Another Move Toward Using Hlec- tricity Here in Place of Gas and Gasoline. Bofore any great improvement is made or change effucted, there are generally two or thrco spurts or futile attempts to bring it sbout. It takes timo to got the people aroused, and to set in motion such large bodies as city councils suppose themselves to be, About year ago a number of citizens joined together for the purpose of forming an elostric light company here, but the organizition was never ting in an extra switch near the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy depot, so that two cars wiay be run motuing and evening, thus incrensing the convenience of connections with the traios, urall & Kracht ave fixing their new store, corver Main atreet and aveoue, in fine stylo, They are & very heavy stock of new goods, pay our oitizens, especinlly thoso living in that neighborhood, to give this firm & trial order. It was thought that this would lead to a contract and that the city would soon be lightsd with lightning, but tho agent would not give bonds proteching the city from sny suit for infringement of patents, and hence the matter dropped. Since then the matter has reat quietly, but now there is forming an other movo toward scouring the elec tric light, and one enthusisstio official declares it to be not impossiole that the city will be in a bluze of light be fore Christmas, Aldermun Nowell, who is much of an eleotrioian, and who s interested in elcotric lighta, has lately been gathering somo facts and figures in regard to the electric light, and it is expeoted that at the next meeting of the coun cil somo steps will be t in the matter. The McCormick company, of which Ald, Newell is ugent, use 132 eleetric lights in its factory, aud at a cost of only two-thirds of what they have paid for gas. It ‘s estimated that 400 lights can be sucplied this city for the same money now paid to keap gasoline and gaslapps to the number of about 504, thus affording more light, and botter lig ght, av the same coat &y now, but this would b exclusive of *tho plant,” Many oi the leading cities have adcpted the electrio light, and if the rig m sort of # contract can be made mauy citizens of Courcil Blutfs would gladly see it introduced here, that this eity may b abreast with the times, and be supplied with the latest and best improvewents in all reepects, It is to be hoped that the council will act wisely in the mat- ter, however, and not juwp into some- thing, only to jump out again—or want to, but 1t isv high time that the matter was cuurllcnd, and if the change can be mude for the better, it would give Council Bluffs auother sup- port to its claim of leing ‘‘a first-olass city," TOWN TICKET. | The I]Pmnm'm Nnmmate Schurtz, Frainey and Vaughan for Justices. d Bates, 8lki and C. Startied by the Blectric Light. Pittsburg Dispatch, What might have proved a serious affair occurred at the opera house last evenivg, Doring the last act of “The World,” the youug man who has charge of the electric light attempted to ramove the lamp, when suddenly a bright flash crept along the wire, creating zonsternation among the oc- capants of the dress circle. The lamp is suspended between the gallery and drees cirole, and the wires with which it is connected are fistened to the win- dow in the rear. When the flash was noticed that portion of the audi- ence occupying the center seats of the dress circle arose to their feet, and men, women and chil- dren ran toward the door. Others who noticed the flash, which was in- atantaneous and extmgmlhed itself upon reaching the knob of the win- dow, joined in the stampede and creat- ed quite a panic, Meanwhile the at. tention of the occupants of the gallery, orchestra and orchestra circle was at- tracted by the noise and shouts which issued from the dress circle and joined in the stampede toward the street. Tho attaches, after learning that there was no danger, busied themselves in keeping the crowd back, and order was restored, Three women fainted, but none sustained injurles. Several per- sons were knocked down, but fortu- natoly regained their feet before being trampled upon. The majority of the audionce remained remarkably csol, Thoee who gained the street re- ported that there was a firo in the opara house, which brought Lieut. O'Brien and Officer Moran to the scene, but their services were not ln‘udtd the play having in the mean time buan resumed, Sinco the elec- trie luh~ was substituted at the opera house in place of the caloium light the mansgement have had Mr. Daley, an employe of the electric light company, in attendance at each performante to operate it. There being no need of the light 1n the lust ot of ““The World,” Mr. Duley has been in tho habit of ux'inq\liahin: irat the end of the third act and leaving the work of lowering the lamp to an assistant, He stated that bofore retiring last night he switched oft the current f the electricity from tho wire which feods the light and of at & loss (0 understand what caused the flish, The only theory which he isable to advance is that when his assintant was in the act of removirg the lamp he disturbel the wire causing it to ischarge the eleotricity which it contained, Harry Ellsler, who Ol'glllbflud the use of eloctric light as & refleotor in a place of amuscment, ot hssten to condemn it.
