Lewiston (Me.) Jourr The big tomato-barbecue has beg in Auburn, If the lover of this qun and Jammed, and quashed, and indis criminately abused until it loses all semblance to shape or identity, then boiled, and afterward suffocated in an air-tight tin can him suppress his emotions and stroll down to the river | bank behind Roak Block, Auburn, where the Durham Packing company commenced operations Friday. The tomato goes in smooth, plumy, and glowing In s few minutes it 18 lost | in an stoamiug maas of hot pulp, to be stowed away for the delectation of the winter palate. Abovt seven teen acres of tomatoos were placted | for the packing compan, It | the plants yield will | put up 20,000 care, a large part of which have been sold iu forward, and the packing factory has started on a smaliscale. The growera are paid 30 cents per bushel of sixty pounc The company has fitted and enlar, a building on the river bank, aud built a platform for batks, It is supplied with steam from Gross' boil- cra, Twenty people are employed at the start. When the crop comes in more rapidly the number will bo ia- creased to fifty, Some of the work- men have been employed in other fac tories. Other are uraen hands. The foreman has been in the businoss four- teon years The tomgtoes are first dumped into large shoal pans. They are set ina steaming tank and are scalded for two minutes, This procees makes them p-ol easily. They are promptly passcd over to # crew of women with knives, who dexterously remove the skin without regard to any suppositi- tions sensitivencss on the tomato's part. When a peeler gets her pan full, a man takes it to a small but business-like prees. The tomato pulp is poured into a hopper which ends in in a sort of spout. A can is placed under this spout, and the tomato pulp is pressed into it with a lever. This one press will fill 8 000 cans per day. ‘The cans are fed tc it by a spout run- from the can factory in an upper story of Ronk Block. Every can is weighed after it is filled by a woman who sets it on small scales, and per- hups adds or substracts a little, as the case may be, to get a balance of just three pounds. The can is then sponged and passed over to the sealer. He solders on the cap. This process is rendered very speedy by a patent capping-iron, cne twirl of which on the cap securely solders it to the can. This is a big improvement over the old-fashioned soldering capper aud is a recent invention, The cooking succeeds tho canning. The cans are placed in pans—sixty in a pan and are set in large tanks filled with boiling water. After they have boiled forty nnnuwn they are ready to cool and are “done.” ‘The company will can a emall amount of corn at Auburn, and have procured two solid iron retorts for this purpose, Corn requires a more thorough cooking. After a boiling water bath it is steam- ed for about an hour in theso retorts, They are held together by strong clamps, in order to resist the tremen- dous power of the confined steam. It hasonly been about a year since it wes discovered that tomatoes could be preserved without a second cooking process, Without tho 1 retort corn must be cooked three hours. The retort reducca the time one-third, The company has already canned a few apples and will can more. They are ccoked 1n twenty-five minutes, Tt will also put up pears, squash, bians, ete, The company will start ite corn- packing factory at New Glouster next week, italizing the blood is absolutely necessary for the cure of general de- bility, weakness, lassatitude, ete. Ford Castle, in Northumberland, England, around which was fought the famous fight of Flodden Field, is advertised to be let, at which ai quarians are grievously shocked. castle is of great antiquity, though nothing certain is known of it until 1287, when it is matter of history that extensive repairs were made. Toward the end of the fourteenth contury it was partially dismantled in a border fray. In 1613 it was captured by James IV, of Scotland. This is the date ot the true romance of Ford Cas- tle. King James found that Lady Heron, wife of the possosor of the cas- tle, had remained behind to guad it against the enemy whilo her husband was a prisoner over the border. The king became infatuated with the Lady Heron eoro he had long possessed the place, and for her sake, it is snid, refrained from destroyivg it. It was this dallying, say tho historians, that cost King James his awtul fate on Flodden Field. Lady Heron, it ap peared afterward, was in constant communication with tho English gen- Yeral, Lord Surrey, who took advan- tage of the delay and rushed on to Flodden. The room occupicd by the king is still preserved in the old por- tion of the edifie If Yon are Ruined in health from any cause, ocspecially from the use of any of the thousand nostrums that prowiise o largely, with long fictitious testimonials, have no fear.
