A, 0. Ballard, of Corning, Towa, will preach in the Presbyterian church to- morrow morning and evening, and, by order of the Presbytery, will declare the pulpit vacant. ~The authorities ought not to be too hasty about making private individuals fix up their sfdewalks, so long as the walks about the Bloomer school building are in such a horrible condition, —Justice Frainey had before him yes terday the old man Kountze who claimed to be swindled on circus day. The old man was fined for being drunk, while the fellows arrested for swindling him had es- caped. —Those who have had signa sticking out beyond their buildings on Main street avd Brondway, have been compelled to pull them in. They in turn are now grumbling about the boxes and barrels which are allowed to obstruct the sidewalks. —Arrangements have been made 8o that these of the Grand Army of the Republic who desire to attend the re-union at Grand Tsland, August 28, can do so for 85,15 round trip, The tickets to be good until September 4. ~To.morrow evening Rev, Mr, Lemon 'will deliver at the Baptist church, of which he is pastor, a discourse on “‘Progress of Ihflr concition was that of one who had walked far in the dnet, Her friends were eent for, and on their arrival the necessary sapers were made ot and last evening she was taken to the asylum, ~There have been frequent compl-ints abont kome of the special polliceren, Tt was not long ago that one waa charged with tryine to secrete a men for whom one hunting, The Some who of the regular force was matter was dropped, however. attended the circus Thureday evening com- plain that one special policeman insisted on standing at the edge of the ring, ob structing the f many in the audience. Some yelled for him to st down and two or three of the circus men spoke to him about it, but he stubbornly refused for a half houp or so and then subsided. Men should learn that the authority to wear a star doesn’t make them little gods, ~The Nonpareil has narrowed iteelf JUMPING JUSTICE. Btreet and Robbed. Their Viotim Helpless in the Roadway. Abbott, the well known jus- tice of the peace, was the victim of a bold and successful robbery Thursday night about 11 o’clock. He was re turning to his home on Damon street, and was just about the corner of his own property when he was attacked. The street was dark and there are high banks on each side. Mr. Abbott did down to one argument only, by which it endeavors to force the anti-Anderson re. publicans into his support. It does not pretend any longer to urge voters to sup- port And.rson because of his moral or in- tellectual fitness for the position, It has abandoned all attempts to disprove the werious charges preferred against him by men of his own party, [Its argument now is simply that though he may bea bad man and a weak man, yet he is the republican nominee, and ought to be e'ected, because the next house may be close and the democrats may get a major. ity. The Nonpareil's position now is that if there was no danger of the democrats getting a majority in the next house, it might do to defeat Anderson, but as it is, he must be elected, bad or mot bad. Thinking republicans will not be fri, ht- ened by avy such etuff. The simple ques- tion is whether Anderson is, or is not, a fit man to represent the republicans of this district? Each voter should decide that for himself. If he is a man who can- not be trusted, it would be far safer to elect him when there was an overwhelming re- publican m jority in the house, rather than when there is a close contest. If he is & man morally corrupt, or intellec- tually, or both, he ought not to be elected at all by any jarty, or for any purpose, To force such a candidate on the party by one majority, and then try to crack a party whip over the back of honest voters, is not true republicanism, oot s e C T T T SPOILED THE SPOILS. An Hogineer Saves a Green German From a Co: fidence Game Just in Time, The Strange Indifference of a Pa- ceman Who Was Watching the Affatr, OF late there have been several con- fidenco tricks turned in the yicinity of the Drovers’ hotel, and yosterday there was another one attempted, which fortunately for the victim was interfered with just in time to save him his money. James Burns, who is & most worthy engineer in the em- ploy of the Chicago & Rock Island railway company about noon time noticed that a confidence shark had a German greenhorn in tow. Soon a friend of the confidence man came up and shook hands with him, and was introduced to the German, The three soon sat down on the street ‘Thought in the Church,” it being a review of Henry Ward Beecher’s article in The North American Review for August, All are invited. —Constable Fox, who lost a coat and much strength in’ arresting a crazy soldier who escaped from Fort Omaha, has sent in a bill for damage to clothing, but the officer in command returns it with the chilling information that there isno pro- vision for paying such a claim, ~T. B. Walker was yesterday bofore Justice Fraincy charged with assaulting T. B. Younghusman, his tenant. It ap- pears that a dispute arose about the use of » team, and the most that was claimed by the latter was that Mr. Walker made use of hot words, The caseis to be decided this morning, —Despite the notices of warning some have been hitching horees to trees by Bay- liss' park, and in several instances the horses have gnawed the bark and injured trees greatly. The officers are on-the alert, and are determined to catch some of the offenders, They yesterday gave chase to one man but he escaped, —A large number of the friends of Mr, and Mrs, Taylor gathered at their resi- dence, 706 Mynster street, on Thursday evening, to witness the opening of & night blooming cereus. Many of those present bad never had such an opportunity before, a8 the flower is rare in theso parts, This car track and were talking, Burns strolled over that way and plainly saw the German count out about $100 in tens and fives, and as he was about 1o give over the role of money to the sharpers. Burns asked the green- orn to come over to him. 0 at first declined doing 80, but as the 1equest was re- peated in a very perewmptory tone, he went to Burns, At this time one of the confidence men had a check or re- ceipt written out, ready to turn over for the money, but when they over- heard Burns posting their viciim, they started off at a lively gait Jand struck out for up town, Policeman MoMillan, the special day policoman at the Union Pacific depot, was apparently watching th performance from the window of hi own house near by, but did not make any offer to stop the game or capture the men, It is said that several per- sons asked him afterwards why he did not arrest them, and his reply was, in -ul_uknoe, that there was no good in doing so, as they would not do any- thing witn them up town. It seoms that the several tricks turned lately have been done by about the same parties each timeo, and that their haunt seems to be in the vicinity of the Drover's hotel. With the de- scription given and their runaway known, it seems that the police might arrost them if they so chose to do, At proved o be an unusually fine one, and 1t loast, there is no sceming excuse has been placed in_ spirits to preserve it, if possible, ~—Yestorday afternoon Officer Tyeon ar- rested a wan sleeping off & drunk ina livery stable hay mow, While taking him to the station the fellow skipped up the alley, and on being overtaken by the officer showed fight; %o along and be locked up, proved to be Robert Whiting, and he claims Valisca as his home, ~The commissioners appointed to locate the govenment building were yesterday closing contracts with those whose property they consider likely to be chosen, They will corres, with the department in reference to oonclusion, so that the location will prol bly not be fully determined for a week o) ten days. It is understood that the choice will probably be either Keller's property, corner of Bryant and Broadway; Palmer's before reaching a final where a policeman soes che game go ing on himself, It state of aflair L s . TAKING A TEAM, ' A Btock Man Hunting Aftor the Fellow Who Stole His Horses, A day or two ago two men engaged in trading stock came to this city from Fremont M. Smith and Bam Wilcott. day while Smith was looking after to be his, and that he had hired Wil- property, on Sixth and Broadway, or the | ahead he would give him a half inter- Catholic property. ~Yesterday Officer Tyson met & woman on Pearl streot who stopped him and desired to have him use his suthority to stop the'building that was going on In the city, as there was no one paying for it, Bhe was anxious to have the brickyards closed up as the surest way to stop work, The officer took her te the court house to see about it, and the commissioners’were notified of her evidently deranged sondi- tion, Bhe proved to be Mrs. Tunk, of Haxel Dell township, whose husband is » shoomaker, and formerly lived hore, She #aid she walked in from her home yester-| My residence, No, 716 sy, of the order, and has n day morning, » distance of ten miles, and Bm{:wh'; 0, 16 Fourdh strest | seppost . was finally found at William Harris', about twelve miles south of the clty. Wileott had scld the team to him for $90 and skipped. The horses were uot in condition to travel back, and Mr. Harrls promised to bring them prove his right to the property, S O FOR SALE, L. F, Mugrgy, . county., They gave the names of A. | w: in to-day, and give Bmith a chance to not notice any one on the street, and was not on the alert. The first he knew two men jumped at him from behind, and quickly caught him by the throat, while a third man ad- vanced from in front, and attempted to rifle his pockets, Abbott shouted for help, and at the same time struck out at the fellow in front of him, hit- ting him a stinging blow in the face. The fellow kicked Abbott in the bowe's, knocking the wind out of him, and rendering him almost helpless,. As he sank to the ground Mr. Abbott managed to get one pocketbook out of his pocket and keep it firmly clutched in his hund. One of the gang in the m me removed his nfimr pocket- book, and as Mr. Abbott’s dog came rushing down from the house the three skipped right lively leaving their victim there unable to move and groan- iug with the intense pain cause by the kick he had received. Mrs. Abbott heard the noise as did some of the neighbors and they were soon on the spot, and assisted him into the house, Dr. Seybert was cailed in and found that Mr. Abbott had not been 8o sev- erely injured as to justify any groat alarm as to the final result, though the hurt was a painful one, and caused great bloating and distress, Tuflam- mation was the only thing to be fear- ed. and it was thought this could be avoided by care and quiet, The pocketbook of which he was robbed contained two five dollar bills, one five dollar gold piece, and a two dollar bill - $17 in all. The thieves as they ran away emptied this, and dropped the pocketbook which was found a ehort distance from where the attack was made. The pocket- book which he held grasped in his hand contained change and silver to the amount of s few dollars, The affair was so sudden and so quickly over, and the spot so dark, that Mr. Abtott could gain but a Yery indefinite idea of the looks of his assailants, Tt appears that they must have been in wait for him, and hid upon the top of one of the banks y which he paseed, for they jumped upon him 8o suddenly, that he was not aware of the nearness of any one until he heard a rustle, and almost immediately was throttled. It is ex- vected that he will be able to be out again in a few days. It was rather cool in the highway- men to pick upon such a victim, as the squire is a man who is not ver- dant or timi He was formerly on the police force in Oleveland, has served gallantly in the army, and in fact has had @ variety of thrilling experiences, and it had never entered his head thai he would be held up on the street and robbed. It adds one more tally to his score of adventures, while at the same time it shows clear- ly that Council Bluffs has some bold villians who fear neither the lsw nor it ministers, ‘fapping & Til. Some one slipped into Mr. Jen- ning'’s store on Upper Broadway and tapped the till, getting about $25. Suspicion fell upon Ed. Henry, a eolored boy, who visited the store about the time of the till-tapping. He wanted some lictle article for Mrs. Wallace, and on getting it started on the run for home, Soon after the money was missed. He was arrested and lodged in the calaboose, and when the six other prison escaped he re- fused to go. He denies that he took the money, and explains his suspicious running for home by saying that he loft & game of cards, with another boy, togoon the errand, and was in a harry to_get home and finish the game. Yesterday the case was con. tinued. His bail was fixed at $300, and in defsult he was locked up in jails The London Lancet. Six of the twelve prisoners thus made good their escape. Among them was Frank Phillips and W. Lloyd, who were ar- rested on the charge of having swindled an old man named Kountze out of a revolver and some money. Four others arrested for being drunk or dis orderly or both, made up the six who escaped. Six remained, including Ed Henry, the colored being charged with stealing 825 from Mr, Jenning's store, The escape in this instance seems to have been the result of careless- ness on the part of the officials, rather than the weakness of the calaboose. Still it ceminds the citizens again of the fact that there is no decent or suitable provision for the care of prisoners, It is time that a good jail as woll asa good city building was provided, The erection a combina- tion of these two with a market house also, cannot begin any too soon. The property is already = purchased, the public has already been assured that such an enterprise would soon be begun, and as evorything is ripe, it secms that there ought not to be any delay in meeting the great want.
