The affairs of government are the most important and prolific source of discussion with most of the people, and will be till after the fall election and why should it not be! KEvery- one should take a great interest in affairs of state. It is a matter that demands everyone’s co-operation, as thoe present campaign is an important one to!Nebraska, This will be a new deal for Nebraska, and it is important that we start right, The most essen- tial feature of the coming elec- tion is the question of congress- man. Does northern Nebraska, the Third congressional dis- trict, want Valentine, who has r«'prvsu)(ul the whole stato for two whole terms and part of another, The very fact ot Valentine having served the state so long should be a reason why the Third district now should ro- ject him for re-election. Is there not a bare possibility that Valentine'scon- stituency in the two southern dis- tricts would get as much from him as the Third district/ IXach of the southern districts will elect a man who will represent their respective dis- tricts, and not be so directly, under obligations to the whole state. Does this large and rapidly improving northern district want a man who has represented all these sections! T think not, but a man who will represent this district first and the state at large next. Valentine would be the isst man to represent a single district as the state is now divided. One of his chief aims since his first election has been to impreas upon the peoplo the importance of returning congressmed. Does this mean himself/ Val. has too many cunningly divised forces all over the disirict in working order. He has control of the postoflices; a contract that these offices willdo their best to secure his election. It would be no worse if he had bribed each with the amount of the income of these offices to do work for him. With the great majority this is the case. In many instances he has had removed good and competent men— men whom the people and patrons of such offices were entirely satisfied with, and others put in their places that were obnoxious to the great maiority. He has made reom for editors when possible (by the way Val. was a prin- ter once) who would, through their papers, work on the minds of people in his behalf, quote the little sayings of three or four other papers through- out the state in Val’s favor, and oc- casionally say some little thing him- self for the other papers to copy, and thus keep the ball rolling in the little ring, working in this way on the people. If there are not editors enough for every oflice, he takes up with some one who will throw away all independence of character, and for congideration of the office will do his best for Valentine, rezardless of all other interests. Four cases in Holt county will illustrate how ‘Our Vaul.’ manipulatee. Mr. Mathews, of The Frontier, by claiming great instrumentality in the success of the repulican pariy last fall, but which the people know to be false, anl that he positively injured the party and lessened its majorities in many cases and helped in none, promised Valentine that if he (\'ul)wnuld give Mathews the O'Neill postoffice he would bring he delegation from Holt county and un- organized territory next fall for Val- entine—a clear bargain and sale. So Mathews assumes to carry Holt county in his vest pocket; to lead the people around like puppets. It also shows what kind of “one of the boys” “‘our Val.” is, to take such a promise. Well, Mathews got the office on this contract for piping for Val. through his paper. Before he got his commission a remonstrance was signed by more than nineteen twentieths or the patrons of “the oftice, In fact, he was the most un popular man at home and in his pre- cinet, but Val, had the Yrumiuu, and the little paper for outside influence. A delegation of two men naccom- panied the remonstrance to Wash- gton, said it must stand as he ordered, but admitted that he ‘““thought he had made a mis- take,”’ ete. The senators and Mr, Hatton, first assistant postmaster gen- eral, assurcd the delegation ‘‘that so far as they were concerned, Mr. Mathews' commission would not is- sue;” that ‘‘they did not put in such men,” ete. But Valentine soon after came round and ordered Mr, Hatton (who, by the way, is also a printer and a friend of Valentine), to issue the commission, which was done, 1Is this reprenenting the people or Valentine ¢ That Valentine did grossly wrong the people and patrons of the O'Neill postoftice and trample upon their rights, and put in a man alienated from the people, even the republican party—for the latter, according to the vote cast last fall in this precinet for county officers, to say nothing of the state ticket, four out of every fiv signed the remonstrance against Mathews, The democrats, of which this precinet and patrons of the (' Neill postoffice, are a large majority of all voters, more than 97 per cent signed it, Say this 18 o imposition on the people! It is tyranny of the worst form, Soon after this, Valentine, thinking the people would acquiese and rally around the ‘‘top dog,” in order to make Mathews as |1lu||||n(\m A8 possi ble, appointed him “overseer” of Holt county postoffices. Mr, Mathews was ordered to Stuart to select & man for a new postmaster. Mr. Mathews chose Mr. Hallock, and his name was sent in, and in due time his appoint ment came. A remoustrance was signed by more than a score one, and his pet man, Mr. The commission did | It made Val. Hatton, pause, not issue. By the Hallock mmissioner not get ckot and the repub way, this Mr wanted to be county last fall, and beocause the nomination, holted the opposed in part if 1 lican nominees. Val ter from a man at Atkinson, “1 don't know much about Hallock, " his tool, and said this man All he did know was what Mathews, wrote him Things ran along in susponse at Stuart till about threo weoks ago, when a grocery clerk of O'Neill moved to Stuart to “‘go into business,” as was reported, but before he had been there long enough to entitle him to vote he received his appointient as postmaster of Stuart. Words can- not portray with what righteous in- dignation the people were moved, Who would not? Think of it! TIm- porting a stranger thirty miles to be postmaster. Werenot thocolonial people of thiscountry imposed upon by English appointed governors without their consent! And did not the blood of revolution settle this very question! Valentine and all his supporters should sneak off for shame into some corner where they belong, for such gross violation of the spirit and prin- ciples of our government. A saint from Deity would be spurned with contempt and ostrasized for such im- position, This disgracefu! manoeuvre was another chapter of Mathews and another as ringleaders, I think there was misrepresentation in this as in the postoftice removal f of O'Neil, but this only shows Valen- tine in a worse light, for confiding so much in a man who is 80 thoroughly unreliable and shortsighted in polities. What better can be expecte.? A re publican in linois, a democrat in Wisconsin, independent aud aftor- wards a pretended republican in No- braska, Valentine seems to be court ed by a great many ot such vasilating, unfortunate, weak-minded men. The Long Pine News, now The Western News at Ainsworth, Neb., has been tolling for Valentine, and claime to be *‘straight republican.” Mr. Snith left O'Nei! about six months ag where he had been publishing domoeratic in- dependent paper for two years, but now he 18 a Valentine republican. Valentine by his own tetions has done enough to choke hmself, but such men as Mathews, Smith, Graves and others of the like, and especially Mathews will surely hang him Valentme has done 1o more for Ne- braska than other men, He has done nothing but what thestate demand- ed. Ho has not been righty oftene than others, and has 10 claim to ro- election or mortgage o the people. On the other hand tere are serious reasons why he should not be return- ed to congress. Nor should the peo- ple send Judge Barnas who is likely to be a silent candidite. Mr. Barnes in the event of Vilentine's defeat, will come in to fill Val's shoes. The third district woulc not be much better represented by Mr. Barnes for he and Valentine bave for the last six yoars made their mutual interests common cavse. When Mr. Valentine was judge, Mr. Barues was city at- torney of the same district. When Mr. {‘LIL]! died Mr. Valentine was appointed to fill the unex- pired term. Mr. Barnes was also appomnted to fill the place of Valentine as district judge. Mr. Barnes aominated Mr. Valen- tine for coigressman., At the same clection Barns was made judge, and hotr have held the respec- tive positions snce. The promotion of one has been tie promotion of the other, and now, the defeat of Valen- tine, perchancq will bo the success of the other.
