B s THE DAILY BEE--OMAHA SATURDAY, NOVEMBER ¢ No Whiskey! Brown's Iron BITTERS is one of the very few tonic medicines that are not com= posed mostly of alcohol or whiskey, thus becoming a fruitful source of intemper- ance by promoting a desirc for rum, Brown's IRoN BITTERS is guaranteed to be a non- intoxicating stimulant, and it will, in nearly every case, take the place of all liquor, and at the same time abso- lutely kill the desire for whiskey and other intoxi- cating beverages. Rev, G. W. Rick, editor of the American Christian Re- view, says of Brown's Iron Bitters: Cin., 0., Nov. 16, 1881. A Little Talk About a Neigh' bors Affairs, A Quiet Trip to the Kaw River Oountry. A Rival's History and Present Condition. Which 18 Interesting If Not Sen- A gentleman of thia city, recently retorned from Kansas City, where he was for many years engaged in busi. nees, sends Tur Bee a few notes on the situation in that rival metropolis of the Gate City, which will prove of interest to our roaders. He says: ‘1 enjoyed fine Indian summer weather during my visit to Kansas City this wock, and was astonished at the rapid growth of the city, and the way in which capital, dicected by sa- gacity and enterpriso, had mado it hardly recognizable by its denizens of a few years ago. The visitor on its ntreets is amazed with the many hand- some and COLOBEAL EDIFICES recentlv erected and in course of erec- tion. The contractors are pushing the work on the new court house, the firat atory being now nearly completed. The unsightly bluffs and hills, as well s the deep and malaria producing ra- vines, are fas* disappearing and giving place to well graded streets of easy as- cent. This is an herculean task and a bugbear for taxpayers, as it requires an almost fabulous sum of money to be expended annually on this item of work alone. Still the operation of REMOVING THE HILLS and filling the ravines goes on with celerity, and the most casual glance roveals bustle and activity coupled with bold and intelligent enterprise hardly to be equalled anywhero. Not- withstanding tne remarkable buildiog boom this city io havirg, residences are in great demand LIKE THOSE OF OMAHA, Tho echools are also overcrowded and a general complant is mads of the want of seating facilities for pupils, althongh the board of education has made every effort to keep pace with the rapid progress of the city. THE RAILROADS, There is a vast network of railroads centering here, all trains arriving and departing from tho magniticens Union depot. Thore is u remarkable ebb and flow of tranetent travel at this poiut, asis clearly evidenced by tho very largo number of hotels in close proximity to the Union depot to accomodate transients, (HE PACKING BUSINESS in perhaps tho greatest industry of Kansos City. According to the records it ranks next to Chicago as a pork packing and ficst as a beef pack- ing point. The cattle and hogs for packing purposes are obtained from a vast area of surrounding country, comprising Kensas, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Indian Territory and Arkansas, and the small number heretofore received from Texas will bo swelled to large proportions by the opening up of the now fast line of the Missouri Pacific. During last year thero was greater activity displayed in pork packing than in this, the reason assigned be- ing THE SCARCITY OF CORN ast year. In previous years farmers had held back their corn, hoping for higher prices, in which they were dis- appointed, Then ocame the corn fa mine, and jhe markets were perfectly deluged with hogs, the packers being enabled to almost name their own prices. This year, however, matters woere reversed, and the farmers held the trump cords. A large crop of corn has been raised, and the farmers can well atford to wait, feed tkeir stock, and_make greater profl by de- lay in marketing it. As a consequence the demand has been far in excess of the supply, and prices have rison from 2 to 2} cents per pound higher than at this time last yoar, Theo statistics from the threo largost houses may ba of interest: PLANKINT N AND ARMOURS, the oldest pork packing establishment, show: Oattle, Hogs, Sheep. CANOE VOYAGES, Long cruises in a canoe are allezed to be a very popular pastime in the east, and the western folks have be. come infected with the same dcwire, On Wednesday two men started down the Missouri and Mississippi rivers to 8t. Louis, and thence to New Or- loans, The trip is supposed to be one of the longest of these rather adven- turous trips on record. The men’s namos are William Campbell and C. F. Joyce, and they started off with a plentiful supply of provisions and sational Foamp equipments. Tney intend to make the entire trip in a small skiff. The Times says if Frank James had sur. rendered a year ago he would now be amore formidable candidate fur con- gross than Crisp. It is olaimed that James would receivo the support of The Journal, as that paper has said much harder things againat Crisp than against James, therefors the Iatter would be the more available cwndi- date. WYANDOTTE, In a short visit vo Wyandotte, ‘‘just across the Kaw,” I noticed residences being erected in every direction, and the sleepy old town seema to have just awakened In good earnest from it long slumbers. GOV, 8T, JOHN, In reply to an inquiry as to the chances of St. John being re-elected governor, a republican who opposed him av his last election, and will not vote for him now says he is sure of eleotion by a reduced majority, for, eaid he, ‘‘the democrats never had a chance to make fools of themselves, but they jumped at the chance to accomplish the foat.” This gentleman continuing said that if St, John had only one opponent the temperance apostle would bs defeated; therefore, if the democrats and greenbackers had pooled thoir issues, and put up one man whom they could call an “‘independent”’ candidate, the two partios and dissatisfied republicans would be a unit in makiug St. John's defeat certain, The rumor that St. John has re- signed in favor of John A, Martin proves to be unfounded. St. John ran 35,000 votes behind his tiokot at his last election.
