Three-fifths of the legal voters county have petitioned ¢ to call a county seat election A young man of Blai says: “The play of the ‘Hidden Hand' is a good ome, but the ‘hidden foot' is more interesting to him The West Point Republican of last week contained an estray notice, a part of which reads as follows: A griy mare, half horse, with sore on left nllm)l\ffl 4 The Otoe lands cannot come into market this fall, as the bill has been amended by the house and will have to ba concurred in by the senate, which will not be accom- pfi:hwl this session of congress Deputy Treasurer Jay paid on Satur- day the last registered warrant on the county general fund, This is the first time since th: counly was orgamzed that the register has been clear, —[Osceols Record. Thowas Clatk, a six. year-old son of Mr, John Clark while playing Tuesday even- i, stepped unon & sharp stick that ran into the ball of his foot nearly two inches, The parents tried to pull the stick out and M,h] not, but broke it off in the foot, Dr, Holladay was called, and_after some cut- ting extracted the snag which was large s a pipe stem and an inch and a half long. — [Brownville Granger, A boy, about fourteen years of age, em- ployed at Fiank Kent's, a few miles south- east of town, mysteriously disappeared about two weeks ago, He started in the morning to go fishing in the riyer. taking his dinner with him and intending to stay all day., Ho has not been seen or heard of since. The boy was a stranger here and had Leen working for Mr. Kent about six woeks, He was a very quiet and well be- haved boy, and was apparently well pleas- ed with his home. Not having reason for ruuning away, Mr, Kent con des the boy must have besn drowned,—Red Cloud Argus, count of the splendid show for corn = Pawnee Enterprise. Several farmers are trying for the $25 premium offered by the directors of the Pawnee County Agricultural snd Mechan. ical association for the best five acres of corn, raised in the county during this sea- won. There ought to be & score or more f competitors,— Pawnee Enterprise, Julging from a branch pruned h trees in J. D, Schock’s orch- sach crop will be enormous, On one twig a foot long there were twelve well formed and goo ches. Mr Schock has about tw trees and all loaded with fruit,—Blue Springs Motor. It is & novel sight to see hogs herded like cattle and sheep; but the high price of corn has driven many farmers to try the experiment, and we are glad to state it is proving very successful, Hogs are doing nicely on the fact that “‘all fl ton Guard, Probably the honor of having the best garden in Furnas county belongs to Jake Struve, at Oxford, who has abont twenty acres planted to all kinds of vegetablos, which are looking remarkable well, He has also planted n large quar treos and shrabbery, ail of wh artificinlly_watered by h Arapahoe Pioneer, Sheep-shearing is now in fall blast in our county, and reports from flock owners are to the el that fle will averags a trifle lighter than provious years in conse. quence of 5o much weather, Our wool clip for this sexson will aggregate ful- ly oue hundred and fifty thousand p unds, and next year, it is predicted, will almost double the above amount,—Arapahoe Pioneer, How much will corn grow in twenty- four heurs, with such weather as we had last week? A farmer who has experiment- ed, says three inches, Another gives as a good way to measre corn the following: aup the stalk of corn in the hund, draw it up to its full height, cut off square the tips of all leaves, The two n\ll.n{:lu leaves will not grow and in twenty-four hours ying to the windmill,— On last Friday afternoon, quite a liltle excitement was caused in town by the dis- covery of a peculiar shaped cloud in the northeast, which was yronounced by many to be a wnlur-uumm Fiom T, H,” Saun- ders we learn that it was a tornado, It passed over the northwest corner of Butler county, about four miles east of Mr, Saun- ders’ farm, which is near the line. A cow. was carried bodily for some little distance by the d and killed, In some places the wind cut a furrow through plowed land to the depth of two and one-half feet. It came in contact with no buildings or we might be called upon to chronicle something of a serious nature.—Osceola Record. Henry Wangner, living four miles south- east of town, was alarme ! about 9 o’clock Monday nlg ht by the flare of fire, upon feninx up he discovered his shed contain- ng his machinery to be en fire, It was covered with cane pumice, and was set on fire by some one, His horsés were staked d one was missing at time of fire, this horse retarned about three hours after the fire coming from the west, well warm. ed up and evidently it had been ridden hard, The presuuiption is the sinner that set out this fire rode the horse off tar enough to get out of danger of pursuit. Henry lost a self-binder, bay rake and seeder, 'I'his loss came heavy, as the in- suranc: will cover only what the machin. was worth at the time of fire, and he will bave to buy the same new, and pay the ditference, — Blue Hill Times, A few nights since, near New Castle, Dixon couuty, an attempt was made to rob the residenca of a widow woman, Mrs, L. 8. Bishop, She happened to be away from home leaving two small children in charge of two young ladies, After the latter had retired for the night, an unknown man broke into the onn‘ and entering the sleeping room of the girls caught oue of them by the hair, and utt mpted to catch .fl;l other by the .lnhd\‘ofi. The atten- tion of the observers was kept riveted on this cloud by noticing that a black ball was whirling in the cloud wing denser and denser each second, Shortly this ball nettled to the lower edge of the cloud, and then it assumed the appearance of a fun. nel, gradually lengthening out toward the ground. Soveral times it drew back to- ward the cloud, and would then stretch out l“l‘n longer than before, Movin, gracefully thmuflh the air, it reminded every one of an elephant’s trunk, It ex- tended downward probably sixty teet, and was within one huudred feet of theyround, The end appeared to be revolving in s sp ral form, and very rapidly, Toen about one-third of it became detached and lit i wmong the sending up a great co umu of dust, and the remaindes twisted itself back into the cloud. Lew Ley, who wis within balf a mile of the black mons- ter, sud such it reaily appeared, heard the roaring sound which “characterized the cy- clone lust fall, and immediately after the detached portion struck the ground the wind was 50 strong that he thought it would capsize bis buggy, It was o grand sight, and one that will ‘always be remem. bered. —Reglster, Farm, Garden and Orchard, J, J, Pettis sheared from his 101 fine wool sheep 1,000 pounds or nearly 10 to the head. M. 8. Malony, of Belvidere, 1., who 1s interested in & large sheep ranch a few miles southeast of town, came in Monday night. Heis enthusiastic over the crop prospect in Nebraska and thinks Nebraska e i happiest mortals on earth. Large districts in Illinois and portions of Towa through which he passed, will remain uncultivated this year in _con* sequence of floods. He predicts a large emigration to Nebraska from other states within the next few months, The readers of the Argqus will remember that Mr, Ma- lony last winter had a large silo construct- ed on his sheep ranch and he is here for the purpose of examining tho atructure and directing some details about filling it. He has ,mrcfi.mnl the machinery for cut ting the ensilage, its capacity being ten tons per hour. ‘He thinks 50 cents per ton will cover the cost of the ensilage in the silo. Mr. M. has thoroughly investi- gated the subject of ensilage and of his ul- timate success with the experiment here, we have little d wbt.- Red Cloud Argus, The Bound Unloosed. Chas, Thompson, Frauklin street, Buf- “‘T have suffered for a long time with constipation, and tried almost every purgative advertised, but only resulting in temporary relief, and _after ‘constipation still more aggravated,” I was told about your SPRING Brossom and tried it, I can now say I am cured, and though’ some montha have elapsed, still remain so. shall, however, always keep some on hand in case of old complaint returning.” Price 50 cents; trial bottle 10 cents. A Town With One Rallroad—] vantages and Disadvantages. Aa- Correspondence of The Bee, Nesrasga Crry, June 26.—Ne- braska Oity is recognized as one of the old and reliable towns in the state and this is too well known to need any description. Depending largely upon the country for its support it is at this time of the year rather quiet. Farmers are too busy to go to town if it can be avoided. After the crops are har- vested Nebraska Oity always presents a lively appearance. The older por. tion of the city built nearer the river is slowly being deserted, while the business center is ir:dnl]ly changing, The old stores are being deserted, and in their place we find costly struc- tures of brick farther up town As a stranger enters the city from the depot he first sees these deserted stores and is at once convinced that Nebraska Oity is going backward, but he would think differently if he would understand that the places have been left for more commodious places ot busi- ness farther up town. As one passes up Main street and soes the old Sey- more House, with its broken windows and a general appearance of decay pravading it, it seems like the skele- ton of departed prosperity. On the contrary it points with pride to its ture farther up town, known as the Grand Central hotel, It is unfortunate that the railroad dopot, which is itself a most insignifl- cant building, is 80 located that yisi- tors are first introduced to the poorest part of the city. Considerable building is going on and several new firms have started within the past six months, Among theso is the firm of Butt & Brauer, who have opened a well stocked furni- ture store on Main street. As both of these gentlemen were formerly conuected with other houses in the samo elty, they have been able to work up a very fine business, A hotel known as the Barnum house haa been opened at the corner of Main strect and Eighth. The location is very conventent and the house is re- ceiving a large patronage. Business men reporttrade as belng more brisk at present than is usual at this time of the year, The business prospect for this fall is very good, There is n great deal of talk in the city regarding the tnconvenieuce of crossing the river, Parties wishing to leave the town by the railroad are are obliged to cross the river cn the railroad transfer to East Nebraska Oity at an expense of fifty conts, The greatest objection to the system is the tme it takes. There is no transfer to moet the late train at night and those who cross are obliged to hire a skiff, The inconvenience to trayel sometimes very great. The citizens of Nebraska City are making an etfort to induce the railroad to put up a new and wore commodious depot, It is to be boped that they will succeed as it will be & great bmprovement to the city A. 0, D, ——— Bucklin's Arnica Salve, The Bst SALvE in the world for Cuts Bruises, Boros, Ulcers, Balt Rheawn, Fe vor Sores, Tetter, Chapped H Chil blaing, Corne, and all skin eruptions, and i It is guaranteed to woney refunded, For sale by O, ively cures piles, o satisfuctfon or rice, 25 cbuts per box, F.
