The true respect, esteem and ) the spirit of noble Burns for those never dying words, Many, many years ago, when I was a mere boy my good mother taught me these words: ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This rule, T do not say it egotisticall has been my guiding star thmugfl life, but now at forty-five I am ob- liged to say that whatever of success has attended me thus far on life’'s journey I owe to the teachings of my sainted mother. To what ex- tent I have lived up to the golden maxim in my relations with you, I will leave to your hearts to judge, Many times in the past fifteen yoars I have felt it my duty to say “go” to some of friends gura present. Those decisions, as far as I know, were ac- cepted by you without murmur. Why? because you believed me to bLe honest and sincere in my convictions upon all matters submitted for my opinion, Aaqd for this same cause do I'see before me this outpouring of re- spect and welcome to-night; there- fore we will hereafter as heretofore cultivate that spirit of mutual confi- dence from which only good can re- sult to all of us, Notwithstanding there is 5o much of pleasure in this reunion to-night, there is also to me a feeling of sadness connected with it. Two yes ago last July I was presented by the Union Pacific band with the picture ou observe against the wall. Then it represented all the members of the band. I see before me many of those sameo faces, Others are not here, but have gone to that ‘‘bourne whence none return.” There are others, too, ot ourlittle army, who to-night are lying on’ beds of pain and distress, with little hope of ever again joining our ranks. Let us think of them kindly, extend to them our sympathy, and do all in our power to ussist and comfort them, remembering the while *“’Tis not all of life to live, Nor all of death to die.” And now, my dear friends, permit me to say that my physical cendition is not ood. What effect further du- ties m? have upon it none can di- vine, 1 hope, as I know you do, that my health may enable ‘me to be of some future service; but if not, and it shall become necessary for me to sever my relations from this family circle, for indeed we are a railway family, whether I remain in Omaha, or elsewhere, you will not forget that at my 'home ‘‘the latch string ever hangs on the out- side for any and all those who have associated with me these long, tiresoma years, I shall be only too happy to meet you and grasp your hand in the same spirit ot friendliness which has characterized us this even- ing. 'Again accept my heartfelt thanks for this reception, for be assured the recollection of it will every remain bright and beautiful in my memory. SQUATTER RULE. The Call for a Speclal Session of the Third House. ‘Whereas, Tho constitution of Ne- braska provides that the governor may convene the legislature and other great men by lamation, and Whereas, The time is now near at hand when the right, left and center fielders should be put in training, to- gether with the usual number of shortstops, and Whereas, It is better we meet to- gether and talk matters over at the expense of the state, than pay the ex- pense ourselves; Therefore be it known thag in the absence of Pat O'Hawes, who is now in Washington lnaking after the in- terests ot the stato, I, J. W, Pear- man, ex-governor and candidate for re-election, do hereby issue my proclamation convening the third house in special session at the capitol in Lincoln, Friday, the 12th day of May, 1882, for the purpose of consid- ering and acting upon the following subjects for the legislature: 1. To apportion the state into three congressional districts and to provide for the election of repmunhtlvs- therein, and as many “‘contingent” representatives as there are disap- pointed candidates, 2. To amend an aet entitled an act, “‘Omaha and Nebrarka,” and to pro- vide for cities of the first class paying the expenses of mili oan{mn thereto when so wished by the mayor 3. To designate the candidates for state offices next fall, and to provide for the retention of J. W. Dawes as chairman of the state central commit- tee, should he fail to get the place that Alexander and Dinsmore want. 4. To improve the sanitary oondi tion ef the state capitol in order that members of the legislature may not play sck when important measures are being conside: 6. The appointment of a committeo to investigate the late ‘‘unpleasant- ness” in Omaha, and report who shall pay the fiddler; also to protect the rest of the state from democratio riots therein, In testimony whereof, T have here- unto set my d and caused the great signature of the speaker of the house to be aflixed, Done while on the wing, this 8th day of May, A. On Tuesday and Wednesday even- ings of next week an artiste who needs no introduction to the Omaha public will appear at Boyd's opera house, It is hardly necessary to more than mention the name of Janau- schek to recall pleasant memories in the minds of all lovers of legitimate dramatio Wrt. The distinguished tragedienne will appear in two of her greatost roles, each widely differing from the other, and perhaps as no two other assumptions could do, showing the great range of her powers.
