Arrangements Being Made to Present it to the Mannerchor by the Luaies, A goodly number of the German to und friends of the of the been qnietly arranging to present that It was the privi- lewo of Te Bee man yesterday to get a gimpse of this beautiful tribute, a d a beauty it is indeed Tta cost reaches aearly 8300, and is probably the handsomest fl 1y in the west. It ladies, related members Maunerchor, have society with a flag. 13 of the fineat sk, and a specimen of real art in needlework cannot weil be surpassed, On one side, upon a pur- plo silk background, appeat in golden letters the words —*‘Gwidimet von der Deutchen Frouen dem Mannerchor, Counell Bluffy'—*‘dedicated by the German ladies to the Mannerchor.’ I'hese words are wrought in silk, and all by hand, wnd worked most skilifully, gwving a very beautiful appearance to that side of the banuer. The other side is even handsomer, it being s rich a bit of work as was ever seen in this city. Upon a back ground «f ashes of rcsos silk appaars an claborate amonnt of embroidery, arranged in a very ploas iug design. T the centre appears a Iyre, with golden s*rings, resting npon the pages of a mutio book. Upon these pages appsars the words and music of popular German songs, each line. each note, ever letter bewng wrought delicately yet distinetly in silk, making a wouderful showing of art and skill. The pages of the book stand forth natural to the life, and with the beaatiful lyre resting upon it, makes a central design, which is as ploasing in appearance as it is wonder tulin construction, Nor is this all Above these in a graceful curve ap- pear in golden lotters sud German words he sentiment, “Sg brightens life,” while below the contral design of the book and tho lyre, appesr two fliral branches, tied as by a loop of bright ribbons, and gracefully curvirg up- ward and aroand each side of the cen- tral figures. In one coraer appess the Uutted S'ates coat of arms, aud in the other corner that of Germavy, whilo each is further beautitied by vines gracefully arranged. A closo inspretion showa every bit of the whole of this elaborate work wrought by hand, stitch by stitch, Thera also appears a beautiful Little butterfly on the wing, which bears tho same evi- dence of skilltul handiwork, Tae flag is richly fringed with gold, and fastened by silk ribbons to a beau- ful stafl, which is surmounted by a gold lyre. An elegant sash for the standard bearer accompanies the flag Itis also of silk, hand embroidered, and fringed with gold. It is the intention of the ladies to make a formal presentation of the flig on the 24 of November, the place chosen being Dohany’s opera house, Besides this presentati'n the society have arranged tor a concert at that time and place, and it is ex pected that besides the residents of the city, who will be present in larga number of representatives from other —To-morrow, as usual, on Sunday after- moous and evenings, ut Buck's (Yunker: man's) garden ‘Dot Leetle German Band” will hold forth in sacred concert, These concerts are well patronizedand excellently managed, Gothere and enjoy a fow hours of genuine pleasure, —In to-day’s Brk appears the adver. tisement of Thall & Kracht, the Main street grocers, Their large stock is com- plete, their store is beautiful, and their prices as low as the lowest. Read their and, and then call and examine their stock and prices, It will pay you to do so, They now do an exclusively grocery hus- iness, —There was & merry wedding party st Kiel's hotel yesterday, the contracting parties being William Ploen and Miss Caroline Ball, both of Minden, Justice Abbott performed the ceromony in the prosence of quite & com- pany of the friends of the parties, The German band furnished enjoyable music and aseason of wocial festivity followed the ceremony. —William Rapp, the 160 pound fish, whom Davy Mottaz was credited with catohing in the meshes of the law, for selnio; in the waters of the lake, is still at large, the second case tried at Glenwood having boen decided in his favor. Some of the Mills county taxpayers say that here- after they want the fishers of men to set their legal seine in Pottawattamie county that the costs may be caught here, —As will be seen by another column Justice Frainey rised to explain why he dischurged the trio of yonng men brought hefore him charged with burglary, Th Bex does not set itself up as a court to de- cide legal technicalitios, but it fecls itself justified on the simple grounds of common sense i expressing the foclings f o large number of citizens, who are indignant about the matier. There is no doubt but that a burglary was committed, There woews no doubt but that Hall sold one of the stolen coats to Mrd, Davis, When, atter a burglary is committed, a fellow is found disposivg of some of the stolen goods at & wominal sum, and the fellow does mot care to show how he got the stoler goods, common sense would point to him as knowing to the burglary, When, in addition to this, a confederate wqueals acd tells all about it, it seems ax if there was soinething of & case, o i Republican Townahip Convention, The republicans of Kane townghip will meet in mass convention at the court house tn Council Blutfs, on Tues day evening, October 24, 1882, at 7:30 p. m., for the purpose of placing in nomination one candidate for town- ship clerk, one candidate for township trustee, three candidates for justice of the peace, and three candidates for coustable, to be voted for at the ensu ing election. The Particulars of the Blg Burning of Silver Oity, The following further particulars concerning the big fire at Silver Uity are gleaned from The Glenwood Jour- nal: From W, ¥, McKall, deputy post- mastor at Silver City, we learn that a fire broke out in that town last night, st @ late hour beginning at tho rear part of Dr. Moore's cflice and the postoftice building, which spread with surprising rapidity, and was not checked until the greater part of the bueiness portion of the town was de stroyed. The buildings reduced to ashes were the postoflice, Dr. Maore's office, the dry goods store of Messrs Guthrie & Mandeville, boot shoo shop and store of Henry Kay, Dickman Brothers saloon, Ed. Oney's confectionery, and Hoxie's barber ehop. The postotiice and was & total loss, and Mr. McFall came to town to procure temporary supplies from Postmaster Stephens, until an order upon the goverument THE DAILY BEE----C()UNCIL BLUFF could be responded to, The porte flice | ‘uilding was the property of Mr. A U. Orosby, who was also engaged in business, we believe, in the house, His loss witl be fuily fifty per cent of | the valae of the building and goods on hand. The ravages of the flames stopped at the store of Mesers L. W. Rumel & Co, which was badly scorched, but not burnt. Their stock however was removed and damaged m handiing Dr. Moore lost & part of his library and valuable medi cines. A part of the other merchants’ wares were saved in a damaged condi tion, of course, I'here was some ineurance but we could not learn the extent. The en tire loss will amount to $25,000. It in believed that the fire was the work of au incendiary, as an accilental fire soems to have been impossible at the point where the flames broke out This is & distressing calamity to Silver City from which it will require a long time to recover, Sowerage. R. T. Bryant and David Tostevin, of this city, have invented a device for sewer drain, culvert, tunnel aud various other purposes that promises to take the place of the old styles They claim for it the olements of strongth and durability, combining rapidity in building and great economy. 1t is tormed a po'ygonal arch and may bs built in complete curve, eigment, parabola or most any desired deflec- tion from these figures. 1t cousists tn the laying together of plain cylinder. in double o meave caps or blocks, the onds of the jeilenders are sufficiently entrant _to form a continuous tubo. The blocks are beveled o suit any desired curve and concaved on the opposito sides a full haif cic- cumference of the wized tube to be uned, whereby the tubes are entirely hidden within the cups, while the shoulders of the cups have a solid bearing on each other, the whole baing lad compactly in oven beds of mortar or hydraulic cement, as the work de- mands, The tubes aud cups are msd about four feet in length, « ws long a8 desired, and of any pretorred dismeter or thickness. The joints are all broken regularly in both tubes and cups whore the ends of the tubes are joined entirely within the cups, making the entire work water ught as fast as built. ‘The strength of the mechanical combina- tion is sclf-evident, and these gentle- men invite the criticism of practical men, A 8ad Accldent, Yesterday afternocu nbout 4 o’clock 0.0 of Rogers' busses ran over a sma!l | boy on Broadway, below the Revere house, injurlag the little fellow so badly, that for a time he was unable to tell his name. As soon a3 it could bo learned who he was, the boy, who nome proved to bo Calob Redman Hasty, was taken to his home on Plercw strect back of the Ozden hous:, and Dr. Lacy called in, An examina tion showed that the boy's left leg was broken near the the thigh. His ago being only eight years, is of course in favor of speed of recovery, but at the best the little fellow will necessari- ly be coufined to the house, and in need of care for rome time. The mother is & working woman who is not very weil circumstanced for such an occurrence, and she seems to have had within the past few months more than her share of the trouble, the husband and father dying last spring, and the babe being buried only a week ago, and now the boy is crippled. The little fellow was down town trying to earn an extra dime for his mother, by putting in his spare time after school in distributing hand bills, when the accident befell him. It is said that the driver of the bus was careless in tho matter, and that after runniong over the boy he did not stop to see what injuries were iv flict- ed, Others say it was the boy's fault, and that is the bus came arouud the corner into Broadway he dached out thoughtlessly into the middle of the street, right under the horse’s heols. From & uLegal standpolint. To the Kditor of Tur Ban. I willingly and cheerfully concede to you the right to criticise my action as a public official and I trust you will concede to me the privilege of saying something explanatory of the same, especially when I am supported and ratified by the whole body of the oriminal law of Towa in my recent decision in the case of the state of Towa vs, Frank Hall et al., charged with burglary. Pardon me, sir, if I tell you that my decisions as a justice of the peace upon a questions of law or fact are not formed or rendered in conformity with the opinions of the press, but, on the contrary, are formed and rendered according to the weight aud cucrrent of respectable legal au- thority s handed down to me by the supreme court, Notwithstanding the fact that you think *‘law” sometimes an indiscrim’ inate outrage on justice, and ‘‘equity’ an imposition on comuion sersn.
