The republican convention last evening was quite elow in asembling 1t was announced that it would be called to order at 6 o'clcek, but the delevates were dila- tory in gatherine and at 7 o'clock the house only had & sprinkliog in it. In the meantime the lobby of the opera were crowded and in the auditorium there was a great deal of talking and laughing and members of the press, a1 they took their teats at the reporters’ desk, were ap- plauded and called upon for a speech. There wan a great rush at the ticket delegates supposing they were purchasing tickets for the convantion and receiviog bits of cardboard entitling them to a sight of humpty-dumpty. This little episode caused a good deal of kicking, At 7:30 the convention was called to or- der by Hon. James W, Dawes, chairman of the republican state central committee.
