She tee. bitantlally as follows: Hud an wttendant in the Nabrick asylum five months, She eutered o har duties thero the Iast day of Fobroary, 1882, and remsined there the the fFih of Augus, thought the pationts oro mes treated ronghly, and in. ccd one caso where s patient was struck with a leather belt by an at tendantnamed Mra, Allen, That wos tho most she saw, but she said ehe hesrd & good deal about asta of cruelty. Shealso saw Dr. Mathow- con once take one of the fouwalo pa tients, named Anna Erickson, by the throat, The patlent was making a noise, nad the docvor did this to stop hor. O another ocoasfon » pa complainod to her that the dootor | atruok her over the head with some keye, and ohe showed witness a Jumy on her head which she sald lad had been cansed by the blow, The food supplied to patients was aboat the samo as foraished in similar inect tutlons elsewhera. The attendants bad a greater variety than the patients, ‘The patients wero clothed and taken caro of about the same as at other ssylums, The attendant thought the dootor was very cross and got very angry some times but she did not know whether he had oaute not. The hospital was kopt very olean. She had never done o much ecrubbing in her life. [Laughter.] Questioned as to what was the charaoter of Anua Erlckaon, witnesa stated that she was suffering from & desire to embrace men, and when the patlent was firat orought into the room, she made a rush for the dootor, evidently withthe view of embracing him, Tao doctor told the attendante he could mauy, her, and he put out his hand a oanght her by the throat. She was not sard whether the dootor desired 0 be embraced or not, [Laughter.] When this patfent did got hold of & person {t was protty hard to get her separated. E. Liwson, aged 38 a gas fitter of Lincoln, testified he had & brother iu the asylom whom he considered was ronghly troated. He went to the asy- lnm to do some work, and fonnd his brother with a black eye, a big cat in the head over the eye about two or three inches long, and a brulse on the lower part of the ear. His foce was also 80 swollen on one side of that it obscured his eyeaight on that slde. This was on the last day of Oostober, 1880, Ho saw Dr. Hay first, arked to #ee his brother, The doctor told him it was not good for him to see him then, He told me my brother fhad hed a kind of a rumpus and got a uver, black eye, but {t did not asmount to anything. After wait- ing about half an hour hour I saw my brother and asked him whether an attendant or a patient had done it and he said it was the attend- ants of the second ward, Hos told the doctor this when he repeated the words he had used bafore. His brother was a Swede and did not speak Euglish, Oan one ocoasfon an attendsnt told him to do something three times and as he did not do it he then slapped him on the mouth, when his brother trled to throw the attend- ant. Other attendants came to the rescue, when they knocked the patient down and kicked him with their shoes, He died about a year after that. John Walker, 22 years of age, an attendant ln the Lincoln insane asy- lum, deposed that he knew a patient named J, O, Parks and remembered his belng hurt about the ribs, He did not know how the injury was in- flicted. All he knew was what had been told him, Parks told him it was done by two attendants named Christner and Gilbert; told him he was kickod by a patlent named Myers. The patlent said one of the attendants told him to come outalde, aud as he did not move as fast as the attendant thought he should, he was shoved or thrown on the ground and kicked. The patient told him he said to the attend- ants if they would glve him time he would do so, but that he was feeling nawell. The doctor's instructions to him four nights in snc-esslon were to treat patlents kindly, and to treat them as though it wus a friend or a brother of his. He had trled to do this as muoh as poesible. He had some trouble with soms patients once, and he had to strike them in self defense, baut he had never injured one of them. On one occasion he was strack in the mouth and knocked down and jamped on, and he had to strike out to save himself, At the olose of this witness’ tasti- mony the committee adjourned, The New Line: Bpecial Dispatch to Tus Bis, New York, February 12.—Mor. an's New Orleans line and Mallory's alveston llne of steamers have con- cluded arrangements with the Galves- ton, Hamburg and San Antonio and Southern Paclfic roads for the trans- portatlon to the Pacifi: coast of tho freight from this port via New Orleans and Galveston, There will heresfier be four steamers per week—-two to each port.
