Even in the larger cities, where the law is feebly enforced, .there has been a reduction of fifty per cent in before the police courts. ELOPED FROM DENMARK, The Love of Woman Proves Stronger Than the Love of Country. A Young Couple Flee From the Old Country to This City to be Married. A romantic marriage occurred in this city yesterday the contracting parties being Loren A, Jensen and Miss Dortha M. Carlsen. The happy bridegroom was nineteen years of age, and the bride seven years older. Neithor was abla to speak a word of English, and the young man's aunt; Mrs, Martha Johnson, »>f this city served as interpreter in the perform- ance of the ceremony by Justice Bond at his office. The story of their love as told by her was to the effect that the young folks were residents of Olstedt, Denmark, where they become engaged, but owing to the tender age of the young man, and some other legal obstacles, they could not consume At Salina, recently, a rumseller was convicted in the district court on thirty-three charges, the fines amounting, in the aggregate, to three thousand five hundred dol- lars and costs, and thirty days im- prisonment in the county jail. An argument that probably convinced the rumseller that prohibition wasn't much of a faklure, To defeat the amendment, the liquor men raised a corruption fund of one hundred thousand dollare, They called a meeting and named 1t the ‘‘Peoples’ movement.”’ In it were one hundred and twenty-five saloon- keepers. They declared in their firat resolution that the law, if adopted, would increaso the sale and consump- tion of liquor. Think ot it! A body of 125 liquor dealers shedding tears for fear of an increase of business! They declared, after the passage of the law, that it would ruin the trade and business of the country. The business for 1881 of one railroad, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, in- creased nearly four millions oyer the earnings of the year 1880. The in- crease in the value of the assessment of propoerty for 1881 over 1880 was over ten millions of dollars. Then they said no foreign emigra- tion would come to the state. This would have been true, if foreigners came to the state to get drunk or drink liquors, rather than to secure homes, The foreign vote was cast largely for the amendment. McPherson county, largely foreign, gave 1,240 majority for prohibition, The state has gained grandly inpop- | 11 tor the first Insertion and FIVE CENTS ulation, and of the very best class, There is one spot where the 8tate | 1eave ady ortisements has lost in population on account of | peari Street, near Erondway. prohibition, and that is within the walls of the states prison. eleven months of 1880, under license, against only 175 the first eleven months of 1881, under prohibition. As soon after their arrival as possible, they secured the necessary license, got the justice to tie the knot; and propose now to settle here as husband and wife, and strike together for a happ; home and a fortune in the new land.
