The weather was unusually fine and everything seemed to conspire to add INTEREST AND HARMONY, The ball play on Sunday afternoon was broken up by ashower, and many carriages and pedestrians went pell- mell for the city, while the ‘‘the boys” gathered in the stables, and a few of the ladies and gentlemen, more fortu- nate in location, found shelter at the grand stand; but it was often re- marked that this week was the lucky week of the season, for the weather was fine. THE RUNNING RACE, one anl one-half mile dash, on Tues- day, was won by J. W. Norton in 2:46}, and Ella Rowett sccond. The excitement was great, when it was found that Ella Rowett had made the first two rounds of this half-mule track in 1:45}, and then came in sccond, and that a mile in 1:45} on a half mile new track is almost equal to any time on record, and was pronounced by many horsemen quite the best. THE POOLS sold slowly, and the amount of money handled during these races was small when compared with many other such gatherings, although the usual amount of excitement was found in some of the well contested races, and much fun and amusement brought out by the usual tricks of the jockeys. It is understood that one driver was ruled off for some irreguiarity and was un- wittingly accepted by the manage- ment as a new driver, whea he had put on clothing of another color, and thercby he held his position as driver and prevented his horse from winning, and another cclebratei horse saving himself from being distanced by rua- ning continuously almost the whole mile, and just closing up past the distauce flag, as the leaders went un- der the wire. But all in all, the first meeting of this asscciation was a grand success, and all seemed to be well pleased. The grounds, for some time before this, have been leased, and there has often been some clash- ing of interests; but lately a half score of the wealthy citizens, of the place have crganized themselves into an as- sociation, with Dr. M. N. Graves as secrotary, and purchased the grounds and made a magnificent new half-mile track at a large expense, repaired the buildings and fences, erected valuable new buildings, clnding & grand stand thatis perhaps 200 feet in length, and propose hereaiter to manage it systematically, and on o sound finan- cial basis, as the company hus plenty of money. ATLANTIC is supposed to contain nearly 5,000 people, and spreads away over the lit- tle hills and around over the slopes, and along the valleys, reminding one of a *city set on a hill,” and too big for the hill. The new $65,000 court house, behind the public park, is near- ly roofed, and ornamented with its metal cornice. The grand union school building, standing on the high- est grounds, in nearly as commanding a position as Fairmount park at Coun- cil Bluffs, which is so litile known by the public, or even by many of the patriotic Bluffors, is this week attract- ing a little attention from the fow who are assisting in the annual examination of classes, The packing house is said to do a large and constantly incroas. ing business, and there is strong talk of building another, The creamery is supposed by the public to be in a good condition, although we wore un fortunate in not finding any officials who could give the required informa- tion, and the great pile of stone and lumber on the flats to the southwest is beginning to assume a deflinite form a8 a new br , and new buildings are going up n various parts of the town. Fine large brick business houses are being planted in the busi- ness centers, where there are gaps in the rows of trading houses, The Tel- egraph and Domocrat issue afternoon oditions, six times a week, besides their regular weeklice, and the Mes senger deals out *Churchill and the amendment” on every lacky Friday, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT are supphed, at present, with good hook and ladder instruments and trucks, and a “‘soda fountain” engine, and the boys who “‘run with the ma chine,” aré expecting to attend the Yiremen's Tournament at Muscatine next week, and we expoct they will be heard from at the place before this reaches the readers of Tue Beg, for the boys are “well up” in the games, anfl it will require a strong team of well disciplined men to defeat them. We understand the band is expeeting to go with them, and as it is one of the best in this part of the State, and possibly quite the best, Cass county will be well represented, and with the boys from Council Bluffs, will furnish adelegation that Southwestern Iowa ATTORNEY-AT-LAW. ONE MORE UNFORTUNATE was buried yesterday, who had been looked upon us an ornament to society. It is stated that a dozen years ayo a woalthy Chicago gentleman and his wife settled in Council Bluffs, but in- temperance and irregular habits lead down_hill as surely as ‘‘drowsiness will clothe a man mn rage,” Tt is not worth while to follow all the hstory, or trace vven the causvs of failure and ation of husband and wife, or what prompted the wife to lead n cheekered and sinful life; but we follow her from the home of luxury refinement and wealth to the keeping of u *homo for foundling children,” and then to a life of shame. A half dozen years since she opened a house in Atluntic, aud haes accumulated some | property, iucluding a respec house and lov for a home. Possessed of many wowanly virtues and refined tastes, a lady by birth and education, it is said she always commanded the respect of the public, and in all her dealings was called strictly honest, maintaining on the sircets and in all public places a proper and unquestion- able deportment. OFf late her hopes have centered on another whom she loved, and who was “‘more respecta- ble” than she because he was a man, but the second and last love was not rc- turned, und she fell lower in the scale, Thirty days in the jail for *‘disorderly conduct” 1 ejecting the other suitor, and she is again at liberty to find an order commanding all of her class to lonve the town, As she steps out of prison she declares, My home and my life are here and I will never leave the town.” That night, when the races were over and the crowds were making merry over wine and song; when the throngs had subsided from the strects, and the quict of evening lulled nature to rest, the phy called, with his stomach | antidotes, but it 1s too late, L'ne pois- on has done its dendly we We must admire the convi wife, who still clings to her husband with all his faults 1f he but love her. ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED, A Young Boy Meets His Death in the Waters of Cup Lake. Yesterday morning a lad 12 years of age, William_ Clary by name, in company with someyoung companions, went bathing in Cup lake. about one west ot the depot. When in rather doep water the boy Clary was, it is supposed, seized with cramps, and the other boys being un- mile transfor able or too much excited to render any assistance, he was drowned. His companions ran to gome mon who were workicg sowe distance from the lake and related what had happened. Thoy immediately hurried to the spot and began diving for the body. The boys beinyg too badly frightened tagive any very definite directions as to where ho went down, it was some time before the men wero succes:ful in their exertions, but the body was finally brought up by John Carl. The remains were conveyed to his home on lower Broadway and Coraner Faul promptly notified.
