Winter Quarters Provided for the Animale in the Central Park New York Journal I have seen an owl here which some- what reaembles Ben Butler. This is an odd and bad-looking owl, Some one t1d me that he probably had been out ‘‘late o' nights,” and taken too much ‘‘eye-water.” Of the birds and animals generally which composo the menazerio it may be said that they were never ia a bet- ter condition at the beginning of the oold or winter season than they are this year, The collection has been somewhat onlarged by donations during the past season and by temporiry exhibits of showmen. New and attractive bear cages wore made during the summer, Six black bruins were recently pro- sented to the menagerie, and are now in the cages. A polar bear owned by a showman is also temporarily on ex. hibition, A lama was born in the menag- erio a fow days ngo.” It has a long neck and white wool, and resembles a amb, THE AFRICAN OSTRICHYS, are the most recent valuable addition to the goneral collection. They are compoaed of ten pairs and two odd hens. Theso animals are owned by Dr. Protheroe, an Englishman, who for several years past hes been auccessfnlly engaged in ostrich farm- ing in Buenos Ayres, About two weeks ago he arrived with these long- legged, long-necked and awkward birds and placed them temporarily in the menagerie, He brotight them to Twenty-two South African ostriches & E-OMAHA WEDNE D:\Y them in a good, healthy condition, 1f they are fed every day they are apt to get ‘off,’ or stok of food. Wo have bought for the winter's use 500 bales of good hay, which will keep the cat- tlo aud shecp,” . “‘What is the appropristion for the support of this monagerie?” It is only $18,000 a yenr. Of this sam 40 per cent is spent in repairs and improvements, and the remaindor is used for food and ealarles. This leaves nothing for the purchase of animals and birds, The buildings are becoming dilapidated and need repairing vory much, We ought to have §30,000 & year to run the men. agerio as it should be, The sheop which ware sold brought about £500, but this was putinto the sinking fund of the cily, Now, if we had the bene- fit of this sum, we could buy some animals, A MALE 11GER NEEDED ‘‘We need a male tiger and a fomale leopard. Our pair of lions are getting to be pretty old, too. They havo boen here for fifteon years, and now are too old for breeding purposes. We ought to have an elephant, We had one hero temporarily. The park com. mission asked for an appropriation of 000 this year for the uses of the menagerie, but the board of estimate and appointment out it down and gave us only $18,000. A, Conklin, the obllging director of the menagerie, has furn. ished me with many interesting facts about the arrangements for wintering the animals, birds, etc., the provisions +| made tor them, how they are fed, what thn{ eat, the donations and the needs of the menagerie in order to make it creditable and attractive. All the animals have boen housed for the winter, They were putin just before the last severe rain #torm. The camels and South African cattle are in their stalls. The African buffaloes were put over into the sheepfold, There are five of them., They are so ugly-tempered that Mr. Conklin said he could not safely keep them in stalls. These an- imals are great butters, and the stalls would not stand the pushing they would give them, The bigons will remaln in their open cages, That old bison which had been kept here for about fifteen years died free upon application. 1t is organized under the )}uunranoe Laws of Iowa, and is the only legalized and legiti. mate institution of the kind in the country., Its officers and managers are among the most prominent bus. iness men in Cedar Rapids, inclading bankers, the postmaster, capitalists, railway managers, rance men, leaaing lawyers, physioi: and other reliable citizens, Over $16,000 has already been paid to members. There are two more, twelve years old, for breeding purposes, and a calf two months old, which takes the place of the dead bison, ! The macaws and cockatoes, num- bering altogether about fifty or sixty, remain in the cages they now occupy all the year round. The side windows of the monkey house have been closed for the winter, and the building is now heated. The temperature is kept at about 70 de- grees all the time. There are about fifty monkeys now. The other day a lemur, a race species of the monkey tribe from Madagascar, was presented to the menagerie, Its head resembles that of & hound. There have also baen just received a lot of male Rhesus monkeys, The great trouble with monkeys is that they come here so young that before they can get acclimatized they die. The breakfast of these animals consists of bread and milk, apples and boiled rice, and thetr afternoon food is dry bread and some apples, They pick up cake, nuts and other luxuries from the visitors, The sea lions remain out all winter, Houses, however, are provided for them if they want to get inside at any time, If the water in their tanks freezes over at night the ice is always broken in the morning. The pelicans, storks and oranes are still out of doors, They are not housed until freezing weather comes. The swans will be housed about the 20:h ot this month.
