Spirited Scenes in the National Stock Yards at St. Louis, How the Dealers Ars Ocoasionally Hunted by Their Horned Property- The Dexterity Displayed by Cow- bovs, Globe-Democrat, The “western wilds” are an unfail- ing source of Interest to the pecple of the cities east of the frontier, and many & journey is made to the far west solely for the purposo of seeing the untamed herds of ca.tle and but- falo that have never known any greater restrainst than a good stift prairio breeze. There is an indisori- bable abandon and fierceness about the undomesticated western bovine that is never wholly lost. Louis afford sufficient opportuni- ties to gratify the most exacting curi- osity. Daily, almost, occur scenes fraught with excitement and interest attending the handling of herds direc from the prairies. One day last week a brindle stag, weighed separately from the herd, on leaving the scales suddenly attacked the counting clerk, and pursued him to the barrier a fow ards distant, The clerk fled like a eor, and at_one bound scaled the high fence, He was not an instant to quick, for THE STAG'S LONG HORN caught the leg of his pants and ripped it into shreds. A faithful shopherd dog belonging to the clerk, followed his master to the fence, and the en- raged steer turned upon him thus diverting its attention from the terror- stricken man, The dog easily escaped the fierce cnslaughts of the steer. A gang of boys, armed with sharp point- ed sticks, soon drove it back to a pen. Not long eince, a herder was knocked down by a wild steer and his face disfigured for life, His nose was torn completely from his face, That he was not killed was owing to the fact that the l(mfi horns, wide apart, touched the groun on each side of the poor fellow’s head as he lay prostrate. On Friday last a slendid specimen of the Texas ‘‘long horn,” straying from a herd, dashed through the alleys of the yards bellow- ing and plunging furiously, causing drivers, dealers, employes, and even dogs to give it a wide berth. The brute leaped the picket fence around the exchange building into the aroa, and IN A TWINKLING nearly & hundred men engaged in trading, forgot their business and fled for safety. The ‘‘long horn” was finally dyrivon toward a herd, and once among its fellows, became quiet, evidently satisfied with its playful rampage. The excitement and inter- est to an observer is mnot confined to the cattle, Texas horses, too, cc: casionally furnish lively episodes, In the same manner as cattle, they are driven into cars directly from the ranges, and are turned into pens, their wild spirit un- broken. The shippers send Mexicans who are experts in handling the lasso and skilled in taming these steeds of the ranges with their herds. The horses are turned into a large pen, which the seller and customer also en- ter. The latter chooses the animal he desires to purchase, and when the selection is made the Mexican begins his task, He approaches the drove and stampedes it. As the affrighted horses dash past him he throws the lasgo in the air, WITH WONDERFUL ACCURACY, and it slips over the head of the ani- mal wanted. Then the excitement be- gins The noose encircles the horse's Men from Denven have taken the place of the strikers on the D), & R, G. extension and work has been resumed on the exten- sion to Utah, The pavilion for the exhibition of Hins- dale county ores at the exposition will be ornamented with 150 photographic views of different portions of the county. Greatly to its surprise the captured steed is brought back with a sudden jerk, that nerrly throws it off its feet. The wild nature of the beast is now faurl aroused, and, finding escape impos ble, it will attack its captor. Rearing upon its hind legs, it will throw its fore feet forward and attempt to bring them downfupon its tamer with crush- ing force. The latter, active and agile, easily dodges the frantic animal, and bg dexterous manipulation of the rope obliges it to move about as he desires, The horse is then taken to the buyer's stable, The Mexican fastens the rope 10 the tail of a stout horse, especially trained for the purpose and MOUNTING THE SUBMISSIVE ANIMAL rides away, the captured one being dragged behind.
