Mr. Blackburn will retain his seat, but Proctor Knott, an able lawyer and author of the fam- oue Daluth speech, will retire. The return of Judge Poland will be the most striking change in the Vermont delegation, but the new congressman-at-large, John 8, Wiso, is a wan who will make his mark. West Virginia contributes an ex-secre tary of the navy, Mr. Goff, and will return Mr. Kenns, now one of the strongest men on the demacratic side, The Wisconsin delogation will be re- markably transformed. BISHOP & 0O, Se BUTLER'S DOZEN CAMPAIGNS. —_— His Several Conteste for Congress- man and Governor. Nowburyport (Mass,) Herald, Eleven times previous to this fall Benjamin F. Buller, of Lowell (or Glouceater), has come before the peo- ple of this section for their favor— four tinves as a candidate for governor, twioe in his party convention for gov- ernor, and five times as a candidate for congress, Thefirattimethat Gen, Butler was brought particularlyto the notice of citizens in this part of the State was in the autumn of 1859, He was that year the candidate of the Democratic party for governor, against N. P. Banks, republican candidate, who, it will be remembered by many of the older readers of this article, was the Whig governor of Massachusetts from 1844 to 1851, In this election, General Banks was elected, receiving, in round numbers, 58,000 votes to 85,000 for Butler and 14,000 for Briggs. The next year, 1860, Butler was also a candidate cf the ultra wivg of his party, the ‘‘Breckenridge” or ““Copperhead” democracy. 8a- chusetts did not take kindly to this doctrine, and throughout the state he " | received only about 6,000 votes to 104,000 for John A, Andrew, republi- can; 40,000 for Erasmus D. Beach, “Douglas” democrat, and 23,000 for Amos A. Lawrence, the Union or “‘Belle and Everett” candidate. This ended General Butler's gubernatorial ambition for the time being, but in the fall of 1866, having gained a resi- dence the previous epring in Glcuces. ter, in this (then the Fifth) congres- sional district, he was nominated by the republicans, and was elected to congress, his oppo- nent being the Hon, William D, Northend (democrat) of Salem. Again he was the candidate of the republi- cans in 1868, and besides Hon, Otis P, Lord (democrat) he had as a com- potitor Hon. Richard H. Dana, jr., who_ran as an anti-Butler republican, Gen, Butler wae re-elected, however. In 1870 he was again the republican candidate for congress, and was elect- ed, In 1871 Gen. Butler attempted to secure the nomination for governor in the republican state convention, and after a_hot fight was defeated by 179 votes, William B, Washburn be- ing the successful competitor. In 1873 he again attempted to get the nominatton, but in the convention it did not come to a ballot, as he saw he was in a minor'ty by a test vote, and withdrew, pledging his sup- port v the mnominee in a speech, Governor Washburn was again nominated that year. In 1872 Gen. Butler ran for the fifth time for congress in this district, and was elected by an overwhelming majority, receiving about 17,000 to 11,800 for Charles P. Thompson, & majority of some 0,000, In 1874, he was the candidate for the fifth and last time, and was defeated by Charles P, Thompson, receiving 7,747 to 8,716 for Thompson, In 1876 Gen. Butler, having returned home to Lowell, again entered the lists as candidate for congress of the republican party, and was olected, receiving 12,100 votes to 9,379 for John K, Tarbox (democrat), and 1,955 to E. Rockwood Hoar (anti-Butler republican), This is the seventh (now eighth) district. Having failed as a democrat to be elected governor, and as a republican to et nominated, General Butler, in 1878, decided to run a8 an independent or Butler candidate. He first secured the greenback nomination, Next came the democratic convention at Worcester, to which & large number of Butler delegatcs had been elected. The Butler men went to Worcester on the afternoon of September 17th, and finding that the old liners in control of the state committee wers exceed- ingly hostile to their candidate they planned to steal & march. In the gray dawn of the following morning they rose early and repaired to Mechanics' hall. This was locked, but a ladder was procared, entrance effected, the delegates let in, and the convention organized, with Richard F, Bpofford, Jr., as president, Gen. Butler was then nominated, The democrats put in nomination Judge Josiah G, Ab- bott, the republicans Thomas Talbot, and the prohibitionists Rev. Dr. Miner.
