Omce: No. 7 Pearl Btreet, Near 8 oadway. " MINOR MH VIIUN®, The present city council has passed an ordinance fixing the siloon license ot 8600 a year, it being a ralse «f $200 on the amount collected under the ‘‘masquerade” ordinance, by which the saloon men are being fined $25 a month for violating the ordinance. This new orainance was to go into ef- fect May 1, but was, of course, to be published in the meantime, so as to give all a chance to meet the new re quirements, 1t is understood now that the alder- men have in private conference de- cided mnot to publish the ordl- nance at present, but let the matter rest in the pigeon-hole until sfter the coming city election, at which time threp new aldermen are to ba elected, and naturally the ques- tion of high or low license will enter into the scramble for cftice, and the reaponsibility of fixing the amount will be thrown onto the new council. This plan if carried out will drag the matter into the conteat at the polls, a move which many here will deplore. Tt is understood that one of the reagons for thus putting off making the new ordinance a law, bg publieh- ing it, Is thata start has been made among the saloon men for the forma- tion of an organizition to fight the or- dinance ir the courts, and this threat has caused some to believe that long and tlresome litigation will follow, during which time the clty will be cut off from its usual revenue from this source. One of the chief points ratsed against the high license is that in Iowa, under the state law prohibiting whisky, the oity can only license wine and beer, and can afford no protection to those who sell whisky in violation of the state law. On the other hand there are many who insist that, dtspite this peculiar- ity ot the situation under Iowa law as compared with other rtates, a higher license will work well here and nerve to clear out a number of doggerels and lrresponsible parties; that while there will be a fow less saloons, they will be run better and condicted by more responsible parties, and that the city will receive as much or more revenue than now. One thing must be evident to all, that the saloon business here has boen run with fow reatrictions and little restraint and the better classes of citizens are heartlly slck and tired of the looseness which has characterized cfficial actiors and the use of authority in thiy matter. It bas received a number of signers, and isto be presented to the council next Monday night, which will give the alder- men a chance to show what nerve they bave, The petition is said to have received even the signature of the deputy marshal Oouncil Bluffs' Citizens. Mrs. Annie Peterson, of this city, Is in great anxiety and suspense over the disappearance of her husband, Frank Poterson, who left here in December, intending to go out to their farm in Nebraska, which they had managed to got after several years of hard work and striot economy. He took with him his team and his dog, and after some little time had passed and no word came from him, his dog sudden- ly returned to the old home, Kuow- ing the habits of the dog, and anxious on account of her husband’s silence, Mrs. Peterson suspected something was wrong and began tracing him up, She succeeded in tracing him to Lincoln, where it appears ho was on the 24 h of December stopping at a hotel on O street. He left his team at Koeler's livery there, and beyond that no trace can learned of him. No possible reason can be assigned by his wife, or by any of his friends or neighbors, there being nothing apparently to cause him to act thus~ Much sympathy is felt, and much interest taken by many here, who have known the fam- ily for yoars, and who have watched tholr straggles to gain a little house and farm of their own, and 1e v that their long desire was sbout to be real- ized the husband and father strangely disappears, If you are a frequenter or a resident of & missmatic district, barricade your system against the scourge o all new countries—ague, billious and inter. mittent fovers- by the use of Hop Bitters, whose duty it isto drive cows into the PERSONAL. pound. Bome Less Beneational Oates Attracting the Atten- tion of Offic'uls Yesterday Judge Aylesworth's court room was we'l filled with witnesses and curious spectators gathered at the examination of the colored woman, S.llie Paine, brought back from Mis. souri to anawer to a oharge of having taken part in the disposing of the darkey baby, new born, found frozen to death in the basomont of an unoo- cupled building corner ot Broadway and Union avenue. It wassoupht to show by the evidence that tho Wash- ington woman, of whom Sallie is a sister, gave birth to the child, while these two were at Mr. Green's houre alone, and the rest of the folks were attending a dance, and that Sallie was the one who carried the child away. Testimony was introdaced to show that these two were in the house alone, except some little children, and two of the boys of the family testified that he came back from the dance to get a water pall, and saw the Washington woman in bed, while Sallie was stand- ing beside her, The clothing wrapped about ths dead child was identificd as belonging to members of the family, and as having been about the house, while other evidence was introduced as to the condition of the room occa. pled by these women, while thus visit- ing at the house. The accused on belng sworn admit- ted being at the house on the night in question, and that the Washington glel was sick, and she took another room, and went to sleep, 8o that she knew nothing about the affalr, Marshal Juckson, who went to Mis- sourl to bring che Paine woman back, had quite a nervous trlp. She is in such a delicate condition of health that is hardly huamane or sdvisable to keop her in jail, and on the trip the marshal was constantly in fear that she might grow worse on his hands. He missed one trein, and had to sit in an lil-warmed, uncomfortable seat of an hotel parlor with his prisoner from early evening until about 2 o’clock in the morning, every moment expec:ing that he would have to call 1n a doctor, end porhaps be unable to bring her through at all. Since her arrival here she has been cared for at an hotel in- etead of being taken to to jail. Officcr Morse run in Georgs W.
