The park fences are not intended for roost- ing places to be used by such foul fowls as some of these show themselves to be, There has been 8o much of this loafing and lounging along the fence, especially on Pearl street, that many Indies take to the are mnot e 4‘7 SEEN AT LONG RANGE. Another Glance at the Political Situ- ation in this Congressional District, Newspaper organs of the grand old party in the Council Bluffs, Towa, dis trict have discovered that the charges avainst the gallant Major Anderson candidate for congress, cannot be ig nored, He is that patriot who is said t« have signed a bond previous to the sting of the convention in which va8 nomins himself tc secure a postoffice for n certain man whose support he desired, or, failing in that, to pay him in lawful money the sum of 81,000, At the time the convention was in session thisdubious transaction was fully exposed, but it suited the supporters of the major to ignore the matter. Now, however, after six or eight weeks, a dissatisfac tion with the candidate is showing itself among a few of the more intel ligent citizens of the district, and the d binding other side of the street, rather than run the disgraceful gauntlet, ~The Driving Park association is im- proving the grounds greatly, as & prepara- tion for the meeting and fair to be held Beptember 18 to 22, One bill of §650 was yesterday paid just for the freight on lum. —The latest wedding permit is for Law- rence JJ. Price three thousand dollars, Enquire at Bre office, —The new freight house of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul road is about com- pleted, and is spacious and conyenient, The building of the new passenger depot will follow right along. —The sad news reashed here yesterday of the death of Frank Newell, #on of R, O, Newell, of Bed Oak, who formerly resided here. His many friends here will sympa- thize deeply with him in his bereavement. —An old lady living alons on the bot- tom is reported as having an experience with a burglar or prowler Sunday night, and to have welled the intruder over the head with a club, causing him to scamper away lively, —Yesterday a mildly insane woman ‘was brought to the jail here from Wash- ington township, her name was LauraJ. Flesher. Sho,was very musically inclined and kept singing while she was not yelling, ber used in building improvements, A large hall is being erected, of cross shape, ench section being 40 by 150 feet, and where they cross is to arise a tower 85 feet in height, A half mile track has been made inxide of the mile track, a feature which no other grounds in this part of the country has, and one which wiil be greatly appreciated, as it can be used to jog over between heats and other odd times, Four hundred stalls are to be built, and other improvements mede, which shows enter. prise and a dastermination to have every convenience and attraction, —One poor dealer in Japanese spiders was yesterday trying to dispose of a fow of the toys on the street, at a nickle a piece. He was at onco interviewed by an officer, who finding he had no license took him before the superior court, While wait- ing for a hearing he sold the judge one, the clerk one, the poll-tax collector one, the city marshal one, and so dispo-ed of the most of his stock, and then quietly skipped out and away, while the attend. ants upon court were otherwise engaged, Every drunk who now couies in contact with the officials may now expect to sce spiders dance befoze his eyes until he is #o frightened by the prospect of the jim-jams that he will gladly swear off, and every fellow who is behind on hiu) poll-tax will probably be frightened into prompter judgment by the way Dave Mattaz will dance these horrible things before him, B ch official doubtless has some object in view in thus invosting, and the poor ped- dler has shown himself a good salesman and shrewd enough to know when to leave a court room, A Sl History in Brief. It spite of threats, spying flankies, paid bamboozles, ofc., our business uatil the ears of the court house attaches wero almost worn out. She was last even- ing taken to'the asylum whereshe has been once before under treatment. —The thoughtlessness and selfishness of men is shown often at the postoffice by those who stand leaning against the boxes, leicurely reading their latters or waiting for more mail, and completely obstructing the vision of others who wait to peep into their own boxes. If men must lean, while waiting in the postoffice, they should take to the wall on the other side. —There was quite a scene in Harle, Mc- Kune & Co.’s drug store yesterday, by an incipient blaze caused by one of the clerk’s carcless use Oof a lantern. The flames caught some clothing hanging beside the elevator, and blazed up brightly until the clerks suppressed it by forming & bucket brigade. The loss was only nominal, but for & few minutes a bad conflugration was threatened. —August Dietze, arrested for entering T. A, Walkec's house, is still confined at the juil, the question of his sanity not having been satisfactorily determined, though there is & seeming preponderance of evidence that he is really insane and not shamming it. He is evidently suffer- ing from fever, but the report that he is sufferivg from loathsom disenses is without foundation, —W. ¥. Dodge, who has served as yard- master of the Cbicago, Rock Island & Pacific railrosd for twelve years, yester- day severed his connection with that com- pany to accept a higher position with the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad. His employes presented him on leaving the road with an elegant watoh-case, a to- ken of the highest appreciation in which he was held by all. The O, M, & St. P. road has surely gained a trusty and effi- cient man, A Carp.—T have for sale or trade cheap, one B-room house, #3,000; one 2room house, $250; one Groom house, $1,800; two store rooms, 85,000; 200 acres of land; 19 acres of land, 1improved, at the head of Broadway in the city, $2,600; a lot on Main street, $750; 100 cheap lots; beauti- ful residence lots, 810 each, nothing down and 83 per month; 40 acres improved, in two miles of the city, £30 per acre; 100, partly improved, choice land within nine miles of B, & M, R. Ex-Mayor Vavouay, Council Bluffs, Towa, —Anyone stepping into Justice Frain- ©y's court yesterday would have imagined & democratio caucus was in scssion, but it was ouly thesettling of a little difference between J. C, Morgan and W, &, Vaughan, The former was suing the latter for & sub. seription bill to his Evening Glimmer, while the latter set up in defense that he supposed the patent medicine sheet was sent him complimentary, though he couldu’t see how it was any compliment to receive it, He further set up that he had expended about $140 in electioneering for Morgan when the latter can for the legis- lature. Vaughan threw off an even hun- dred, however, and only made the counter claim $40, that being for teams supplied on Morgau's order and in his interest to carry voters to the First ward polls, George Holmes Esq,, appeared as Mor- gan's attorney, and William Mynster as Vaughan's, and with & dewocratic police, and several democratic witnesses and history in Council Bluffs is satisfac- tory to ue, and by attending strictly to ourown business we hope to add to the volume of our trade year by year as we have done. The adoption of the prohibition amendment to the state coustitution will have a very damaging effect on the republican candidates for con- gress in some of the districts, and this makes it a matter of great importance that the faithful shall not be permitted to be turned away from their nomi- nees in obedience to the mouthin. s of men why believe that the buying and selling of offices should bo a penitenti- ary offense, Major Anderson is there- fore receiving the unbounded sympa- thy and the heartiest support of every truly loyal organ in Iowa. More than this, he is defended by mauy of them in his bond transaction and he is made glad by the appearance of frequent paragraphas in the organs to the effect that the real facts as to the bond will not bo made public by the major until the solid south hns again been crushed, aud the red- shirted and red-handed oppressors of the Senegambian subdued for another period of two years. When all this shall have been done Major Anderson proposos to tell all about it. Thss is not fancy, but fact. It represents faithfully the attitude of the republi- can party in the Council Bluffs dis- trict towards its candidate. A man charged on credible evidenc: with gross corruption and bribery finds his present defense in an idiotic protense that the country is in danger, and that when it shall have been saved he will find time for explanation, Unfor- tunately this device has been success ful many times of late years, and this fact more than anything else proves the besotted ignorance and bigotry of political majorities in America.— Chi cago Times, The Times, with its usual Ismaelitic policy, slaps right and left without waiting to get at the full facts, The republican party of this district is de- serving of sympathy rather than of criticism, in having forced upon it by one special clique a candidate over whom hangs such serious charges of corruption, whose nomination was secured by such unsavory methods, and who even then got. it by only one majority. The organs, which are try- ing to smother the charges, do not truly represent the republican party of this district. The real republicans favor the fullest and freest investiga- tion of Anderson's character and record, and insist on having some more satisfying explanations than those thus offered. True republicaus in this distriot do not want the glorious party record besmirched and befouled by attempts to bolster up candidates who dishonor it. It is only the bosses and the clique who are thus willing to sacrifice party honor for personal am- bition, and they are the ones who should be slapped by The Times instead of the party as a whole, Ml AT POLICE PICKINGS. How the Blue Coats Have been Busy- ing Themselves, There was a lively kind of a rcw Sunday, in which Mike Whalen and Pat Murray took a clatter. Murray says that Whalen didn’t play fair, and hit him over the head with a bar of iron, Whalen will have a chance to explain the whalin’ to Judge Ayles- worth, Among the drunks booked was one named Crowley, arrested by officer Edgar. One wan has been found who was able to - | mind COUCIL BLUFFS, IOWA TUESDAY, AT UST 8 168 come up with him, and the entire fra- ternity of Sacramento jokers will unite to-day to present the chap witha medal for his achievement, He came up with him on the road nine miles north of Aunburn, Reynolds was ¢ down on a buckboard on which he had strapped fast a leathern valise containing thirty six ouncea in gold dust, the partial pro- duct of & claim he had an interest in. 1n his pockets he had gold and silver coin amounting to 850. 1t was hot and dusty, the horse was slow, the motion of the buckboard soothing in its mon.tony, and Reynolds went fast asleep. He was awakened by the sudden stopping of his vehicle, and the cold pressure of tho muzzle of a double barreled shotgun just under his nose. At the other end of the gun was a man - masked ‘‘Throw up your handa!” cried the highway- man, Thomas elevated his palms out- ward, ‘‘Ante,” was the next order. It was the kind of English Reynolds underatood, but he had presence of enough to remark that he conldn’t ante with both hands pawing the air, ‘‘Well, come down dut o’ that.” Thomas came down, Then began a colloquy. “Lwok here, mister,” said Reynolds; youl”! ir, not I,” replied this Dick Tarpi “I was brought up right, aud wouldn’t hurt a preacher man,” ‘Al right,” said Reynold; ‘‘then 1 can go.” And he started. “‘Hold on, friend; if ycu're a preacher, prove it. Gut right down here and pray.” It is related that Reynolds turned pale, and, likewise, that it is the only inatance of any such change ever hay- ing occurred in his cheeks, He hadn’t kuelt since he was in short clothes; but then, 8560 and thirty-six ounces were powerful incentives to be good for once in his life, and down he went, but ao awkwardly that he toppled over in the dust. The road agent poked him upright with the butt of his gun, “Now say the Lord’s prayer.” Had he been commended to recito a summons in a replevin suit he would not have hesitated. “Come, hurry up, You're a long time unlinking your tongne.” Ihen Thomas began: ‘“Won't a prager of my own do?” ““No, siree. I want you to repeat tho one I know.” Thomas then stammeringly began: “From Greenland’s icy mountains, When I can read my title clear.” “Hold on; that wou't do—"" “Mary had a little Jam’ Where Afiic's sunny fountains Roll down their golden stran’, “That'll do. How much of that golden stran’ have you got about you?” Reyuold produced ten American dollars; the agent called for more; a quarter eagle, and the fellow took aim at Tom'’s second diamond shirt stud. Reynolds fished a double eagle out of his right vest pocket; the robber put his finger on the trigger, and then doubting Thomas produced his watch, turned his pockets, and throwing down all he had cried out: “Forever and ever, amen—Ilet me got up out of this: ‘‘By gracious, you do know it; get up. I guess I've dome you some good anyhow, and as you seem to be sort o' rusty in your prayers, I'll take this for my sarvices. Get up on that buckboard, and drive om, right quick!” Reynolds didn'c wait a second or- der, but as he picked up the reins he couldn’t resist the temptation to have the last word. *‘Say, you've got 850 out of me; now I'll bet you all there isin that valise against the fifty that I can name the next governor.” “I don’t want your dirty clothes; keep your old valise.” “You're a smart road agent, you aro; here's thirty-six ounces in gold 1n that valize,” “Liook here, Tom Reynolds; maybe you think I don’t know you; but I do, and T wonldn't believe you if you said that leather bag was lilled with dia- wonds. You jest go on and quit your jokin”.” Reynolds, amazed that his fame had penetrated the Sierras, drove off, sad- dened by the thought that even the rebbers in the hills wouldn't believe that he could be seri Horsford's Aocid Phosphato ns a Cooling Drink.
