Some time Friday night or Saturday morning burglars visited the residence of . A. Nash, genoral western agent | of the Chioago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railway, his house being located on Oakland avenue. They gatted an en- trance by a cellar window, and so noiselessly and thoroughly did they ransack the house that they snceeeded in getting away with from $300 to $400 worth of jewelry without awak ing any of the family, they not know- tog of the loss until awakening the next morning. Among the articles taken was a valuable ring and other jewelry, suita of clothing, bobts, overcoat, silverware, and in fact varietyfof euch things as the thieves though* they could use or diepose of. The matter was reported to the police Baturday, but no clue has been gained yet leading to either the properiy or the takers. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL RALD, On the same night some one visited the saloon of Wagner & Myers, on Broadway. An entrance was appar ently gained by prying open the rear door on the alley, and a quantity ot cigars and liquors taken, the exsot amount ot which it is difficult to dotermine. Some diamonds belong ing to Mr. Wagnor wore also stolen, and proved the chief loss. Mr. Wag- ner had placed them in the cash drawer at the bar, they being o dia- mond stud valued at $100 and a dia- mond ring valued at $150, Both of these weregoue. 'here was a colored man who slept as usual in a room un- der the stairway, bat he lieard no noise during the night and could give no light upon the affair, The dog which generally stands gnard over the place at night disappeared the day be- toroi‘bnt came around the next day, he having apparently been spirited away by the thieves for a purpose. No clue has been found to the thieves yot. AHEY HELP THEMSELVES TO LUNCH, Prowlers visited the residence of T. J. Evans, No, 720 South Seventh stroet, the same night. They gained an entrance by the sammer kitchen, and seemed to have confined their en- ergies and devoted their time to feasts ing upon such articles as they there found, They ate heartily, and were probably frightened away before they had time to look through the rest of the house, and hence Mr. Evans was let off very lightly. ANOTHER DIAMOND STOLEN, 0O, 8, Hungerford, a traveling man representing a Chicago jewelry house, was the losor of a valuable diamond ring on Satarday night or Buuday morning. On retiring to his room at the Ogden houso ¥riday night he placed his pocketbook, containing a goodly amount, upon the top of the dressing case, and also placed there his diamond ring. On awakening yesterday morning he ualocked the door and rang up a ball boy to have & fire built, while he went back to bed. It is supposed that tho fellow who built the fire, slipped the ring into his pocket, while getting some matches from the dressing case, as the diamond disap- peared abour that time. In conse- quenes the colored fire builder was ar- rested by Officer Sterling. Ho gave his name as Frank Washington, and was locked up at the calaboose. He nearly suoceeded in escaping from there, for when the officers went into the cell to get him for the purpose of transferring him to the county jall, it was discovered that he had made a hole 'T:he floor, leading to the base- ment below, and was evidently await- ing an opportunity to slip through and pass out to the street. REACHED FOR A REVOLVER, Officor Morae yesterday arrested a young man named Ed. Inman charged With etealing a revolver from V K J. Morris. Inman’s explanation of the teking was that Morris owed him for work, and would not pay him. The Macedonia Tribune takes ocoa- sion to charge that the agents of the Towa Live Biock Insurance company have been insuring farmers “‘against their wishes,” and makes several oth- er very serious mistakes in regard to terms and the workings of the com. pany. The facts are that the auditor of state, after a full examination and investigation in atrict conformity with the requirements of the law, has is- sued & certificate authorising the com- pany to transact the business of insur- ing live stook againet theft or death ‘The requirements of the law have been fully complied with, which is s suffi- clent and _official guarantee that the company is respousible. As to the plan of mutual insurence the company does not feel it to be necessary to defend that, as wmany of the most successful companies doing busi- ness in this and other statcs are mutusl companies. The animus of the fling made at the company, doubt- leas cmavates from a party near there, who claimed payment from the com- pany for the death of & balky horse, caused by a violent efforte v, L. owner to make hum pull. The company has its office open in this ity six days i ‘| the week, and anyone "hLaving Jjuet { claims sgainst it will find it ready und willing to meet them fairly and promptly, as the numerous loases pald its patrous are evidence. The com- vsny is doing a large and prosperous usiness, and covering the state with W hile to eall sud examine 1 he |i's agents. It f here for busin il gh et {8ud ia here tostay, and itfiuvites sny and all to call and satisfy themselves, The company, moreover, say that parties insuring and afterwards chang- ing their minds, have the privilege of paying what may bo the cost of their policy and withdrawing at any time, &8 in other componies, The Tribune should hereafter make at lenat reasonable inveatigation before making such serious mistakes as in the article referred to — PERSONAL. ruse, of Cincinnati, is at the Ogden, De. Prrer KArBerG, Publisher Staats Anzeiger, Lincoln, Nebraska, A Close Call. On Saturday evening there was a narrow escape from a serious accident on lower Main street, caused by a col- lislon between a street car and 'bus. Both vehicles were coming from the trains, well loaded with passengers, and had reached a place in the street just southof the B. & M. railway track, and just in front of the new warehouse being built there, A groat pile of brick had narrowed the street at that point, and the 'bus was put in the pocket between this vile of brick and the street. A whifflotree of the 'bus caught on the brick, , the windows on that side were broken and two or three bricks came tumbling through among the affrighted passengers, Fortunately no sertous damage resulted, though both osr and 'bus were moving along at a fair rate of speed. The driver of the Main street car was at the time inside collecting fares, leaving a colored man to dfive for a few minutes, so that re- liovea the regular driver from any oensure.
