A fellow full of bad whisky was roaming about in the vicinity of the Garner school house, near Park’s mills, Friday night, and amused himself by smashing the glass inthe windows of adjacent buildings. He successfully shattered the windows in the shool house, and also in Mrs, Boofield’s residence near by, Constable Rose- orans was sent out Saturday to arrest the man, named C. Holcomb. He had quite a lively time catching him, as Holcomb o & livelfi break from the rear of his house as the officer ap- proached the front. The constable drew his revolverand made the fellow come to time, and successfully cap- tured him, He has been lo!ged in Rev. P, F. A wreck was caused in the yards of the Chicago,” Burlington & Quincy railway, Friday evening, by a mere boy, Eddie Cole, aged about fourteen, throwing a switch. An engine and three cars were approaching, and the switch was as it should be, when the boy, who was playing about, threw the switch, and it was too late for the engineer to stop. The engine was damaged considerably, and three cars thrown off the track. The boy was arrested, but there being some doubt about establishing the fact that the boy did it maliciously, a charze was filed against him for jumping on and off the cars while in motion, that seem- ing to be the only offense which the boy can be punished for. His friends furnished bail for his ‘appearance, and the case was continued until next Wednesday. It is ssid in the boy's behalf that he has been in the habit of helping the men in and about the yards, and has often been allowed to turn a switch, which fact, if true, does away with malicious intent to a large extent. Bliss' sales of millinery was very large last month, because no such bar- gaina were evar offered before in Coun- cil Bluffs. ~Call and see the prices and goods. You will be convinced, celebration was the oration of Hon.|TO0 UTTERLY UTTER!| John Vanaulkinburg. That wasgood. 1t deserved a better audience and more favorahle circumstances under which to inspire its delivery, Dinner was served at two or more places in town, and reflected much eredit on the ladies who conducted it. The ball to-night was largely attended. The weather in this section has been as changable for the past month as it has been in Western Towa, Farmers are a great deal discouraged and say that unless a radical change occurs in the weather office and consequently throughout the country, and that very soon, short crops must be expected as a consequence. I find, ns o general thing, repub- licans here are in favor of renominat- ing Col, Hepburn for a second term; not because of anything he has done particulaely, but because it is custom- ary to give congressmen two terms in TIowa. Hepburn is looked upon as the tool and servant of the railroads, and two terms will end his public ca- reer no doubt. He is and has always been a sycophant of monopolies, but just now no one seems to care, in this district, to make the race against him in view of the precedent established in this state, which, let me add, is not a very wise one when a_poor incum- bent is in office.
