e — e ien o i LRSS | 2 POLITICAL NUTHS. Oongressman_Jones, of Texas, decided to enter the field as an independent candi- date for governor of the state, and began his canvaes last Saturday. He will ecm- pel the democrats to make & more ener. getic campaign than they have done in ten years past, Emory Speer, representative from the Ninth Georgia congressional district, will be opposed !‘,, a regular democratic candi- date in the present canvass, Mr. Speer feels confident of re-election, however, and e he received two years ago over 4,000 majority sfter a eimilar campaign, his hope seems to be well founded. The republicans and independents in the First congressional district of Florida will probably unite on Mr, D. L, McKinnan as their candidate for congressman, It ix be- lieved that he osn be elected over Con- gressman Davidson, who has been renom. inated by the democrats, The independent spirit is said to be spreading_smong the colored republican voters of Pennsylvania, Several clubs in favor of the Stewart ticket have been formed, one of them in Pittsburg having already 200 membe: Other clubs are forming in different parts of the state. Congressman Singleton's canvass in the Twelfth Illinois district has thrown all the plans of the democrats into confusion, He is supported by the republicans, gre backers and independent democrate, It is thought that he will be re-elected if the present enthusiasm can be maintained. Ex.Governor Thomas L. Young, of the Second Ohio distriet, is inclined to take a desp ndent view of the repntlican pros- pects in his stats, In Hamilton county especially, of which his district is a part, he thinks the result will be disastrous He appears, however, not only willing but eager to get the party's renomination to congress, Proctor Knott will not have a walk over for the democratic nomination for gov- ernor of Kentucky. Colonel Jones has re- ceived wesurances of aid from many leading men in the party, and will make a contest for the honor. 1o was on the democratic electoral ticket in the last presidential campaign and made a canvass of the state, gaining much popularity thereby, & Senator Harris, of Tennessee, thinks that the tariff will be the most important issue the next presidential campaign. The democratic plank on the subject in 1880 waa too vague, he says, Had he written the slause he would have made it read: “‘A tariff for revenue only, and_protection within the stard of revenue.” He belieyes that the democrats will make a square fight on the question in 1884, Tho republicans of Tonnossco huving, by hard work, secured thrce members of con. ress, propose to throw away two of them gy tactional fights, Tn the Second district there is no diminution in the bitterness of the coatest between Corgressman Houk and Mr, Rule, and the indications all poiut to two candidates, In the First dis- | finish the ,apper story of the school trict the situation is not much better, a8 [ houge ,a republican opposition is likely to defeat Mr, Pettibone, The indepenients will have congros. sional candidates in nt least +ix of the dis t Speer in the Ninth and Felton in the nth districts, and probablv one other candidate. With a more* hearty union among the anti-bourb~' elements there would be a reasonr'ie hope of electing Cieneral Gartreld yovernor, #o indifferent are many dem¢ .rats to the success of Mr, Stephens, , The de:nocrats have nominated General John A. Young to run against Speaker Keifer. Mr, Bookwalter received some votes in the convention, but_a telegram ‘was read from him, dated at London, for. bidding the wusing of his name, Sowe of the delegaies, who were no doubt anxious to have a rich candidate, tried to throw doubt on the genuineness of the telegram by insisting that Mr, Bookwalter was in Spain at the date given in the dis- patch, Senater Hoar's friends in Massachusetts will probably aid Mr. Crapo in his candi- dacy for ths governorship, as his defeat on the ground of his action on the river and harbor bill would be a virtual condemna- tion of Mr. Hoar also. Another consid- eration may assist Mr. Crapo. It is be. lieved that if he is nominated General Batler will not make a_campaign, while it Mr. bishop is tha republican candidate a red-hot Butler contest is thought to be cer- tain. The republican losders ars known to be willing to ayoid, if possible, the wear and tear and expense of a Butler fight this ye; Ex-Sej r McDonald sounded the key- note of the Indiana canvass in Indiin- apolis last Monday. He emphatically condemned the prohibitory amendment and declared that the democratic pmity would oppose it in all its stages. The ru.md held by his p.rty on the subjeot, as ho stuted it, is thay “‘each individual com- posing a republic ispossessed of oertain in- alienable rights, among which s the right to acquire and ure private property, and that the personal rights of the citizons are never to be interfered with unless under the clearest demonstration that such inter- ference is essential to the maintenance ot good order, and for the purpose of secur- ing civil liberty.” The prospect of the republi Maine next month has been carefully con- sidered by a correspondent of the Moston Advertiser now traveling in the state. e has not been inclined to take an_over san. guine view of the situation, and has said repeatedly that the fight would be a hard oue, and the result doubtful. In his latest letter, however, ho takes a more hopeful view, and says: ‘“The belief that tho re- publicans are vaining ground is no mere guesswork. All the ussertions of the oppos sition tothe contrary, it is evident that the present Arift is against them. There is no tidal wave, but there is a steady attrac. tion for the uncertain and the doubtful in the increasing coufidence and self-reliance of the iepublicans, Men who wers a fortnight ago hesitating are now ssttled, A young business man in Bangor s.id to me Saturday, ‘We voted for Piaisted two years ago just to have an overturn, but we young men have had enough,” Trouble Saved. Itis a remarkable fact that THoyAs' EcLrernic O1L is as good for internal as external use, For disease of the lungs throat, and for rhenmatiem, beuralgis crick in the back, wounds and sores, it is tho best known remedy, and much 'trou. ble is saved by baving it always on hand, —e SOMIs UOLORADO MINES. Correspondence of the Bee, Dusont, Col,, August 25, —Dumont is situsted on the bank of Ulesr creek, 44 miles west of Denver and eight miles below Georgetown, It has two stamp mills in operation and is the center of bfisiness for several mining companies, Chief among them is the ““Albro,” owned by W, H. Price, ticket agent at the Union depot, Den. ver, The milling ore is stamped here, while the smelting ,ore is shipped to the “Miners’ Smelting Works” at Golden OCity. A lot lately shipped netted $288 per ton. Mr. Drake, the superintendent, is a wide awake gen. tleman, and knows how to manager a mine, The Unadilla company are mining quite extensively; they own the Unadilla house, a large hotel at this place. Mr, J, Duboise, their superintendent, is pushing work on the “Kagle” mine; also the “Eliza- beth” and “Suprise’ mines. The material can also be carried over banks 40 feet high and dumped far away from the canal. To run all the heavy and complicated machinery that will be contained on the boat four or five different engines are required, The cost of excavating is less than 1 cent per cubic yard, and the capac- ity of the dredger is about 15 cubic yards per day. As has been stated before, the machinery for one dredger has already been built, and last week a contract was signed for two more, making three in all. This part of the work will cost $150,000 lhe boats are being built at Port Richmond, on the Delaware river, and the machinery, which is made here, has to be sent overland to that point and there set up. This is nec- esnary, for Colon is on the Atlantic side of the Isthmus, and the boats, which must be towed down, have therefore to be built on the Atlantic coast. Machinery is now being for- ward for one boat, which will be ready to begin operstions in November, When the machinery is on board, the boat will be towed by steamer to Colon, If, in the course of the voy- ago, a storm should arise, she will bo cut adrift to be picked up when the blow is over. A Dredging-Machine Which 18 BEx- pected to Accomplish Wonders, | San Francisco Bulletin, appears from all reports to be pushed forward with all the energy that cir- work already done, and much of the which the whole world has a most live- ly wterest, will be a special cause of Feanciecans, Slaven, his brother, and 1. Huerne, all of this city, some time ago secu the coutract for dredging seven 1ailes netres *of ivod from 000,000. cavation of 6,000,000 cubic material, the amount re: which work will be about brought to the notice of the canal authorities, The machine was in- vented-in this city, and upon securing the contract Mesars. Slaven and Huerne gave an order to the Golden State iron works for building one. That order has now been filled and the wachine is now being delivered, The dredging-machine is not an ex- periment, there being at present one of the same kind, but considerably smaller, in active operation at Union Island, in the Sacramento river, This machine is capable of handling 900 cubic yards per hour, and in four months has dredged a canal 5} miles long, 80 feot wide, and 11 feet deep. Such u machine, but with almost double the capacity, has just been built here for use at Colon, The dredging machinery will be contained in & boat 100 feet long, 50 feet wide and 12 foet deep. The machinery itself is strong and massive, ss well as complicated. The principle upon which the dredger is constructed is that of a series of large buckets at- tached to an endless chain, The chain is composed of links of solid iron about 4 feet long and 8 feet wide, to every alternate one of which a bucket con- taining one and one-half cubic yards is bolted. This line contains 38 buckets, and extends from a tower 50 feet high near the center of the boat down through a large slot running from the bow many feet toward the stern, The line uI buckets, with 1ts endless chain, pastes over a tumbler, or revolving cylinder, at the top of the tower, and over anether beneath and in front of the bow of the boat. This latter tumbler is so supplied with gemnfl,wvnrl_dn! from a derrick, that it can raised or lowered at will, thus making the depth of the cut greater or less. 11 is capable of making a out about 35 foet below the water, In order to out from one side of the canal to the other the boat itself is made to swing on a pivot at the stern, The pivot consists of a large post passing through the boat and driven into the mud be- neath. On this the boat is swung from side to side, and when a new cut is to also being ~pushed fiw‘ on_ the [ b made it is raised, the boat is moved ;':fudiuu" mine by Mr. Kunowles, a large amount of ore is dail wken from the shaft and lower level. There is & large amount of work being done in this camp, but your corres- pondent has been tuo busy to gather forward, and it is again driven into the mud. The earth that is excayated is carried by the buckets to the tower 60 foet above the deck, where it is emptied into o chopper leading to a 86-inch pipe. This pipe extends from judgment in securing a competent | the canal to the requisite depth of 30 leader and working the best county |feet.
