succeed? Jacob wrostled with the angel and prevailed, but no man can be victorlous wrestling with the angel of destiny. II.—THE TWOFOLD CHARACTER OF DESTINY, The good and the bad are strangely mixed in all men; yet we may roughiy 81y that some men are good and some bid. Wemean by this that the pre- vailing sentiments of some are right and worthy and of others are wrong and sordid. So men may be divided in this llfe into the happy and the wretched. These two classes, we are told in the bible. extend iato the future world, Ifi:is impossible for usin this lifo to deny that some are miser- able, how shall we prove tha: they loss their misery at the momant of death? Out at sea the tiuws of green tell the proc icai seilor whether the next diy will be fair or stormy. So we can tell o the authority of God's word, what will be the eternal Life of a man by noticing the characteristics of his present life. But what if mu have sinned and wish to Jive happily in the future? This brings us to THE PREPARATION OF DESTINY. Tt is posstble for us to alter what seems to ba our destiny. If wo sre living in sin our destiny secms to be an existeucs of exc'uson from God i~ the futurelife. But if we fersake eia and ask Christ to receive and helv ur, and pray God for Christ's sake to for- give us, we areszfe. In this way we may prepare tor heaven and be sure of attaining it. Plato said: *‘You wi!l never have perfect men until we have perfect men until we have perfect cirtumstances,” If this is true, men witl never be per- fect. In this present life the circum- stances are hard, trying and vexatious we must give battle to the force of ecircumstances as well as the forces of #in; but we have a captaln who will grant us strength and insure our vic- tory. Acocept then of Christ as your substitute, your friend d your helper, and your deetiny shall bea blessed and lasting peace with God. St. Mary’s Avenue Oongregational Ohurch. The newly chosen pastor, Rev. Wil- lard Scott, who just reiurned from New York yesterday, preached his in- {tial sermon as an introductory step in the prosecution of the duties which are before him, and there was a large attendance, coneidering the siz3 of the edifice and that itis bat the com- mencement of orgarized church work in that part of our city. The subject of the discourse is found in Firat Timothy, 4:12 14: “‘Let no man deeplse thy youtb; bat be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity (in spirit), in faith, in purity. Til I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to dootrine, Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was glven thee by prophecy, with the lay- lng on of the hands of the presbytery.” n these words of Paul to Timothy we see there was a fitness which was characteristic of Paul's wrltings. ‘While there is In it that which would cause assertion in the heart of the timid, there is also that which would call for zsalous labor and carafulness, But whilesurrounded by the many cares contiugent to the pastor's po- sitlon, woe to the preacher who has oor constitution! And arenot a part of a Christian life, but are accidents, and they tell the char- acter of the person in question, In a studio in New York Oity, as I looking at the sculptor eugaged at his work, I said, ““Suppose the chisel was to allp, what then!” Bat the sculptor said, ‘It must not slip,” ““Well, suppose it does slip.” ‘1T MUST NoT sLIP.” STAR ROUTH TRIAL Damaging Hvidence Iutro duced on Behalf of the Government, Special Dispatch to Tan B ; WasninGToN, Fobroary 16.—Rer- dell continued his testimony in the etar route trial to.day, Witnees tea- tified that alot of blank affidavits, letters, otc., were abstracted from his desk, apd 8. I had an intimation yesterday that Rer- dell wanted to be used as a govern- ment witneze, and I declined to copt him, I told his counsel that I would have nothing to do with him unless he got up in_court and pleaded guilty. He thought this over last night and to-day did so.
