In a recent issue of The Ogden Pilot we saw among tho names of the newly elected board cf nirectort of the Ogden Iron Works the famillar name of Mr. Geo. W. Roberts, for many years and still a cltizen of Omahs, and aman of recogrized ability and en- ter; rise. Mr. Roberts fs becoming quite Iargely Interested in mining matters in Utwsh, and has gained considerable prominence by reason of his success in such enterprises, The Ogden Iron Works is an insti- tution of no little importauce now, aud will shortly have 1its capacity largely increased, being backed by the wealthiest and most influential capit- alists in Utah, They treat their own ores as they come from the mines, and the product is used in the manufac- ture of stoves for the western trade, a well known Omaha house having con- tracted for the entire product of the works for a long period. Possessing unusual advantages in many ways, this institation promises to attain a great deal of prominence a8 a manufacturing establishment, and will prove of great bencfit to the trade of the ruckies and boyond. That it has attracted the attention and secured the sesistance of such men as Mr. Roberts and others, is the most flattering comment on i real merits 48 a paying institation, Omahs men make their iuflaence felt wherever they go. Brlliant Affair at the Millard Last Night, Hon. and Mra, ®zra Millard Hotertain Their Friends. The reception given at the Millard hotel last night by Hon, sud Mra, Kzra Millard was the most elegant and recherchs of the rearon, Mr and Mea. M aro 80 well known in the city thet it would be useless to say anything s to thelr characteristica as entertainers. The large and elegant parlors of tho Millard were beauti- fally and elaborately decorated, and presented a fine appearance. Short'y after 8 o'clock the guests began to arrive at the hotel sud were shown by the obscquious attendanta to the dis robing and tollet rooms, where they rearravged their dress as they might desire. A fine orchestra furnished the muaic for the occasion and those who desired wore allowed to indulge in the light fantastio, Tho weather, rather un favorable for the party, caused somse to remain at home bat the jist of names will show that a large number availed themselves of the hospitali.ies of the host and hottees. Mr. and Mra. Millard, assisted by the Mirser Carrie ar d Mary Millard, received the guests and welcomed them as they arrived in the hotel, Altogether, 1* may be ssid that every one was de. lighted at the cordial and happy man- ner in which they were received. The assemblage prerented In the hal's ard parlors was a magnificent one and the lookerson as the happy dancers whirled in the mazes of the waltz, or danced the more lately and dignified polka and quadrille were im prensed with the scene, The banquet sorved atan early hour was a perfect one and called forth the favorabie comments of all those who sat down to it. Forthcoming Appearance of General Tom Thumb and Wife in Omaha, The announcement of the forth- coming appearance of Gen. Tom Thumb and his charming little wife in this oity will be hailed with delight by all aiike, cl11 and young, 1t ie probably the last opportunity that will ever bo affurded to sce these two world-renowned personages. The pariy passed throngh the big fire at Milwatkee recently, and the Burling- ton Hawkeye man interviewed the general on the subj<c’, and says: “Gneral Tom Thumb and wife, nee Misa Lavinoi Warren, arrived in the city yesterday noon from the east and were at once driven to the Gor- ham House, where a auite of roonms was engaged for themduring their etay In Burlington, As Ganeral Thumb entered the waitfng room he ap- proached the clerk and req iested that he be provided with rooms on the sec- ond floor. Aftef referring to his re- cent experience in the Milwaukee conflagration he remarked that one of his reasons for desiring quarters on the second floor, was that his legs were very short and that in case of a firo he could not escape with such ra- vidity as the more elongated gue The party then retired amid the Q629 ot all presen:, After the matinee yesterday after- noon a representative of The Hawk- oyo entered the Gorham house waitivg room, and discovered the general doubled up in a chair enjoyivg & brief visit to the laud of Nod, The sweet repose of the slumbering pigmy gen. eral was rodely interposed by the newepsper fieud, who immediately ba- gan applyivg the reportorial pump, The drooping eyelids were cpaned, when the scribe propounded the fol- lowlrg: ““Well, general, how's your body?" Goneral—‘‘What there is of it feels preity good.” Although the general was appar- ently not in & lequacious mood and exhibited a disinclination to tulk, the scribe ventured another soclabla sally. Omaha Still Favored with Arc- tic Weater. Its Neighbors are Still Wcrae Off. Afier a moderation of eeveral doys, another cold wave seems to be im- pendirg, with the usual accompari meont of snow, with which we have becn 80 richly blessed this weason, Howover, disrgreeable as it is, Omaha is one of the moat com. fortablo places within a radius of several huandred miles around, judgivg feom tho signal ser. vice reports, and excepting very few places, The temperaturo as reported from Towa, Dakota and Montana was frecz ing oold yesterday most of the stations rarging feom forty to fifty degrees below us 8t. Paul, Minn,, had a temperature veay nearly 30° below zaro, Yankton 12* below, Buford 17° below, snd S:. Vincent, about as cold a placeas thers is outeide of the Arctic circle, being 40° below, or 72 ° below the treezing point, Even our Towa neighbors sunk be low the freezing mark, Des Moince reaching 13 °, Davenport 10, ete Omaha was 9° above z:ro yerter- day, and maintained that temperature a'l day. The wind wag very variable in di rection, veering from south to north- east, through all the intermediate points of the compass. However, the force of the wind was very slight— not more than eight or ten miles an hour—and the «ff.ct could not easily be noticed. Suow continved falling all day, but inother parts of the wess the weathor was reported clear, except at some few atations in Wyoming, Montara and Dukota, 1n this city the feathery flakes fell slowly but steadily, the quantity being small, and unless it increases or con tinues for a copeideratl: time the prospeots for renewed sleighing are uot the most favorable Reports from tho w.st last night were bad for the railroacs, Siduey reported eignt inches of enow, Chey- onne two feet on the Jevel and no wind to dnfs it and twenty inchis were reported over the entire lerg b of the Laramie division of the U. P, The B, & M abandoued some of its freight trains and it is probable that to-day will witness a general blockade uot only in Iows but on the U, P. main line, which has thus far had no trouble in mekir g timo with its trairs A blizzard at this juncture would pile up the drifte till the Fourth of July would hardly see them melted. WHAT IT COSTS.
