Willinw Bucbe, the fi‘teen- year-old on of Capt, Beebe, & Sandy flook pilot, wus in town visiting an wlo. He came along and invited \Im Kmma to go up to tha beach to the bathing houses and join a number | of women and children who were in tho water. She doclined to go and the boy went on. Pretty soon she heard the children erying: “There's a boy drowning. As tuat was common among tho children when playing in the water, she paid no atteution to it. Soon, however, she heard a woman cry ‘or Giod s sake, is there no one on this beach that can swim?”’ She know then that somebody was indeed drowning, It was nearly 100 rods to the sand point where the bath- ors were, but she reached the place in time to see young Boebe rise to the surface for the last time. He was about three rods from the beach. Hastily throwing off her shoes, she plunged in, and awimming o the place as nearly as she could judge, she dived several times to the bottom, but she failed to find him. By this time John Murray had reached the beach. A boat was launched, Miss Hamilton got into it, and with Murray went to the place where Beebe had gone down, being able to judge more accurately where it was than when she was swim- ming, Leaning over the stern of the boat, she put her face under the water, 80 that a clear view of the bot- tcm should not be cat off by surface waves and rlpples. When she discovered the boy lying motionless on the sand and undoubt- edly quite dead, owlng to the time that had elapsed, she made Murray hold the boat over it with an oar while she we.t ashore and got a heavy oysierrake. This she carrled to the boat, and with it the body was brought 10 the surface. Efforts were made on the shore to revive him, but he had probably died before the boat was launched. The courageand energy Miss Ham- ilton had displayed was [the talk of the country around. Capt. J. L. Knight, of this city, a relative of the boy, and Capt. Jesso Carll, a ship-builder of the village, started the pr ject of making a present to the girl for her bravery. A subscription paper was quietly circulated. Caristmas night was selected to make the annual presents to the Sunday sshool pupils, There was a union gathering at the Methodist church. The building was crowded. Engineers have been known to smash about $2,000 worth of draw- | this terribie diseq heads for a railroad company before they succeeded in killlng thelr man, This is a reckleas piece of extrava- gance, but the indomitable persever- ance of the engineer courts admira- tiou, When old age comes on and his eye sight becomes dim, and his nerves shuky, the engineer likes to boast of the narrow escapes ho has had. This truthful man will tell you how he fell with his engine through a bridge eighty feet high one dark night and was only bruised a little, He belioves tn ghosts, and if you give him time he will descrlbe in a graphic way the strange sights he has seen while run- ning at midnight; how one night a ghost flagged him down, and terror- stricken he stopped the train just in time to avoid plunging into a terrible “‘washout,” This s a yarn he loves to relate, and is the same which annu- ally appears in the papers under the head of ““Saved by a Ghost,” Rioches in Hop Farming. At the present prices, ten acres in Hops will bring more money than five hundred acres in any other farm- ing; and, if there is a consumer or dealer who thinks the price of Hop Bitters high, remember that Hops are $1.26 per lb,, and the quantity and quality of Hops in Hop Bltters, and the price remains the same as former- things to the children, Lawyer N. 8. Ackely stepped up in front of the pul- pit. He said the giving away of pres- ents was a fitting service in memory of the life that Fad been given that all might live. Nothing was more precious than life; nothing more noble than seli-sacufice to save it. The villagehad been calied last sammer to mourn the death of a lad known and loved ot all. Bat, great as was the grief, there was a light shed upon it by the heroic efforts of a young girl to save the boy as he straggled with death. The whole village had felt that it was a deed worthy of some- thing more than praise. They had procured a gift for her, but they knew that it could not add to the satisfac tion which follows an act like hers, It would shuw o her, however, the esti- mation in which she was held by her neighbors, The heroine. he said, of whom he spoke was Miss Emma Ham- ilton, Amid a great roar of applause Miss Hamilton then stepped forward. gold hunting case watch with a chain and seal was given to her, She bow- ed her thanks amid profound silence, and, as the applanse again burst forth, she returned modestly to her seat. The watch is very handsome, and is worth over $100. Inside the case are engraved the following worde: Presented to Emya Haymiiton by her friends o Northport, L, T as tribute of admiration for her h Forts to umm on the day of , 1882, Miss Hamilton Las long brown hair, a clear complexion, large brown eyes, and regular features, She was the heroine of a similar adventure two years ago. A playmate of about the same age wasin the water, a short distance from shore, and accidentally got beyond her depth, She could not swim. Miss Hamilton, who was on the beach, promptly went to the res- ocue and brought her to shore, where restoratives were successfully applied. Honest and Liberal. When the Hops in each bottle of Hop Bitters (at the present price, €1.25 per 1b.) cost more than n bottle is sold for, besldes the other costly medicines, and the quality and price aro kopt the same, we think it is honest and liberal in the propoletors, ) hovld complain, or buy r use 5 8 cheating qus imitations bac . Waters rolated an inci- dent to-day to a Mail reporter con- cerning & blg poker game, in which Senator John P. Jones, of Nevada, was a player. Waters was in the employ of certain congressmon around the capitol at Washington for many years, and his statement may be ac- copted as true, 1t was several yoars ago, before the willionaire had be- come thoroughly posted in tho ways of Waehington society. Almost be- fore he had thoroughly warmed his seat in the senate he was introduced into the District club, of which Boss Shepherd was a prominent member. Poker at that time was a prominent recreation of the club, and Jones was induced to take a hand, Although a good poker player, he retired from the game a loser to the amount of $70,000. The senator, having a fow silver mines at his back for pockot money, was game, and did not allow the least expressien of chagrin or dis- trust to eseape him. The next moruing he telegraphed to one of the most expert card sharps in Vircinia City. Fight days aftor- ward the gamhler arrived in Wash- ington, dressed in a very expeneive suit of clothes and sporting a emall fortune in the way of diamouds, Joues introduced him to the club as a min- ing millionalre from Nevada, sad the starroute frauds and navy-yard thieves immediately made artangements to pluck him.” He accopted an invita- tion toplay. Tho stakes ran high, and the spurlons millionaire was well cup- plied with Jones' money, At the end of the tournament the stranger rose from the table the winner of $300,000 of the club, It was asevere blow to the ringsters, but they made the peo- ple of the United States pay it back to them indirectly and in shert order.
