Items Bleansd Frem & Brief Visit to the Bloomer School, 3ome of the Peculiarities of the Methods of Teaching. How SBtudy is Made Jurt Fan For tho Little Ones. The public aschcols of the city re- celve little attention from a large class of people, who neither visit the rooms in pereon nor do they make any spe- cial effort to learn what s golng on therein. Many, even of thces who have children to educate, seem to be thus listless about o important a feat. uro of soclety, and if their actions are allowed to speak louder than their words one would eonclude that they look upon the public achool as a sort of convenience only, a p'ace to keep tho children during the day so aa to have hom~ quiet and allow housewlves and mothers to keep their rooms in »rder without the annoyance of muddy feet and noisy votces. There are others, however, who take more interest In educational mat- ters, but the press of other duties and tho weight of other oares cause them to postpone vis!ting the achools, and t) cut short their inqairios concerning the progroes beivg made. Thore is no place, however, which affords more Interesting points to tho visitor than the schools of the city. Yesterday, by Invitatlon of Judge Aylosworth, who is one of the board of eduoation, Tus Benm, through one of i's representatives, Fuoped in upon teachers aad scholars the Bloomer building. The short space of an hour was altogether Insufliclent to vielt many cf the rooms or get any very adequaie Idea of the gencral work, yot it was all-sufficlent to got & unmple of the progress boing made, and to sug: gest some of the peculiarities of the work and indicate some of the advan- —All of yestorday in Justics Abbott's | tages. sourt was taken up with the examination of Oharles Wilson, known as “Billy the Kid,” who stands charged with fovgery, having raleed an 88 eherk ok A. W, Wy- mcin's to 818, The prisoner’s defense was ,that ho sold the cheok, and that it must have been altered atier it passed from his hands, The examination wos continued until this morning to securo the presence of one more witness for tho prosecution, the other evidence belng all in. —Sam Hall, who is well known hers, in reported as having struok it big. and missed 1t big at the same time, In a mining speculation In Arizona, It is seid that he sold ks interest In a mine there for £3,500, the purchwer paying 81,500 down. Be- fore he pald the other $1,000 Sam was offered $4,508 by another party, and was then in hepe that the first man would not complete his purehase, but to his disap- polntment the fellow came to time with the other $1,000 and settled the matter, Two weeks late the mine in which Sam had sold bis interest was sold for $2,000,~ 000, so that If he bad held his own he would have bad a slice of $200,020 or more. He now reponts, but too late. Such s the story told by eorrespondents from there. ~—Oity Olerk Bavacool says tn rogard to the stories afioat concerning his personal charncter, that they are false and mall. clous, and that they emanate from parties who desire to see him ousted from his posi- tion, either beoause they dislike him o want the place themselves. He claims that knowing that they could not attack his officlal record, they have chosen to aesail his charscter, The statements are #0 currently made, and Involve such seri. ous charges, that stops should be taken, in justice to himself and to the council, to sift out the true from the false, Mr, Sava- cool should himself take some steps toward having an Investigation, and if not the city oounoll should mont certainly satisfy themselves, and if satistied shall so expross themselves. e STEALING BLACK DIAMONDS An Attempt Made to Break Up the Habit of Stealing Coal From the Rallway 1ards. Yesterday a quartet of able-bodied workingmen were brought before Judge Ayleaworth charged wish steal- ing coal from the yard of the Ohicago and Rock Island rallway company. They gave their names as Mike Benry, Chris Hansen, John West and Hans Marsen, They all pleaded goilty and gave as a gereral excuse that they were 80 deatitute of means that it be- oame almoet a matter of necessity, and in order to keep thetr families warm they had helped themselves to a little coal. One of them was in the employ of the 0., B. & Q , and receiving $40 & month, but had a family of six to provide for and could not make the ends meet. Another was discharged by the K. C. railway the firat of the year and had a wife and five children on his hands. Anotherjone had a wife and two children and wurked sum- mer on the railway for 8125 a day, bat bad been able to save little money and even that little was now gone, The fourth one had only &« wife and one child, but was out of money and out of wnrk He had & little saved up, but had been hurt and disabled s that his saviogs had been speut, On their plea of gailty, and in view of the statemente, the judge fined cach 85 aud costs, but “stayed the judgment until they could got work and secure money to pay up. There has been 8o muoh pilfering of coal at the several yards that the Roc) Island hes taken steps to top it if posesible, and these arrests were in accordance with this policy. Oue se cret agent cf the rosd, J. H, Keeloy, s here now. Between Des Moines and this place he has cansed thismonth the arrest and conviction of twenty- Probably the most lnteresting room in the ballding to an ordinary visitor in tho kindergarten, over whioh Miss Eddy preaides, She {s thoroughly ex- porlenced in this pecullar work, and added to experlence 1s a natural apt nees and great tact. Hero wero fonnd about forty little ones, averaging not over five years of age. The cold wosathor has out down tho attendance about ove-third. These {ttle ones soemed as haopy and lntor- ostad as & play horns. They wees noat- od in little chairs arownd low tables, upon which were blooks, Yruzry oolor od papers and varfoes lttle toys scd applisnces, Tho chlef alm lathe in- atitation seems to be to develope tho {deas of form, eolor, distanse, eto., end #o render the five sonsce more aoute, and thelr use more resdy. At one table wore sosted rome of the children, playlng with little cubos of wood, while the tables were marked off luto squares of equal alsos, Tho Itsttle folks arrangod these blocks in vardous f some quite ingenious, At auother table the little folk had ploces of paper, of varlous colors, whioh they were cutting into trisngles and squares, and atterwards pasting together In differens forns aud de- signs, At still anothaer table the little ones had sheets of piper ruled lato squares, aud whioh they were puno- turing with a needle-like awl, follow- {ng a partioular design. The' general oxerolses at the aslose of the hour were partioularly interesting. The children were formed in a oirole about the room, while one stood in the center blindfolded and a wand in his hand, To the accompalnment cf o piano the ohildren sang and moved about In a circle, until the oclose of the song, when the blindfolded ohlld in tho center pointed with his wand, the ohild thus selected retired to an ldjlfl\mt warbrode, the door of which stood ajar. The biindfold being taken off, the ohild looked about the circle to see if he could tell who wasthe missing one. If not able to thus de- termine, he allowed to call ot threo times *‘Who are you?” in re- sponso to whish each time would como the anawer, ‘‘Guess who I am.” Then he tried to recognize the votce, thus developing the memory and tralning the ear. Another closing exerocise or pastime was ‘‘the bird's nest,” the uhlldren forming a clrole luppolad to be the neet, while other children in- side tho olrolo were the birds. All equatted close to the floor, and while singlog the birds would hop along out of the nest and in again, making much merriment and giving conslderable muscular exercise as well, Such are but lmperfect glimpses of the work being done by the kinder- gartens of this clty, They certainly combine® the play room with the school room admirably and make the development of fundamental ideas rapid, yet tireless, Stepping across the hall one finds the primary room, over which Mra, Cooper presides, Here was found a reading exercise. It was pecullarly Interesting from tho fact that all seemed to read as they would talk, without any of that iron.clad parrot. style mannerism, or nasal twang which characterized the old-fashioned school, and many of the new. When roadtng about some rabbits, the little ones read as though they were really telling you about them, with intona- tions perfeotly natural, and one little gn-l ruudlux, about a rlrh[n Imitated *'cheer up” of the bird, as though she had a bird's voice, Even in th in greds there was a mineling of fnstruction in language, such as was f rmerly called grammar, suggestions being and qu correotn: their relatious, wo il are taught to use la without first learals made the and by 1 long, and to them, mesningless rules about person, voioe, teuze snd num ber. In Miss Kilbourn's room, and also in Miss Wright's room, were fourd classes of geo graphy, Mies Kilbourn's pnpiln were reading what thoy had four men, Weak musoles and nerves, sluggish- ness of thought and inactivity, cured by Brown's Iron Bitters, written on thelr slates concerning Rui nd its cities, They l\vlduully had learned something beyond the hard dry facts stated briefly in thelr text books, some gave quite alengthy and very Interesting sccount of 8¢, Petersburg: wheroas their geographies had but two or three lines, merely stating where and what the elty i, The puplls seeined to have galned either from ountslde books, or from their teacher, or both, many Interest- ing details about the eity, which not only enable them to Jong remember the place and italooation, but which ma'e gquphy:nyth!nz bat & dreary task of memorir! Mins Wright wa fn & like method taking her class on a trip along the St. Lawrence. 8he had them visit with her Qaebeo and Montreal, and the puplils seemed to have a very vlvH eonception of how theso cities looked, as well as knowlng much about thelr history. A pleasant chat was had fabont the Thousand Tslands, the raplds and other places cf Interent, and the &t tontlon of all scemed held closely, whilo their minds seemed actively at work, without the old-time tedlous- ness and “whip driving” process, Bach a hurried glimpse at these and other rooms lrpresses the visitor with another peculiarity, Thero fs tho abserice of that strict military dis- cipline 8o common in what is known as the model modern school. There are no “one, two, three” sort of move- ments, If a chhd soems to sl easler with his legs crossed, croesed they aro. If he gota alittie out of plumb, or varies a degree from sitting at right angles to the desk he 18 noi eont up for lifo. To anyone used to see children march and counter: marck, ait with folded arms, and have overy movement, even to wiping a slate, regulated by the annoancoment of a number, the school rooms s¢em st firet glanco to bo in a d'sorderly condition, but still the.e scems no mischief brewing and no real trouble, That thero s miechief at times, and canos of direct alsobodienco, s doubt- less true, as of all schools, even under military discipline, but tho children somed so Interested in thefr work, that while they firgot just where anu how their arms and legs, yet they scemed to forget all about mischlef making also, Qortain 1t is that the children are lexrning with wonderful n;}\ldlty. and on a broader scope thsn that of the text books, Yesterdey lu the primary room one little girl read very glibly and lotelligently, and yet she had commencsd school only last Septem- ber, following the word method adopted here, by which the children instead of learnlog thelr letters first, learn to read by words, e L Tablo linens, napkins, dnLIu, tow- ols and oraehes choap at Harknees, Orcutt & Co.'s. He claima to be a big cattle man from the wost, but bought qulta closely and shrewdly in every case having the goods lald outside to be called for afterwards, and in some instances having goods specially or- dered from Ohicago for him, The merchants thus patronized are still in doubt, owing to his fallure to appear, whother he is eccentrlo fellow, bound to create talk, or whether he had some scheme on foot, No In- stances are reported of his having got anything Irum,'ully or by false pro- tenses, the suspicions arlsing from the olrcumstances belng so unusual, his appearance not in keeping wllh his purchases, aud his failure to call for the goods. From Thoe Bulletin are learncd the details of a lively forelgn war which broke out In Orawfordgounty, inwhich some blood was shed, bus fortunately no ono killed: The Thompson brothers, two Danes, restding in Uhartor Oak township, en- gaged in a fight with eoveral Germars at the Threo-Mile house, aund were badly used. Denmark louaht desper- ately but Garmavy was a half a dosrn too namerouna for it, and one brother rotired with an eyo that resembled the tomb of an ancient king dressed in mourning, while the other brother’s #oalp lock was whittled into sec:lons, and his new overcont and esp slicea vp like green checsn. Aboat four thonsand Germans (more or lear) were pilcd np by tho Danes, who, it {s said, wore armed with shot bags, | alung nhuh Kropp guns, spears, kant hooks, and all the other pataphernalla of modern warfate, The Germars wore armed with a Inmber yard and aled stakes. It is also supposed that the air was darkened with milllons ol heor kegs fired at the unhappy Darer, This is an approximately truthful statemont, gleaned from the elaims of both sides. As the statements are diametrically oppoeite, we have taken both reports and drawn a mediam, glving ench the proper credlt for bravery (/) and blood. The origin of the quarzel i3 charged by the cne side upon tho other. The Danes claim that thelr wagon was sur rounded by a2t least -fifteen Germanc thirsting for thelr blcod, whlle the Gormans inefst that no fighting wae done until three of their number had been laid out in the eold embrace of a smow bank., The only thing post tively known relative to tho fight acems to be the fact that the Danes were nearly killed, irrespective of the cangen of the qn!nul or the partles re sponsible for tho fight.
