o ~-ry 2 THE DAILY BEE-~THURSDAY MAY 11, 1882. BLAINE TO THE RESCUE. The Man from Maine Sees the Republican Party's Peril, ‘Which He Attributes to Lost Opportunities and Loss of Leadership. And 18 Almost Persuaded to Place Himeelf at the Helm. He Will Go to Congress and Raise the Ory of Reduotion of Taxes- Washington Special to the St. Louis Repuglican, Some of Mr. Blaine's friends s that he has about made up his mind to listen to the pleading of certain Maine republicans and yield his own inclinations to their wishes. That is the way they put it. Stripped of po- litical rhetoric, it is almost officially announced that Blaine intends to go back to the house of reproses The only question that he has at all considered this winter in reference to to future political action hea been that of health. He has, however, gone through a trying winter without any severe recurrence of the rheumatic gout which assumed such a serious form last year, and he is inclined to think that he has this enemy in subjec- tion. Blaine is known to have greatly wished that he could have been on the floor of the house this winter. He has spoken of the utter lack of leader- ship there, and of the .Y‘ endid oppor- tunity for it. Ho says that the repub- licans have thrown away chance after chanceofdoing that which would greatly strengthen the party, and he has used, by llfmounu, pretty vigorous Anglo- Saxon in his comments on the course the party has taken under its many headed leadership. But great as have been, in his view, these opportunities, those that will open to the republi- cans in the lower house in the forty- known among ‘‘the creme de la creme of society,” to use the favorite phrase of Globe-Democratsocietyreporters, as “‘Sam” Stone, _He is a son of ex-Con- gressman W, H. Stone, who repre- sented the Third district for two terms previous to Mr. Graham F'rost's elec- tion. The susceptible nature of “‘Sam” was unable to withstand Miss Lily's charms, His attention became marked, and now it is whispered in society that they are engaged. Ane other young gentleman was also fasci- nated by the brilliant belle. It was Mr. Pete Nicholson, a cousin of jolly Dave Nicholson, and connected with the family that established the cele- brated wholesale grocery firm, The curious part of the knightly deed is, that the modern invention, the tele- phone, was the cause of the hostili- ties, One evening Pete Nicholson tel- ephoned Miss Woodbridge that he and his friend Al. Robinson, intend calling on her. Miss Woodbridge also replied per telephone, she was awful- ly sorry, but she was engaged that evening; would Mr, Nicholson and Mr. Robinson call some other evening. Mr. Nicholson swal- lowed his disappointment and answered telephonically that he was " |not certain tnat he would call, but at any rate his friend would call next evening. Now when a love-sick swain sends such a message to a young lady, it is safe to wager he will go. It was at this critieal juncture that the wires became crossed, and Miss Woolridge, with her listening auricular, only cnught the first part of the message and accordingly imagined that the PLEASURE OF MR, NICHOLAON'S VISIT was indefinitely postponed. She mur- mured through the telephone, in ac- cents tender, the very unromantic phrase, ‘‘All riiht—h-ta—good-b 444 —off,” and the bell sounded s connect. Thus ended Act L. The next evening went without say- ing Mr. Nicholson changed his mind. He determined to accompany his friend Al. Robinson, and both called at Mra. Nave's residence. To their surprise they found that Miss Wool- ridge and Miss Bennett had gone out driving under the escort of Mr, Stone 'HE DAILY BEE MAHA PUBLISHING CO., PROPRIETORS. 016 Farnham, bet. 0th and 10th Btrests. A VERY HEAVY LOAD for the party to carry. Certain other republicans may be left at home. There are men like Dunnell, who, like the fly in the fable, stand on a coach- wheer and say what a great dust I stir up. The opportunity for a leader of experienco, Blaine foresees will be great. Besides he has said that he never for one day has been out of the house that he did not have a yearning to be back there, Blaine believes, it in said, that’there is too much taxa- tion, and the next campaign cry may be on that issue. With a surplus roli- ing up towards two hundred millions, and at the same time the prices of provisions and the neoessaries of life increasing, Blaine thinks that the re- publican party is making a great mis- take in not outting down taxation, ‘The failure to do this may give the next houso to the demoorats, In his view, then they can make political capital by reducing taxes, unless fore- stalled by the republicans under the loud and self-asserting leadership, of which Blaine is master, How many more visions Blaine sees and dreams 18 not knowh, but he seems to be satisfied with the outlook, Whether the determination to lead the Maine cohorts is the effect of the visions or the visions the effect of the determination is not material to the friends of Blaine, who have been con- sulting here for a few days, SEVERAL MAINE LIGHTS have been here. Col. Boutelle, who edits a paper in Bangor, and was boat- en for congress by Ladd, escorted Blaine to the foreign affairs commit- tee rommittee room and looked stern- 1y at Perry Belmont during that mem- orable scene, @ The heads of the re- B;blioan congressmen with that of utelle and two or three others have been very close together. The result of this communion is the open secret that Blaine will head the republican congressional ticket, and that the tail of iv will be Reed, hql:’ and Bou- telle. Frye is entire) this ent, o has been cool towards Blaine. It always loft & bad taste in e's mouth when he shout- for Blaine, but this arrangement leaves the coast olear for the logisla: ture to send him back to the senate, Hale was pleased of course, Reed was delighted. He squeezed in this time on a little more than a huadred mnuty and his seat is contested. He feared that thegeneral ticket upon which the Maine candidates for con- a8 must run would be beaten next I, but if Blaine goes into the can- vass Reed feels sate, At all events, if he goes down, he will go down with Blaine. It is eyen reported here that, as a result of these conferences, peti- tions are being circulated throughout the Maine villages urging Mr. ' Blaine torun. That is a now way of canvass- ing, and when the petitions, a mile long or 8o, come in, they will afford Blaine the chance of writing a letter that will sound the tocsn and in which he will bow to the will of the people, LILLIE'S GREEN.EYED LOV. Louis Correspondence Kansas City Times: One of the most admir- ed belles of "ufipcrhndom" in this dusty town is Miss l‘nz Woolridge BShe is the adopted daughter of Mrs, Abram Nave, with whom she resides Jin a fashionable mansion in the West End, on Locust street. Dliss Wool- ridge is & recent debutante. She is sweet nineteeu, handsome, graceful and accomplished. She took society by storm and created a sensation || among theimpressionable beaux of the haul ‘iut summer she was Stone was too much, and young Nich- olson showed he was piqued. The lady abologized and presently Nichol- son and Robinson appeared to take their departure. Mrs, Nave accom- panied them to the hall and she once more apologized for the miunderstand- ing. At that moment Stone came out of the parlor. He was also somewhat jealous of Nicholson, so he remarked isolently to Mra, Nave: ‘‘Oh, don’t muko any explanation to him, Don’t mind it.” Nicholson retorted: *‘You will have to TALK TO ME HEREAPTER ABOUT THAT,” Mrs. Nave at Mthis point withdrew, and Stone angrily retorted, ‘‘Come on, settle it now,” walking at the same time in the direction of the gar- den at the rear of the house. Nichol. son, however, kept his temper and answered, ‘‘No here; I will settle it later.” With that, accompanied by his friend Robinson, he withdrew. But, smarting under the insulf; as he deemod it, he and his friena hied them to the house of their friend Massengale, in the vicinity, where they could securoly watch the exit of Mr. Stone from Mrs. Nave's house, The hours passed and ten o'clock had struck before Mr. Stone and Mr, Rex spid adieu to the ladies and emerged into the street. They walked down Locust street, but had not gone very far before they were overtaken by Messrs, Nicholson and Robinson. ~ Opposite Dr. Tudor's church, at Ewing and Locust streets, the quartette halted. ‘‘Now.” said Nicholson to Stone, *‘I want you to explain your insulting remark.” “I will give you an explanation,” sald Stone, letting fly with his right, which Nicholson parried. The battle then began in the ap- proved ];lrin ring fashion, Stone is a large, heavy built young man, while Nicholson is a light weight. Manful- ly they stood up, thofiulonl rivals, and pounded each other vigorously. Btone received a couple of black eyes, while the claret flowed freely from Nicholson's nose. At . last victory perched itself on the side of the light woight. The respective seconds, Mesars, Robinson and Rex, then in- terfored and each bore off his princi- to have their wounds attended to. The “first circles” were convulsed by this rough and ready hand-to-hand combat of two of its members, If it had been a duel it would not have been 80 bad, but evidently the appeal | to the code is falling into disrepute. And the confounded telephone is to blame for all the trouble, If the wires would only work properly this terrible fight might have been “avoid- ed.
