THE MOLINE STOVE 5. ADDITIDNAL LO AL NEWS. CONI‘IDENDE CU!!!:!. Undoubted Presence of a Bad OGahg in this Vieinity. The frequent frauds committed on verdaut travelers of late, by means of the bogus check and baggage swindle, have been noted in Tur Bee on the dates of their occurrence, and the ar- rest made Thursday has developed facta that prove that there is a regular organized gang of confidence men plying their nefarious trade between Omaha and the Bluffs, Brunson, the man from De Soto, Towa, who caused the arrest of the venerable old duffer with no real name but many aliasses, was very desirous at the off set that the prisoner should receive the extrome penalty of the law. In fact, he said that he would spend one hundred dol- lars to have the matter properly pros- ecuted to the bitter end. It seems, however, that hir ardor dampened Thursday afternoon, for he settled up his claims on the guilty party on the receipt of fifty dollars, more than he lost in the first place. His story is that when he came out of the police court a stzanger approached him and introduced the question of settlement, inasmuch as the prisoner was such an old man, y Brunson told the stranger that his terms were $60 and not a cent less. He was told to wait an hour. This he did and in the meantime two other parties approached him and broached the same question, both of them en- deavoring to have the amount of set- Manufactured by MOLINE STOVE COMPANY. Finding Brunson was firm an appointment was made for three o'clock at a large store on Farnam street, the proprietors of which knew nothing of Brunson, the other parties or the business of either, Promptly at three o’clock an- other individual, not any of those Brunson had previously seen with him, and paid over the sum of fitty dollars in settlement of his claim, This goes to show that the confidence man arrested Thursday has many co- laboring friends in this city. Very fortunately, before he was let go on the Brunson charge yesterday, a young German called on the police authorities and immediately identified the prisoner as a man who beat him out of fifty dollars at Lincoln last week. The affair happening in Lan- caster county, the case will have to be tried there, but the confidence man is atill held here awaiting further devel- opements. To show how sharp the old feilow is it will be remembered that he ap- parently, by mistake only, took thirty- four dollars fromn Brunson, when ke had asked for thirty-six, thus by one dollar destroying the penitentiary penalty, in case of conviction. Every effort possible should be made by the police, and indeed private citi- zens, to break up this confidence gang. The following comrades compose the com- mittee of arrangements, which is suf- ficient ensure the success of the day's festivities: Judge Llp&lncutt Harry Erdman, 8, Stover, C. Fitch and M. J. It is expected that eighteen or twenty new members will then be mustered in., On the fivat duy of the grand reunion Custer post will have its headquarters established on the camp grounds at Grand Island, where comfortable acommodations will be arranged for all the members and their familics, This is a matter of in- terest to all old eoldicrs and should be carefully remembered. The various floating rumors con- cerning an alliance between the Union Pacific and the Milwaukee & Omaha line would seem to gather additional weight from the following special dis- patch to The Chicago Tribune, dated at Denver, Aug. 9th: “‘An open rupture between the pooled Colorado railroads is generally anticipated here. The fact that all overtures for a settlement of the pool difficuities and the entrance of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy have ended in smoke is regarded as being ominous. 1t seems that the principal causo for conflict between the Unton Pacific aud Burlington ts the demand of the former that the latter mako a pledge to construct no more railroads in Oolorado. This the Burlington peo- ple have pointedly refused to do and in defiance of the proposition they have recently let the contract for the construction’ of a thirty-five-mile branch from Bush City to Greeley. This step is a vory important one, as it indicates to those best acquainted with the railroad situation in the state that the Burlington is being pushed to the continental divide to assume command of a pass to tho Pacific, Tt = [ iis looked upou as a fixed fact here that the Burlington line will soon b on to the Pacific coast, and the Union Pacific diroctory are very much exer- cised over the matter, and will proba- bly make pool concessions sooner thn retain an attitude that will force the Burlington into extreme measures. The probability of a freight war has beon agitated ro long and the aspect has been so threatening that the wholesale merchants have allowed their warchouse stocks to become ex- bausted, The result of this pool trou- ble is that the business of the state has been materially affected, and in many instances curtailed.” ENO'S HOTEL, E.
