There were eight stroams thrown last ovening, six upon Karnam street, from Ninth to Fiftoenth, one at the corner of Fifteenth and Douglas and ono at the corner of Fifteenth and Dodge. The contract requires that eight stroams shall be thrown above a height of 110 feet. .The whole eight in this instance were thrown considerably higher than 110 feet at one time, with some wind prevailing against. Citv Engineers Rosewater and Tillotson were stationed upon the hill with instruments and took the measure, whilo Messrs, Corby and Thrane, of the council committee on water works and sowerage, were alno present to note the height of the streams. The streams wero thrown for a length of three quarters of an hour, and over a height of 135 feet; which is 40 feot higher than the dome of the opera house. There were five 1 inch nozzles, one 1} inch nozzle, and two 1} inch noz- zles ured in tho test, throwing more water than is called for, the contract requiring only eight streams from or.e inch nozzles, This was made necee- sary by the breaking of two or three nozzles. At the close of the eight-stream teat all hydrants were shut off except the one at the Wabash corner, when that single stream was testod as to its capability of throwing water over the opera house. A stream was thrown diagonally across the dome upon the rear portion of the building, which is across the highest point required, in order to cover it a stream from 166 to 175 feet long. The wind was blowing quite hard, but for all that tho water went clear over it, as was seen by a Bre reporter and others, who stood in front of McMahon & Abert's drug store. In this test one pump only was used, which was run at the rate of twenly -eight strokes per minute, and the whole town was at the time being supplied with water, every valve being opened. The consump- tion at this time of day 18 more than at any other, and duting the test was at the rate of 1,300,060 gallons for twenty-four honrs, A funny incident occurred on the corner of Fifteenth and Farnam when that hydrant was opened. The hose bursted just back of the nozzle, which was held by threemen, They dropped itin a hurry and ran. The tremen- dous force of the stroam caused the hose to gyrate and twist and cavort around like & wounded snake just be- fore sun-down, and the spectators who stood on either side of tho stroet fled to the inside of the houses for safoty from a wetting, Beforo the hydrant could be turned off, the noz zle was jerked clear off, and the length of hose to which it was at- tached ruined. The streets at each corner where a hydrant was located were deluged and the pedestrians had to run a regular gauntlot under the shetler of umbrel- las through the shower which fell around, The scene on Farnam street was shobugrnphed at the beginning of the isplay leou Away.
