A Procers in the Manufacture of Iron ‘Which Wil Digpense With Puddiiog. Titaburg Specla! DI pateh to (he Chicago Tri bune. A movement is on foot in Wheeling to utterly revolutionizs the iron mon- ~ | ufacturing business of that vity and oi the whole country. The enterprise of the iron and nail manufacturers there is to do entirely away with puddling, puddlors, and, of “course, puddlors’ strikes, A tyndicats was formed in Wheeling, the scene of the recont troublesowme strike idea, to carry o rthla ve held a series ¢ ons, the result of has been the readiog of one of Wheel ing's most pr mill-manage Frank J, Hes ) this city range the iminarios for putt plan in i op some persua: ed informatio To do away with puddling. tho only method to be pursued by the syndi- cate is to use & low grade of open henrth or Beesemer steel in making nails, This movement has hbeen started by the nail manufacturers of Wheeling, and my object in being in this city is to further their plain. I have had nuwerous blowa of soft steel made at the Bessomer eteel works at Braddock’s and each blow accurateiy analyzed. This soft ateel has been made into nail plate and quietly slipped into the Wheeling milis, and cut into nails, without the nailers being able to discover the difference between it and common nail iron. Our reason for doing this was to see whether steel would make nails, The results of our experiments have been entirely satisfactory, and we are now satisfied that we can make nails out of soft steel chesper and of a better quality for their weight than it was possible to do with the best puddied iron. Wo calculate in Wheeling that we make about one-seventh of the nails made in the United States Over 5,000 puddlers are employed in puddling the iron which we cut into nails. These will all be thrown out of employment unlees they see fit to work at some other branch of labor. 1 am in this city now placing contraots where they may be cuncluded at any time most guitable to the Wheeling syndicate, for all of the necessary equipments to be found in a firat class ANDERSOH, | Bessemer works, This is no small affair. The syndicate have an unlim- ited command of money, and will break ground in January for the new works, It will have a eapacity to start with 500,000 tons per year of low carbon steel. This output the syndicate will divide up into consign- meuts, according to the capacity of the diffsrent nail-mills ropresented in the syndicate, and each will get its allot- ment of so many car-loads of steel nail-plate per day from the Bessemer mill, The principal mills in the Wkheeling district are connected with the new enterprise. Such firms as the Wheeling Iron & Nail company, Laughiin Iron & Nail works, Martin’s Ferry, Riverside Iron company, Bel- mont, La Belle, Belleaire, Benwood, Standard, and Etoa Iron works are interested in the new project to put the negativo upon the possibility of puddlers’ strikes in the future. The gite chosen for the works is near the Benwood mills, on the ride next to the Riverside furnace That point is convenient to the works of the firms which I have already named to you, and is only about two miles from the center of Wheeling. The ship ping facilities at that point are unox- selled by any location in the vicinity The Benwood mills are the terminus of the Baltimore & Ohio; the Pirta. burg, Cincinnati & 8t Louis runs cloke to them, s the Wheoling, Parkersburg & Charleston from Char has the v of wayto the Riverslde furna: Besides all these two ui.-r roads—one a f the Baltimore & O! |-lr m of Ohi 3 anda n puddling would be a [ puddiers unknown to samo idoa rifl com- ¢d upon that no purpose fur which iron is now used but that in the next five years would he sup- plied by & l.w grade of Bessemer or open-hearth steel.
