These oysters are brought into being care fully nurtured and cared for, and there in tanks, looking as happy this warm weather as if they were not being | raised only to bo boiled and eaten Prof. Rice, who, in popular parlance, “has the oyster down fine,” is thore experimenting under the patro of Mr, G. Blackford. Mr, B wd predicts the ultimate ination of the oyster that intelligent animal can be propagated and reared artifically, and Lo hopes, he says, bringing them into the world scienufically, to be able to produce them in such large numbers and at so little cost that oyster stews will be sold for five cents. There is no trouble about propagating oysters ex tribe, unles ~this has often been don easy enough, It is the baby t make the ditliculty. The around in the tanks as lively as possible till they are five or six days old. Then they die. No- body has ever yet been able to propa gate oysters artificially and rear them to mature oysterhood, Nobody has even kept them alive for a month, ex cept by ecattering the spawn in un confined salt water, whichis so ncar the natural process that it can hardly bo called artificial. What Prof. R is trying to find out for Mr, B! ford is how the young oysters may be raised and kept alive and healthy “un til they are big enough to eat, When a Times reporter climbod the winding stairs leading to this tower yesterday he found Prof. Rice earn- estly watching the movements of a frlsky yourg oyster that was swim- ming about in its tank. The tank was very diminutive, buing nnwhiwg more or less than u deop of water. The oyster had not yet reached that ied condition in which he might be seen with the naked eye, but had to be looked at through a mivrn:.w;m With the machine arranged to magnify to about forty dimmcters the oyster looked ahout the size of a flea, ate toss *‘How large is he in reality?’ the reporter asked. “Ho is growing nicely,” Prof. Rice replied, “Heis only a day old, but he is already almost as large as the point of a needle. Ho was swim- wing round and round, huving a sort of go-as-you-please match by himself, and about him were swimming dozens of other monsters, so; of them of remarkeble sppearance. Al this within the liwited space of one drop of water. The younyg oyster was th leviathan of the . The other creatures were bardly a tenth of his Mr., ckford “Here is an _oyster has just brought up,” said the pro- fessor. A fine, healthy specimen of a male oystor, abont three years old, 1 should judzi—from that to five., They sometime: od eize in th first summe r existence, I the following sprivg they are hardly any larger, T will dissect this fellow t0 show you what an elaborate sort of animal an oyster is. Do you see his heart beat.” Sure enough, just behind that hard part we sometines call the eyo was the little rascal’s heart. It was a small grayish sack about the size of n large pea, and it was beating away furiously, about twenty pulsations a minute. This was a very slow pulse under the circumstances, considering that he had just been wrenched out of his shell and at that misute had the ors pokec Doint of a pair of his throat. “Here e his gilla,” the profeasor , vaiging with 2 tiny pair of the thin rows of fringe run- down ono 8 “Under this I r of tiny hairs, opens oll and the water s in, carrying in wich it the small hairs, bet eseape. uuht iv th ud cannot by u muscnlar mouth, Her mouth, and you sco it is large ¢ to swallow a good morsel of fooc The mouth was at the end of the soft pulpy phiz, and was large enongh wo awallow u fly, The professor then, with the point of his seiss rs, opened the oyster’s stomucn, 1 tho middle of the soft. part, thence traced the intestines, wl run the oysters en- tire length, turning back m their course and running along his inner side. s that his eye!” the reporter ask- ed, pointing to lhu large hard part. "uh, no; that is muscle,” said the professor, laughing. “That is the muscle with which he holds his two shells together. Tt is very powerful, consid its size. He'has no eyes, and blind, of course, He has ther, and can only hear in a ral way, or thoough seusation, at is, if you lay him on a board and strike ihie board a emart rap, he ev- idently knows it.” All this time the Professor was dis secting the oyster, laying bare his mouth, which 18 covered with fliws, and exposing the interior of his stom: ach, his intestincs and all of his mus- cles. The wretch’s little heart kept beating o hard, the reporter was in- clined to think he was suffering, and inquired whether he had any sensa- tion, “Very little, if any,” Prof. Rice re- plicd, slicing off another picce with the tiny shears, ‘I do not think that 21l fish has much mnunliuu ter this dissection his hes will continue to beat, perhaps tor twu or threo hours, 1 have hopes of he- ing able to raiss the young oysters, but am rather doubtful ebout it, We could multtply them very rapidily if we could unl) raiso them,” While he was talking the professor was skinning the oyster very much as a man skins 2 rabbit. The flimay skin ed off casily, 1 > edi- ooking tlesh, “People don’t stop to think when they are eating oystors that they are swallowing hearts, mw..u- etulna throats aud intestines, But they a A neat-looking bird, isn't he?” bl No Matter What Happons r..u may assured that you are safe in heing speedily cured by THoyAs' Fow T.1¢ O1L, in all cases of rheumatism, neu. ralgia, toothache, ete.
