They Fight Their Battles Over Again at Missouri Valley, And Fire a Volley at Senator Allison—Return of the Bluffs Brigade. Some of Them Slain by the Bweet, Smiling Eyes os the Girls at Missouri Valley. Reminiscences, Anecdotes, " The Army Bean,” Paul Vandervoort, ‘‘He who fights and runs away, Snall live to fight another day.” Those who ran away were In a de- ctded majority at Missouri Valley yes- terday and day before, The battalion from the Bluffs Ia returned; quiet dwells in the hearts of our tax payers, and confidence droops over the eyelids of the sleeping babe, On the way to the Valley tho mem- bers of Abe Lincoln post No 29, after they had throst their muddy boots upon the plush seats of the Chicago & Northwestern company, and invarious other ways evinced thelr hostility to the corporation for its action in the reduced rates matter, betook them- selves to the usual romancing permit- ted old soldlers. The representative of Tur Bex found Comrade Paul Van- dervoert, commander of the National G. A, R,, on board, and at once ap- plied his interviewing tweezors, Com- mander has been making 30 speeches in a month, has visited nearly every southern state in ths last two months, has spent about three hours a night and done double duty both on picket, and at the table, He says the G. A. R tronger than ever before, and few of those who carried the musket or drew the sabre in '61-'65 are now outside the ranks. Conversing with Commander Vander- voort the whistle blew for our destina- tlon, It was a gloomy day and the re- ceiving force seemed to fecl its effect, A equad of three or four moistencd veterans ralsed a hoarse cheer as the Oouncil Bluffs detachment shook the hated rallway corporation mad from the solen of their feet and formed on the platfcrm. Commander O. L. Freouch, representing local Belden Post, No, 67, took chargo of the line of march, and guided us to the Opera hall. Woe listed to catch the stir of martial music, bat “No oymbal olashed, no clarion rang, Still were the fife and drum " ord the mentor of our marching was the periodloal ‘“‘left, lett, left,” dear to the hewrt of the soldier. At the hall were pork and beans, hard vack, coffee (with milk too—how it brought back memories of milking thst Georgia cow to many a one of ‘‘Sherman’s Bummers”, Comrade Vandervoort was groeted with a choer by all the old yeterans and was soon elbow deep in anecdotes, hand shak. ing, beans and other provender. By the way, Vandervoort hasa photonraph of himself taken at the time of his oxit from Andersonville, It 1s con. trast encugh to his 200 avoidupois now, At that time he was 0 thin that even Olark of the Nonpariel would be count- ed corpulent bes!de him, and so weak that he couldn’t break through a cob web, Qaite a chunge from the days of starvation in the stink-hole of Goeorgla to the timae recently at Fan. euil Hall, Boston, where Governor Butler was chairman of the evening, when the ex-private of Nebraska, who never wore even a corporal’s stripe on his uniform, was the reciplent of a boquet, But to the supper, while the beans and hard tack were olimblng en the tables the ‘‘boys”, for even the gray halrs, and they were not a fow, wore ‘‘boys” again turned loose in a grand barrack uproar, The old songs, the old stories of the camp, the fray, the field of Thowas who loved his boys, of McPherson who fell, and all the dusty recollections that lie strewn over the southland from Harper's Ferry to Galyeston, from Donelson to Savannah were funn over and some- hew they never will tire in the soldler’s oar, After dinner and the tables were covered so profusely that thoy soarcel, betrayed the attack of the military. detail was made vo arrest all deserters and stragglers, twenty or thirty were captured and compelled to go into the guard-house, 1. e. eat one quart of beans supplomented with coplous cof- fee. Mr. Harris and son of The Mis- sourl Valley Times were found just on the point of golng to press and brought up with the rest of the chaln gang to recelve sentence, They were con. demned to make a ech or be hanged, and choose the latter alterna- tive at which the audlence drew a sigh of relief. Comrades John Lindt and R. L. Wil- liams attempted to steal away on the evening train for the Bluffs, but pur- sued by the merclless provost guard were ocaptured, mvorag with smut and Infamy, and secreted in a coal house, They were unanimously con- demned, the former to be shot, the latter crucified. At 2 p, m,, “‘Atten. tlon!" was called and the inspection of arms gone throngh with—in a man- ner meriting 30 days on cold grub In the guard house to every one of the offendere. Vandervoort was then Introduced by Commander French and spoke on the ‘‘Noblenoss of Fraternity, Oharity and Loyalty” for half an) hour. Tears came from the gentle eyes of the ladies present as they listened, and we surmise they were not far from the eyelids of many a severe-locking sol- dier as he thought of an old comrade whose dylng eyes had met his fate down in the sunny land, J. B. Oook, from across the Iowa divide, was present and addressed his comrades of the western side. Our own comrade, John Lindt, spoke ex tensively, kept the audlence in a wmile. 0. Arndt, a local legal light, lead off in & strong veln, deno tor Allison for so the thunder of confederate eannon, Alllson’s autoblo gressional Recor not aotive at the front, but had ex- smined muskets in an arsenal.” For aman who has such treatment for soldiers the state of Iowa had no use. Monars, Ayleaworth, Lucas, Myers, Dally and others were called on, but declined, at which the audience could soarcely ugnu thelr joy. AEwm y J. B. Lucas, editor of The Harrlson County Courier, elicited frequent applause and a vote of thanks, Mr. Luoas' father was mus- tered in at Council Bluffs and died facing the enemy at Helena, Ark, The Glee club, with W. UOarlyle leader, ably seconded by Dr. Warren, added thelr voices to the festivity. When the Glee club come to sing the virtues of the army bean, the old veterana thought they could teach 'em something, s0o when ‘‘Beans for breakfast, beans for dinner,” was the refrain, all jolned in, Iadies included; but when the warriors went on with the genuine, simon-pure version, “Saw my leg off,” there was such blank hslt in the noprano that it near- ly killed the eong on the spot. The ladies, however, seemed to appreciate the melody of the rofrain, even though from modesty they coaldn't join in the sentiment. Then the dance came on, and though most of the Council Bluffs party were marriod men tho bright eyas and lovely figures of the Jadios at Missoari Valley most have sadly dis arranged the heart of more than one, if we are any judge. However, any Bloffs lady who reads this may rest assarod her husband was uncharmed, Oar reporter loft the hall at 2 a, m., and the revelry was still un- broken., One thing wo feared, hitherto unknown, that is, that the circulating medium of the Bluffs is a base counterfsit, utterly without value, at a G. A. R, receptlon, Not a cent of our money would the peo- ple of Valley take for anything served and we were constrained to bring it all home with us, At no time did we lack the kindest care and most open hospitality, and when the morniay train bore us away from the Valley, and wo thought, as we watched it fade in the vista, that of all the pleasant days this one was ever to be treasured. “ Ratlroader,” J. P. Filbert has moved to No, 209 Broadway, opposite Bryant house, A% RIS Put Up or 8hut Up. The gln-mills of the clty who haven’t produced the $300 for ihe ensuing year will put up or shut up. Iufor mation s lodged at the police station againet every mother’s son of them, and the grim clutch of authorlty 1s golng to reach out for overy illicit scalp unless the lucro is forthcoming, Wish over seventy saloons in the city the demiso of some dozon or so wiil not be mourned by our citizens, $500 would be a more sonsible figure. At that rate moat of the lowest dens of damnation would die era the spring time daisfes. "lullru_;de 3 - ANOTHER TEST. The Prohibitory Amendment Will Probably Have s Rehearing at Oouncil Biufts, The validity of the prohibltory amendment will probably be again brought to the test in the courts, and it is more than probable that Council Bluffs will be the seat of the next con- test. Iu ls said that Attorney General McPherson is preparing for a rchear- ing of the cas» in the supreme court and that this rehearlug will bo had at the March term of tho supreme court in this city, Many friends of the smendment are anxious to have Hon James F, Wilson appear in the case with the attorney general, Two or three attorneys have already tried to file mottons for a rehearing, but as they were not attorneys of rec- ord in the case before, the clerk has refused to docket their motions. 1If s rehearing is had here 1t will excito wmuch interect, and will draw to this city during the progress of the case soveral of the prominent men of the state, L Firemen, brakemen and yardmen; all rallroad men are intercated in |t gotting the best boots for comfort, durability and protection in some way against acoldent. A third fallow gave the cfficers and citizens a lively chase, but was finally brought down. The details are thun given by The Atlantic Democrat: Upon the intimation of & citizan of Benton toww.ship, made in Exira, to the effect that Knowlton was posted on tho Dz, Ballard robbery, of Jan- uary last, a party started out from that town Monday morning at 1:30 a. m. tofind him, The party consisted of Lawyer Griggs, Andrews, Orane, and others. The search was continued until about nine o'clock the same i hen they stopped at Wal- 's to recrait up. While there a man named Strall drove up to the house and stopped. One cf the party went out and talked with him for a fow moments, when a horse and rider appeared, andupon comingup within a hundred yards it was discovered to be Frank Brown, At this distance hostopped and commenced firing his revolver off tn all direciions. At thls one of the party took up a shot- gan and said he would arrest him at all hozard, When he wes within & short distance of the bandit, he or- dered him to halt, bat Brown was not ready to halt and started off on a run. Two charges from the gan were sent after him, the last one striking him in the head, causing a slight scalp wound. At this jonoture of affalrs Strall slarted awsy in the same direction, and later Brown was seen ridirg in the catter with him. The party gave chase immediately, and after passing out on another road they came to a liPllce called Troublesome Orcek. Frank Brown was seen going on a keen run from Shultz's to Mill- holland’s, a distance of three miles. where he halted. When the party drove up he was seen trying to get away, and several shots were fired after him. He was then run to Sam Howlets' and then badk once more to Millholland’s where the chase was given up as the horses were almost winded, and bunglness engagements called the party back to Exira. Tues- day morning, Sheriff Herbert, of Audubon county, and Jailor Radley, of this city, went to Benton township and succeeded in arresting Brown, and brought him to this clty, and Ne {s now In jail.
