A, R. Anderson to the head of its editorial columns as & candidate for congress, It has been a long time coming to this. Maj. Anderson was in the city day beforo yesterday, and the following morning the flag was at last run up. Itis & little strange, however, that the title of *“colonel” is not given his name as it ap pears at the head of the column in which be has of late been so froquently promoted from major to colonel, by all means, ~The Garryowens object to the way their last Sunday’s game of base ball was reported in some of the papers, by which it was made out that thelr defeat was iguo- minious, when the facts are that they did not have their regular nine, four or five of their best players being abeent, and their places filled by substitutes, heir oppo- neuts, the Swawp Angels, had nearly all their regular nine, and a few of the best players out of the Chumps. Among the witness s who were in attendance were several from Avoca, The story of the defense seems to be that Volner was in Kampf’s employ, and had been on a protracted spree, and that he picked up a row himself, in which he received some kicks and thumps, but that he was the aggren- sive party, and altogether to blame. It i claimed further that his injuries are not 8o severo as he has represent- ed. Only a few of the witnesses were examined yesterday, there bemng others yet to bring in, TOWAS ITEMS. An editorial which appeared in yes- terday's Nonpareil, has caused many indignation among particularly, and The Nonpareil be- the amendment was strongly allied with the anti-pro hibitionists, and its editorials were all of that tinge. Now that the amend- ment has carried it has taken one of its usual flippity-flope, “New you see it, and now you don’t,” and in this editorial tries to got on the other si'e of the fonce so as to be with the ma- jority. This is disgusting to members even of the majority. After a buttle it is a poor timo for o defeated one to come in and hurrah with the victors, This is not the only cause of indigna- tion, however, The Nonpareil in substanco eays to the Germans that the ropublican party can got along without them, and that if they don’t like the way certain re- publicans have voted on this question they can go. It speaks flippantly of them and attacks the German press savagely as pursuing a disreputable ooune, lpenking Wwell of only beer and free lunches. 1t is not merely poor policy to thus scorn the Germans, but it 18 unjust, The Germans are not to be ignored or told to go if they feel like it, as though no one cared. They aro entitled to arguments pro and con, to a full and respoctful hearing, and when presented with facts are as well capable of passing judsment upon them as those who so disdainfully speak of foreigners as a peculiar race of animals whoso presence has to be endured but 18 not relished. There are others besides Gormans who teel the sting of such an editorial, claiming to be republican, To vir- tually tell all foreigners that the re- Eublicnn party is not one for them, ut that they naturally belong in the democratic camp and’ ought to stay there, is particnlarly offensive when in the same columns democrats are so frequently pictured as being the only ones guilty of all the crimes in the catalogue. Fortunately, however, this utterance against Germans and other foreigners is not authoritative as the sentiment of the republican oxpressions of German circles circles in general. fore the election on the railroad track near Burlington, and was run over by u freight, receiv- ing injuries from which he cannot poesibly recover. The following from The Washington Press of this state, is being reproduced in other papers, as showing how the ocontest in the Ninth district is viewed from afar: “‘At this distance it appears that Major A. R. Auderson ought to take himself off the republican congres- sional ticket in the Ninth district. He got the nomination by only one majority, To secure the vote,a delegate in the convention, Hon, C. R. Scots, charged that Major A. gave his bond (it is published) for $1,000 to secure the appointment of 8. 0. McKittick as postmaster in Randolph, Fremont county, within 60 days. It looks likes a bargain and sale, and if the charge be true it ought to send the major to grass, Further Tho Marshall Times quotes the report that Major A. also x}mkemd with his railroad commis- sionership to Hon. John Y. Stone, who is to be appointed in A.’s stead, Stone being a congressional rival. We hope these stories may turn out to be campaign lies, but if they be true, the republicans of the Ninth district have but one duty to perform, and that is to make a new ticket. We don’t want any ‘Kansas politics in Towa.” Sl T Chinese Stock Farming. An interesting account of the estab- lishment of a stock farm by the vice- roy of the province of Chihle, in China, has been given by the Ameri- v | ground. can consul general at Shanghai. In one of his previous reports he had pointed out that the Mongolian herds could be greatly increased in value by the establishment of a farm at some convenient locality, which fine stock horses, cattle and sheepcould be bred. This report came under the cognizance of his excellency Li, with the result that an interview between the consul general, a breeder from New York and Li was brought about, The Now York breeder urged the ad- vantages of a good stock farm very strongly, and his excellency took up the matter warmly, Through his active interest and influence Mr, Tang King Sing, an active and progressive mandarin, was con- vinced of the superiority of western ideas, and at once declared his will- ingness to give them a trial. His farm consists of abbut 5,000 acres near the Kalping coal mines, now be- ing opened by foreign engineers under his superintendence, situated about eighty miles to the north of Tientsin, Ho has obtained some United States cattle, which will be used with the native stock for the purpuse of testing the practicability ol tE:‘-um(uliun- which have been made. Mr. Tang King Sing announces that in the pro- motion of this enterprise his object is to afford his countrymen an opportu- nity to become pos: od of at least a portion of the teience alroady attained by western natious in the improve- ment of their breeds of cattle, The result of this movement will be watched with no little interest, Horsford's Acid Phosphate as a Brain Tonio DR. Some of them refuse to tell their names, and, in faof, his vexations are many. He does not propose to atand it any longer, if ho can help, and so has mucceeded in securing enough names to commence on, has served notices, and proposes to commence wiits and see what the courts will do with them, if they do not come to time before, refuse 8o to do Mr. bheldon's Good Shot. Banta Fe News, H. Sheldon left his camp at Cooper City, on the Pecos, last Satur- day afternoon, in search of game, About 4 o'clock in the afternoon the burro, which had wandered ahead, came running bick, apparently in great terror, ears and tail erect, eyes glaring, making that peculiar, mourn- ful sound for which its species are noted, and refusing to be caught or comforted. Not being able to make out from the report of the confused burro just what bad happened, Mr. Sheldon cocked his gun and advanced sluwly and cautiously upon the un- known enemy. Crawling along on his hands and knees for about a guar- ter of a mile, he at length doubled a bend in the river, and there, standing in the meadow and not more than a hundred and fifty yards away, he saw a huge grizzly bear with three cubs, and just beyond the bear and in direct range with her, an animal that he at once recognized as the long sought-for elk. Neither of the beasts was aware of his approach, so, quietly rising upon one knee and resting his rifle acroes the other, which is Mr S.’s favorite position in shooting, he took deliberate aim. Bang weut the gun, away sped the bullet, and down fell two animals —in fact, three—the bear, the elk, and Mr. S. himself. The bullet had cut the backbone of the bear completely in two, and, passing on through, had lodged in tho heartof the elk, and the extraordinary task to which the rifla had been rfuhjected produced such a violent recoil thacthe hunter himself stretched upon the Recovering himself dily, Mr. S. advanced upon the prey, hunt- ing kuife in hand, but life was extinct in both animals. The little cubs, on the report of the gun, fled; but, being only a few weoke old, wore spesdily captured, tind in bags, and fastened en the back of the horse.
