One of the Numerous Smiths Pays Heavlly for Learning the Con- fidence Game. Yesterday morning a young man named Swmith, in company with his mother, arrived in this city from Pike county, Missouri, intending to go hy the first train to Sacramento, While waiting at the tranafer they formed the acquaintauce of an old man, who was also going to Cilifornia, or at least said he was. They chatted together for almost an hour, and then the old man preposed to young Smith that as it was rather tedious waiting there they should take a walk up town. On the way, betweon the trausfer and the Dcovers’ hotel, they were met by a young man who saluted the old man with, *‘See here, Craw ford, I've got to have the charges on that baggige of yours.” The old man said he had nothing but a check, which he was just going to get cash- ed. The creditor would not take the check, and give back the balance in cash, and wouldn’t wait. The old man innocently ssked young Smith to accommodate him with $25, Certain- ly. Then the victim was induced to 2o back to the depot and look after the old man's baggage while the latter went to get the money on the check. OF course he didn’tmaterializeafter that. The young Smith spent some time in hunting for | ¥ the old man, but all in vain, For u- nately he had a little money left, and his mother had enorgh more to meet the expenses ot the trip, aud so they went on their way. The city keeps an officer at the transfer to look after these confidsncs men, as the police of the Union Pacific seem to have done littla to otay them. Yesterday while Officer Cusick, who is stationed at the depot, had gone up tosn with a prisoner. this confidence 1aan singled out his victim This mach is said in justice to that officer. They Don't Sell Stoves. Detroit Free Press. Four or five weeks ago a woman with an undecided look on her face en. tored a Dotroit hardware store, threaded her way for sixty feet among coal stoves of every pattern, and tim- idly irqnired: *‘D) you keep stoves here?"” “Yes'm." ““Ooal stoves?” she had been thinking of getting a coal mwove for the winter, and the c'erk took her in hand, He showed her how the doors worked and how the dawpers were arranged, and the flaes situsted, and he talked of double drafts, great savings, increased cheerfulness, reduction in price, and all that, and ehe said she'd think it over and drop in again, Io about three days the woman re. appeared and inquired of the very same olerk if they sold coal stoves, He replied that they did sell one now and then, and he cleared his voice and began the usual thiriy-minute lecture on the Michigan, the Dotroit and the Peninsular base burners. The beau- tiful nickel-plate, the place for the tea -kettle, the ornamental legs—the anti-clinker shaker— all points were touched upon and praised and ex- plained, and the woman said she wouldn't take one along under her arm just then, but would call again. She called again that same week, heard the same lecture from the same olerk, and started for the bavk to draw the money to pay for a base- burner, That was the last seen of her for a week, Then sho walked softly in and innocently inquired: “I suppose you keep coal oil stovesi” “No ma'am.” “Not wny kind?” “Not wone We used to, but went out of the business a year ago,” There were twenty coal stoves on the tloor, but if she saw them she didn't let on. She heaved & sigh of disappointment, glanced around her, and went slowly out with the remark: “‘Well, I don't know as I want to buy one, byt I thought it wouldu't do any harm 30 look at some of the latest makes, " - - BOUND TO HAVE A DIVORCE.
