Judge Reed Lets Oarpenter Lightly, and Gives Others Abouc Three iears, ofr Saturday was an interesting day in the distric urt, the prisoners who wore convicted being to up receis their sentences, There was consider. able cariosity naturally arcused as to what Carpenter, the bigamist, would get as a punishment, To the surprize of those who expected to hear a five year's sentence prononnced, Judge Reod gave the young man only one year in the penitentiary, The points raised in Carpenter's fa- vor were that his Virginia wife had been gossiped about, and that he belioving the stories deserted her, and that he hoard afterwards that she had got adivorce teom him. He therefore moved and married the Council Bluffs giel, He there learred that bis first wife had not got a di- vorce, aud he left there until he could got one himeelf, and before duirg eo was arrested. His avowed purpose now is to get a divorce from his Vir- ginia wife, and marry and live with the one here as soon as he serves the term in prison. Judge Reed’s sym pathy seemed to have been tonched, and he lightenrd the scntence much more than was expected by the pubiic, The other prisoners did not get oft 0 easily.
