Preston, Kean & Co., bankers, report: That the opening of the Chicago Stock Exchange has given new activity to the market here and stronger pr ecs for all lo- cal securities, There has been during the past week a depressed feeling regarding gevernment bonds, and the price has been at a stand- still, The latest quotations to-day being almost identical with those of last Friday or the 4 and 4} per cent. bonds, but to § por cent lower for the extended 5's, 1t is apprehended that if the bill now being dis- cussed in congress extending the charters of the national banks shall pres without radical change from the recommendations of the committee, the long term bonds of the government issues will surely feel the effects, and make substantial advance in price. ‘The market to-day is quiet and dull, the only activity displayed heing in local se- curities, which since the opening of the new stock exchange have been imbued with new hife. Government bonds are quiet at same rates as yesterday, and are in little de- mand. Municipal bonds and prairie, state and county securities are being inquired for and meet with ready sale at prices to uet 4} to 5 per cent. per annum, Bastera exchange is in demand at from 76 to 80e per $1,000 premium between banks.
