Bat on the platform a storm was coming up, and as will be seen hereaf- ter, broke out all of asudden, as it were, and for a few moments the hitherto peaceful and placid audience were paralyzed with the perplexity and excitement. Miss Phoebe Couzins being intro- duced by. the lady president, said: GENTLEMEN AND Lapigs: And Iam sorry to say to-night that I cannot say fellow-citizens of Nebraska. I came here, or proposed to come here, with the intention of saying something very sweet and very nice in farewell, but as I came up to your opera house this evening a gentleman handed me this evening’s BEg, -and all my tame- ness has departed [vociferous chcer- ing], and now I propose o go for Mr. Rosewater, Mr, Hitchcock and Mr. Miller, and if T thought the little pup who wrotethis article [referring to a short editorial which appeared in last night’s BeE) was worthy of it I would send for my six foot, broad-shouldered brother, 1f Mr. Rosewater was worthy of it I would have sent for him (evidently meaning her six-foot, broad-shouldered brother) and have had him given the soundest thrashing he ever had in his life, and I believe this audience would stand by aud see that it was well done.. I tell you there is nothing that makes a man like Rosewater and the author of this article reapect a woman as to feel that she has by her side some' stalwart man who will defend her unto death. Some of you may know my grandfather who for twenty-five years was chief of %olioe, and was also asting mayor, and nited States marshal and skeriff He was » sort of man who neither feared God, man or the devil, and if either of these little fellows here would en- counter him they would not be much left of them. [Loud laughter.] Dar- ing the Irish riot he broke sixty mus- kets across his knee, Ism now going to read one of these articles. (Miss Oouzins then read an article from THE Bee.) Concluding the article Miss Couzins said:—I now propose to re- peat exactly the words I said at the Fourth ward. Gentlemen it came from 1oy overburdened heart, just coming from Mr. Hitchcock’s constit- uents and his tollowers, The fair debater then alluded to an- other article which she said was too long to read, but which she described as making her the object of attack. She claimed it was unjust because she was one of the ladies who protested against speaking at the polls, feeling 1t was too great a humiliation to ap| to men who had nétther brains, sober- nees or an estimate of justice or of right., You cannot, she said, make an appeal to such animals as these, Mrs. Nicholas will bear me out, 1 never _opened my mouth at the First ward. I sald to Mre, Nicholas, this is too humiliating; don’t attempt to speak. But she said I will make them here what I have to say, and she did so. Bhe glorified over the fact that that she had satd Mr. Hitchcock was a dis- grace to the mother who bore him, and she repeateds it again Groans and hisses from all parts of the building were heard at this junc- ture, and it continued for several minutes. Miss Couzins was evidently surprised at this, and thought the sudience would sympathize with her her unseemly tirades heaped upon the defeuseless head of poor Mr, Hitehcock, Hon, James E. Boyd, who was standing near the door, made a remark that some one should defend Hitchcock, and no doubt feel- ing righteously indignant at the in- sulting and unladylike language used by Miss Couzins, he called out in a stentorian voice: ‘“That is false as hell!” Of course considerable excitement then took place, and » man named Ostrom, who works in the U. P, shops, said te Mr. Boyd, ‘‘I'll put you out of the house,” r, Boyd told him he could hot do it and that he would have him out, and after some lively talking Mr. Boyd had Os- trom ousted by an ofticer. Shortly after & young man began hissing, but was epeedily removed by Mr, H W. Cossley. ‘About this tiwe things began to look lively, and the ladies fearing some great catastrophe, made tracks for home. Ina short time all was calm again, and Misg Couzins continued her sweet and womenly discourse.
