Last Sunday afternoon a young man Tyson rome buildeis’ hardware, which he had bought of a fellow who he thought had stolen it, There were locks, window fasteners, etc., and he had bought the lot for a dollar. Hetold the officer where he could fiud the one who sold them, and Tyson going to the saloon pointed out, there found the one wanted, who gave his name as William Ross. Ross was pretty drunk when arrested, but on getting some- what sobered up yesterday squoaled, and acknowledged that he had stolen them, or helped to steal the goods. He said there were thres others, who were into the job and going with the officer soon pointed them out on the stroet. The three young men thus rested on his aqueal, gave tueir names as Harry Carns, Frank Hall and William Parsloe. Their cases will wet for this morning at 10 o'clock, bail being fixed at 8300 each. Parsloe was the only one able to furnish that amount, and he was let free, whilo the others were locked up. Parsloe has friends here, and it is claimed that his arrest is a case of mistaken identity, and that he will be able to show him- self innocent. The plunder which the gang se- cured consists of some hardware which was stored in a building owned by Mr. Wheeler, late proprietor of tne Revere house. He had the hardware on hand preparatory to using it 1 some housesa which he is building. There aro also several overcoats which the fellowa are said to have picked up, and which belong to different parties. EKOAPING JUSTICE, The case of Tom Dorsey, charged with highway robbery, was again called in Justice Frainey’s court yes- terday, but as no prosecution appeared the prisoner was discharged. There will be some surprise at this termina- tion of the case and much righteous indignation. There svemed enough ence to convict Dorsey, and to let a case of highway robbery tall to the ground thus is a shame to the admin- wstration of jostice in this community. It appears that Dorsey and a fellow named McCarthy agsaulted an old man named Schmidt and a boy named Miller and took a valise from the old man and an accordeon from the boy. Officers Sterling and Morse captured the two, as they were going through the valise, and siaried for the statiun with them, Sterling took Dorsey and got him safely locked up. Morse took McOarthy, who was wanted for biting off young Gibson's ear, but on the way to the station McCarthy broke and run. That easily ditposed of his cae. Now Dorsey has been dis- charged, the prosecution failing to ap- pear. Schmidt, the old man who was robbed, was anxious to get at his work again, and 80 his testimony was takon last Saturday, and the case continued until Monday. The boy disappeared also. John Lindt was the attorney for the prosecution, but claims that he was paid off and discharged by the old man last Saturday. Tt is innocent- ly supposed by many tax payers that the ocounty has an attorney under pay to attend to the prosecution of such cases, but no prosecuting attorney appeared on the scene, Thus Dorsey is set free. Inview of such facts, it looks as if & Emmmm is offered on highway rob- ery here, and it is not to be won- dered at that thieves and crooks find in Oouncil Bluffs a paradise. How long the law-abidiug oitizens will stand this sort of farcical proceeding is a mystery. An old man is knocked down on the streets at night and is robbed. Two men are arrested while going through the old man's valise. One is allowed to run away. Tho other is identified by the old man, who gives in his testimony and then goes about his work. Continuances aro had, and the second man is allowed to go free. A greater farce can hardly be conceived. Ti this is to bo kept up longor, there is little use of the law or ofticers to execute it. A BIT OF FORUGERY, Burt Carter, arrested for gotting 84 from C. R. Mitchell, of the Rock Tsland house, on the strength of forged order, bearing the name of another boarder, who had credit, was callod up yesterday afternoon, but continued until Thursday next, ASSAULTING A BOY, Kesler, the third baseman of the Leadville Blues, let his temper get strugglé which ruined his clothes and his religion. De Haven spent the time in looking about for a good place to piteh his tent until the hut was finished, and by the time he had decided upon a suitable site for that » raiv and wind storm ruined most of the unfinished hut. About the time they had got it about hulf repaired, they learned that they badu't located it on the line, or near the line, but on another man's land. The captain was utterly discouraged at love's labor being thus lost, and lsid the blame off onto De Haven, and for a time it seemed that a dissolution of partnership wust follow, but a board of arbitration was appointed, and a settlement effected without any blood being shed. ,,,,,,, e Anouncement. Murrny, Hear Hefore Condemning. Mre. Benedict, who is engaged in the work of eatablishing a home for fallen women at Des Moines, in an address delivered in that city, takes special pains to advertise myself and my house, and ina most unjust man- ner, twisting factsinto the mosc palpa- ble talsehoods, either through being misinformed by others, or by a desire to give something sensational, where there was no truth out of which to frame a sensation, The Nonpareil having given publicity here to her ad- dress, I desire to make a plain state- ment of the facts, that lfi may see what injustics has been done me, 1 never met Mrs, Benedict but once, Then she called at my house, and de- nired to offer prayer I informed her that I liked prayer well enough, but did not believe in prayer in a aporting house, and asked her if money would not answer her as well as prayer, She thought it would, and I gave her a liberal donation for the cause she was engaged in, In return she publicly states that T am aiding in the ruin of young girls, and am in partnership with & railway conductor who gathers them in for mo. The simple facts the case aro that the so-called “‘girls” are protessional, experienced sporting women, who have boarded in Chicago and other citics before coming hers, and came of their own free will and accord. She says that “one of them was socn to become a mother aud that the unborn babe, if a daughter, was sold to Belle Clover to pay for the mother’s board and nursing.” The fact is that the one referred to was not in that condition when she entered my house, but became so afterwards, and as I have always done, I cared for her at my own expense, and saw that she had all needful comforts going so far as to cloge one house en- tiroly, that she might occupy it undis- turbed, and allowing her a young lady comrade to care for hor. After thus caring for her, it seems that Mrs. Benedict in making such charges shows leas charivy, less kinaliness, less sense of justice than is common among these whom she looks down upon as the fallen, As to the girl being se- duced under promise of marriage, or clandestinely leaving her father's house, together with other romantic incidents, thrown in to make it s:nsa- tiopal, and thrill the sisters, is all bosh. Whatever I may have done, and none are perfect, the charges thus publiely made aro falee through- e out. BerLe CLoveRr, Councin Brurrs, October 14, ———e— Attention, Knights.
