The Little Depots Should be Eucoweded by s Large Union One, The Rallways Seem More Inclined to Pool for Their Own Benefit Than for the Public Con= vonience. The strangers visiting Council Bluffs and the thousands who pass through the city daily without stopping, get a very poor idea of the place from the firat impression made or the scanty ghmpee gained on the arrival of the train, The local depots, as they are called are miserable little buildings and entirely unworthy of a city of 20, 000 iuhabitants, and the great railway center of this part of the west. They are located too, where there are no pleasant surroundiogs. The first im- pression made is that this must be a country village, and if oue patses on his journey without etopping to eee the city this goes with him, and is given to others by word of mouth. If one stops and socn the sizs and thatt of the place, still it takes much to overcome the unfortu- nate first impression. If one gows throagh to the transfer then he looks arouud in vain tor the city, as thereis iittle therd to indicate what Council Biuffa really 1, and the impression is almost as untortunate though the depot looks somewhat more business like than the local ones, But aside from this there is the matter of convemionce, The local depots are scattered in different parts of the parts of the city, making it be wildering and annoying for trausionts as well us residents. What 18 greatly needed is a large, handsome uuion depot, convenicntly located. The railways seem to have no trouble in pooling when it appears wholly for theic interests, Why can- not they surprige the public by pool- ing once for the e.nvenience and in- torests of the public! This plas been suggested and talked over in tunes past, It onght to be re aud kept talked over unti! the desired ond is sccomplished Tt is under- stood that some of the roads favor a impression it best to urge 1t and work for it, especinlly iu view of their present pecullar relations to the pool lives, They have therofore begun the erec tion of a depot for themselves, which will prove another obstaclo to the building of union depot. The Chicago, Burlington & Qainecy company have purchased land recent- ly near their present property, and it is understood that they will soon put up a brick depot of fair proportions It this plan 18 started on, snother and greater obataclo will ba in the way of # union depot, If anything is to be depot as Lhe city merits, conveniently located, action must ba taken quistly, for the time for securing 1t will be far into the future, T:E BAD ANI] WuRTHLESS Aro never im .:lul or counterfeited, inlly true nd it is positi This 18 espe of a fawily > proof that wedicine the remedy imitated is of the bhighest value. The Fire Lads Oailed Out Twice For Nothing but Once for Bomething. The Blnffs Crty's Running Cart is Einally Reduoced to Ashes. Saturday night was rather an event- ful for the fire lads. In the ovening an alarm was sounded and the depart- ment turned out promptly. Afterhunt- ingabout a while it wus found that the cause of the alarm was some burning straw 1n the rear of Maurer & Craig’s crockery house on Broadway. Som. one had felt in duty bound to set fire to this straw, and some one else had got frightened at the smoke. Not long after quiet had been re- stored another alarm was sounded, this time from box 6, corner of First strect and Again the de- partment turned out, but no fice could be found. Inveatigation showed that some one had maliciously turned n the alarm, and in dolug so had broken the box, or at least some of its work ing parts. These boxes are supposed to be kept locked, but the locks now on the doors are 80 cbeap and simple that almost any littie key will open them. Box 5 was aiso found open. It was suggested by some that the alarm was probably sent in by some of the gang cf burglars who are hovering about the city, and who hojed to have a better chauce to work by getting people to leave their houses to run to a fire, Later in *he night, however, a real blaze did occur, 1t proved to be the old wooden building on Glen avenue, just south of the city building and engine house. The building was owned by Mrs. Platner, and was used by the fice lads asa stable and for the atorege of the Bluff City's running cart. The horse which was in the stable either got loose or was cut looss by whoever fired the building, for it w appa- rently fired. The building itself was burned to the ground, together with the other contente, including the hose cart and three hundred feet of tourna- ment hose. 8160, Bloomer, The Bouna Unlocsed. Chas.
