An Immizrant’s Lament at Being Forced to Fulfill a Labor Con- tract, 2 New dork Star. During a preliminary examination of a charge made against Detective Mahoney of Brooklyn by an attache ot the postoffice of that city, a most remarkable story was brought to the surface. It would appear that a man- ufacturing company at Grosvenor Dale, Conn., has a contract with the Inman Steamship company to bring Swedish emigrants to this country for service in their works, Recently 200 of these Swedes were brought out under this agreement, among whom was a young girl named Maria Swensen. The Connecuticut company paid all the expenses of the girl to this country, and she signed a contract to work for them until she’ could repay them. Maria, upon landing, was informed that she would have to work for very small wages, and was also told that it would not be safe for a young girl to go to Grosvenor Dale. She there- upon determined to ignore her con- tract and to hide away from those who might force her to carry it oat. By tho assistance of some Swedish friends, she managed to leave Castle the Connecticut company, and for some time was u\lccellFully concealed in this city. Thinking it would be safe to leave her hiding place, she procured board in the house of P, R. Johnson at No. 3256 Atlantic avenue, Brooklyn, and took up her residence there. Mre, Dale, the New York manager of the Inman company who had been informed by the Con- nectieut people of the girl's escape from their hands, went to Johnson's house and demanded, that the girl be delivered into his custody. The boarding-house keeper refused to give Maria up, informing Mr. Dale that as he was not an officer of the Iaw he had no right to make any such de- mand. Dale, as Johnson alleges, said that he would go out and get an ofticer, Subsequently Detective Mahoney of the Third (Brooklyn) precinct called at Johnson’s house, and show- ing his shield, asked that the girl might be given into his custody. John. son was not at home, and his wife told the detective that she knew noth- ing of the matter. While the parley between these two was going on, one Garden unobserved by the agents of E of the boarders, a postofice employe named Feuk, came to Mrs, Johnson's assistance and told Mahoney that he had no right whatever to demand the young Swede unless he was armed with a warrant, This, acoording to the statement made at the investiga- tion, aroused the ire of the detective to such a pitch that he became abus- ive. *I don't want any of your interfer- ence,” he exclaimed. “1 don't want to interfere, but I should like to see your warrant,” urged the servant of 6nnle Sam, *If you don't stop your interference I'll throw you out of the window,” retorted the officer. While this animated dispute was in progress Johnson returned home and at once joined the discussion, and ob- jected to producing the girl, “If T can't get the girl any other way I'll go through every room in the house,” shouted’ Mahonoy. Johnson became alarmed, and, not thoroughly acquainted with the rights of the gir), he thought he was bound to give her up, He went upstairs and returned with Maria Swensen, who was weeping bitterly. *Maria,” he said, cer. and 1 can't re The girl, amid her sobs and tea beeged Johnson most pathetically not to give her up. The boaxding-house keeper, however, was afraid to make any further objection, and thegirl was taken to Oastle Garden by Mahoney and a man who accompanied him, Johnson followed the trio, and as he says, saw the frightened and terrorized ‘‘here's the offi- after which he was fcrcibly ejected from the gerden. Mahoney was so infuriated at what he regarded as the interference of Feuk that he went to Postmaster McLeer and made a charge against him of interforing with an of- hoer, Col. McLeer dismissed the charge after examination, and direct- ed Feuk to make charges against the dotective, i and the facts given above were laid before Inspeotor Jewett yesterday, and will be investi- gltesl at an early date. The boarding house keeper, who wus also before the inspector, said that he heard Mr, Dale ay he ;ou:d deliver the girl to the nnectiout company if it cost him $60,000 od 'opularity, TroMas' Ecrrotric Oi has obtained great popularity, from its intrinsic value ws o relisble medicine, in curing hoarse- ness, and all irntations of the throat, dis. eases of the chest, eto, I'or these it is an incomparable pulmonic, 181w ment In Dafly and Weekly.
