Pri ilw POSTOFFICE ROBBERS, Who Were Promptly Canght With the Plunder in Their Possession. Jorrespondence of The Bee. West Sink, Towa, July 28— Last night about midnight some parties broke open the hardware store and postoflico of H. B. Allen, at Walled Lake, and carried away valuables, in- cluding stamps, letters, small amount of money, and number They forced the door open by prying with chisels and bars, which they left when they retired. Deputy Constable Geo. Burgan ani Lewis Stella, his assistant, arrived here this forenoon with a team, and assisted by Deputy Sheriff McCUracken and Marshal A. Schuyler, of this place, made a successful ‘‘still hunt” of the town, culminating in the ar- rest of two hard looking young men, a3 they were aboul to take ““foot pas- sage” westward on the track., They arted the foot race while they pulled out their revolvers, of which they had a good supply, but they concluded not to use them when they discovered the sharp officers had the drop on them, registored of revolvers. and began throwing the stlver- plated pistols into the grass. Both were caught after a few minutes search among the freight cars and tall grass and weods, and ironed together they were loaded into a wagen and started on a return to Walled Lake. They had quite a *'kit” of burglar tools, such as drills, punches, fuse, several stolen revolvers, money and postage stamps, The officers of Wall- ed Lake are spoken of in terms of praise for their great promptness and efficient action, and they feelconfident they has e the evidence to convict, | yond a doubt, and the general impres- sion was expressed that these partics are hardened in crime, Among other things one of them offered to tell where he threw a revolver if the constable would give him a dollar. The money was promptly given him and they found the death messenger as he told them Buokeye, A Friend in Noed. Sold by C. F. Goodman Fortunes American Hero Worship Chicago . imes, The story ran along one of the Ponnsylvania lines of railroad that the illustrous son of Boston, Mr, - livan, whoso fame has suffered some slight eclipso owing to his failure to carry out a contract relative to the suppression of the gentloman from England known in the sporting world as Tug Wilson, was cn board ono of the trains, If the announcement had boen that Arabi Pasha was passing that way with Admiral Seymour in hot pursuit, it could not have created uiore popular interest. At overy sta- tion the plattorms wero crowded with throngs of people, many of whom had abandoned their work to catch a glimpse of tho victor of Paddy Ryan, There was everywhere a loud demand that the hero step forward to receive his merited plau dits, The conductor of the train, advised of the cxettement along the line and desirous of doing what lay in his power to gratify the grateful curiosity of his countrymen and reflect honor upon his train, in- duced the drummer of a Now York shirt house to personate Mr. Sullivap. He appeared upon the platform of the car and bowed like a Chesterfield while the brawny admirers of the ex- ponents of the manly art cheered him without stint. This farce was kept up all along the line. Tf this particular drummer had as much muscle as drum- mers are generally supposed tohave of cheek, he would have passed readily enough for the “best” man in Ameri- ca. If a great philanthropist had been upon the train, some renowned human itarian, some great professor of the of the healing art, some prescher of the word, would the workers of these shops have thrown down their tools to run out and cheer him on his way! HoldIng by the Gown a bomnambulist Who was Suspended from an Upper Story Window, Atlanta Constitution, Last night a lady who resides onlvy St. was “at home” to quite a number of her friends, and a pleasant evening was the result. Before the hour for separation had arrived, however, one of the guests of the lady was taken qui e ill and escorted to s bed room where she was disrobed and made feel as easy as cvery possible kindness could cffer, About 12 o'clock she fell into a quiet sleep, and the young lady who was watching by her side, think ing that her guest had forgotten her Wlls in sweet slumber, lay down upon a sofa beside a window in the room, and was soon lost to the ca.esof the world, How long she slept she does not know, but while in the midst of a plesant dreamshe folt something brush across her face, and with a start, awoke, Her awaking saved the life of her friend, but came near causing her own death, The something which brushed across her face and awoke her was the night dress of that friend, who had, in a somnambulistic fit, arisen from her bed and walked across the room to the window besides which the lady was . sleeping. To got to the window she crawled over the sleeping torm of her host, and then began an exit which must have resulted in death but for the work of her gown, Hardly realiz- inz what she was doing, the lady grab- bed the white fabric which had aroused her with both hands, and as she did so her ears were gr d with screams just outside the window. In an in- stant ghe realizad that she was hold- ing her friend in mid-air, and that to loosen her grasp on the cloth was to issure her death, She was not physi- cally stroog, but with a nerve rarely equalled she tightened her hold and then joined in with hor friend’s call for aid, Boon their combined screams awoke the inmates of the house, who hastened to the room and rescued the young lady from her wrial pesition, As 80( n as the somnambulist, for such she acknowledged herself to be, was drawn into the room, the young lady who 8 ved her life fainted, and this morning her nervous prostration is so | | | | | nt | [ | | | 185%, great that her friendsare in great anx- ioty for her, Skinny Men. “Wells' Health Renewer” restores health and vigor, cares Dyspopsia, Impotence, Sexual Debility Dairy Farming. &1 | 1f Americans aro the most extrava- | gant moat-eate s in the world it 18 be | cause they have more of | quality po var v n cattle, to eat than any other tera prairies aboun our western farms with sheop and pigs, and our farests have beon well sup with game; and theso sources of supply have given us not only an ndance ¢ l«h.m]v flesh, but a greater variety to choose from than s to be 1 elsowhere, except some of the wt British provinces. But it 18 secoming evident that meat will not alwa bundant and cheap, The sharp warning conveyud in the rise in prices last pring cannot be safely over. d. That sudden and unlooked for advance was caused by tho e rish- | of eattle in Colorado and Montana {1, and the starving that followed the drought of last summor—and these causes may bo encountercd again, Bosides, the western states are sottling up rapidly, and farms and fon taking up Iands that s freo cattlo ing are ved ns ranges. Cotton and grain farms are pushing tho feeding ground i Toxas turther and further west evory yoar; and the pluins and valleys of Colorado and Montana are boing gradually con- verted into farms, from which all cat- tle, excopt such as belong to tho land- owners, aro cxoluded. Ten from now six or seven million souls will have baen added to our population, and this will materially cireumscribe the arcas now occupied as freo feed- ing grounds tor eattle. A short grain or potato crop may be made good in a singlo year, but the destruction made in cattly herds by a severe winter or a calamitous drought, which causes ani mals to perish for want of forage and water, cannot be repaived for sev- oral yoars, With a succession of fa- vorable seasons, permitting tho fore ing of young animals by liberal foed- ing, tho present scarcity may be over- come, and the price of meat brought down to a point within the reach of laboring men, But it is possible that the day of cheap meat in tho country is ended; that beeof and mutton will beexalted mnto a luxury, and that familiea f limitod means will need to provide themselves with such substi- tutes as can ba obtained. In the old countries choese is the favorite substi- tute for meat, and it is largely used in Fuogland, Scotland and France. Our people have not treated this estimable articlo of food with the respect it is entitled to, and a very large propor- tion of the cheese made inthe country figures chicfly in our export tables; goes abroad to by eaten by Europeans, who moro a ely appreciate it. An American laborer would regard a mcal of bread and cheese as poor fare, and even the fas in higher circles which prescribes a bit of cheeso after dinner as an agent of digestion is re- luctantly observed. In Europe the article is considered tho basis of a good meal in families of limited meaue, and a dioner of bread and choese, with some cheap beverago as an accompaniment, is nevor deapiscd. Cheese eating will cortainly increase with the scarcity of meat, and this will causo choese-making o hecome an impoctant feature in western agri- culture, The creamery aystem inau- gurated in Towa and Northern Tlli- nois gives the key to the most econom- ical and satisfactory method of con- verting milk into both butter and checse, and as the demand for theso articles must grow with the increasing scarcity of meat, datry farming cannot but continue a profitablo—the most profitable—form of agriculture in the west, Nearly a Micaclo. .
