D. Hood, and that of his companion, who escaped, as W. A Howard. The man Hood turns out to be, however, the accomplished con- fidencs man, Doc. Baggs, who, when captured, was found to kave a large sum of money on his person. The capture was made by the doughty ex- congressman at about noon, when the streets were filled with people, who were led to believe the bank, upon the steps of which tho bunko man was neized, had been robbed, Judge Newcomb yelling like mad for police assistance. The capture had no soon- er been made than an eflort was made by Nowcomb to suppress his own part in the transwction. An officer arrived from 8Bt. They Show Up the Future Possi- bilitles of New Trunk Lines in ‘Whnich Iowa 18 Iuterested, Tho public, especinlly hore, grasp cagerly every crumb of comfort, or ray of hope con rning a change in the pool business, For some time past thero hus been some good cheer over the prospect of the Milwaukos & . Paul road keeping out of the pool, but the countenances of shippers be- gin to look little more gloomy as vhe rumors thicken that the St, Paul w going in after all. The mourners muy find some interest and comfort in tho following railroad predictions con- corning the prospects of new trunk lines, in which TIowa wi)) have no little intorest. The Chicago fimos says: There are several picces of railroad *‘lying uround loose” i this and ad- jrining states, which are fast orystal. izing and may soon become another east aud west trunk line. Two dif- ferent companies are evidently aim- ing at the absorption of these frag- mentary roads, One is the Indiana, Bloomington & Western, and the other ia the ladians, Illinois & Towa, The latter is & new company which is building & road due wesi from Ply- mouth, on the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne & Chicago, in Indiava, via Kankakeo, Dwight and Streator, to Kvithsburgh, on the Mussissippi river. This road is now completed between Kaukakee and Streator, The coutracts for cou- struction east of Kankakeo have been let, and work will be commenced #oon, Over in Towa is a little road runuing from Newton, on the Ruck Island, to New Sharon, on the Qentral railroad of lowa. From ()skaloosa, on the Central road, eastward to Brighton, on the south- wost branch of the Rock leland, is @ littdo road called the Chicago, Uurhnu- ton und Pacific, which, it 1s repnrwd in soon to be extended eastward to Koithsburgh, The impression is grow- ing that the Indiaua, Iilinows and Iowa compaiy, of whose bucking very little is knowa, is reaching out for these ln\hmvuhu‘) connections in Iuwa; and, also, that the Iudiana, Blocmington and Western compsny has designs on the same connections and the same territory, Some peopls pretend to have information that the latter com pany will furaish the money for the | extension of the Peoria and Farming- | ton railroad to Keithsburgh. When | these systems are connectod, as the; are cortain to be some d“yf— muuxf the time may be in the remote future —there will be oae, if not two, new trunk lines across the Central west, which, having no interest in common with Ohxugo, will give the Chicago roads a great deal of trouble, and must become imporiant factors in the western pooling arraugements, in which .Judge Newcomb lost about €3000 Since that tim he has been busily engaged in - search ing for the two econfidence men im phcated in t affuic, and met them | this morning on the corner of Nicollet and Washington avenues, and, recog | Edward | pedigree Il] QUIZZING A MARQUIS. His Maiden All For Lorne Take a Peep at Coun- cil Biuffa, Not by Many Eges. *John George Henry Dougias Satherlacd Campbell, the oldest son of Sir Georye Yesterday morning Douglas Camph: of Argyle,” as he is known in t book, but who is bett known to the common herd as ti Marquis of Council Bluffs yesterday accompanied Lorne, passed throu by his wife, Princeas Louise, wh proper titlo is Princess Louinn ('ar line Alberts, Dachess of Saxony Others were in the party who also | high titles, and to a npan lengthy appellations it took five to make up the special train. Jol. De Winton secmed to bo th right haud man of the marquis, Miss McNeill and the princess com hgh body andgpure blood shared in numerous snd apparently jolly com- | pany. Of course T Ber was the only paper wnose representative was up and around early enough 1n the moru ing to capture the royal train, which was successfully done by ecounting railroad ties out on the Rock Island until the train was reached, where it stopped to give the engine a drink, and the newsgatherer having succeas- fully climbed into the baggage car, gracually worked his way back to the car containing the sight to be scen, the time and distance giving oppor- tunity for him to gather up the need- ed courage to meot face to face a hive mar yuis. How did he look! Why, very much like any good natured, business like Scotchman, Instead of finding = curiosity, bedecked with medals, crosses, guilt quiz-glass and patent leather, there appeared to view, a man, perhaps a little better than the average. Of fine-build, broad-should- ered, unless deceived by ingenious coat padding, dressed in o enuff color- ed, rough surfaced business suit, a soft semi-military hat, a little on «ne side of his head, and put a little back, he appeared neither formidable nor dainty. As for jewelry ho wore a sparkling solitaire, and aside from that there was no display. He had little to say, but what that little was indicated that he wae not at ail em- barrassed by the presence ,f so formi- dable a personage 23 an interviewer, He had posted up, ppareatly, a litt! on Iowa matters, for as the neared the Rock Island depot h chanced to ses from the car window little saloon, with the us:ual numbe of two legged eigns holding dow some empty kegs. He scemed sur prised, and quickly nsked: **Why, thought they had shut upall the ]).ucu for drink in this state. Haven't they?” The reporter, not knowing from expe- rience, could only give him the result of external observations, The mar- quis on being asked whether he thought Anderson or Pusey was the best man for congress, showed a lamentable degree of ignorance con- corning the stato of the country, and evon went 8o far as to admit that he had never heard of either gentleman, and really acked who they were. He had got hold of some facts concerning the Union Pa- cific bridge from a railway guide, and secined to be more interested in thia than in whether Auderson had given a bond, or P'usey had tapped a barrel, and stopped talking about them to ask him for the facts about the bridge, whioh he scemed axious to see. He called Col. De Winton's atten- tion to something which attracted his attention, as he looked out of the car window, and which proved to be the big pile of oil barrels belonging to the Tank Line, *Why I didnt know there were any oil wolls in this part of the country, Colonel.” The latter turned to the news man for an ex- planation, and soon after the twain atarted for the next car to seo whether Louiso had finished her breakfast, and all was ready for the transfer, There sat the princess just tinishing her repast. of the mor, ning, and actual- ly finishing o the same primitive manner in which an ordinary woman would. The news man with characteristio mcdesty ad- mired her at a distance. A hearty looking, sensible, womuu she appear- od, with not what would be termed a pretty faco, but which as she talked with the marquis, sud the la- dies by har side, would light up, and her eye would sparkle, and onco she really laughed out loud e prin- cess at that. Afterwards Tar B wan learned that the cause of this outbreak was the question propounded her by one of the ladies, “I wonder if that is one of these new hotels they are building in Omaha,” pumnny to the mawmoth elevator. By this time the transfer was reached, and, as the royal party was placed in nmy upon the Union Pacific track, and rolled off across the bridge, Tur Bk man standing upon the platform, watching their departure saw a pair of com- [mueu with a white hat glide by, and n up againet l]m wall all out of breath, The Rt. Rev., had got there too late to cateh the score, and the marquis and Louise missed the privil- ege of seeing him, e Republican Primaries.
