The succees which has crowned the enterprise shown by the Shugart lm- piement company makes that estab- lishment one to which the city may well point with pride, and those who have not vieited 1t would, indeed, be surprised at its extent and the amount of business being there carried on. It has grown greatly sinco its start, in 1808, its location then being in a frame building on upper Broadway. A change was afterward taken to Main strect, and in September, 1880, it was incorporated as a stock com- pany, end the following winter lots were purchased on Main street, upon which they erected their present spa- cious building, it being of brick, three atories and basement, and cov- ering an area of fifty by one hundred teet. This building is used mainly for salesroom and ofiice purposes, but “Ultimate aim of Sunday school work,” were blended together and ably discussed by Messrs. Love, Stevens, Hoagland, Mayne, Walker and Irwin, Mr, J. 8, Love made a special re- port, presenting a constitution as a substitute for tho one now in use. The report was received and variously diecussed until time of adjournment, The afternoon session was opened with singing and prayer. Mrs. Don A. Judd presided at the organ during the session, and several spirited songs were sung from Gospel hymns, Messrs. A, B, Walker, C. D. Martin and John Buchanan were appointed on committee of nominations, and Mesars. Stevens, Irwin and Hoagland on rosolutions, Mr. J. 8. Love read tho report of his labors for the past yeae. He was followed by superintendents and de gates, who gave reports of their indi- vidual schools. These reports were very encouraging and indicated a healthy growth, Rev. J. G. Lemen, delegate from the Council Bluffs Ministerial associa- tion, gave notice of the prohibition convention to be held in the Metho- dist church at Council Blufls on Tues- day afternoon, and on motion the fol- lowing gentlemen were appointed to attend: John Buchanan, of Neola township; C. D. Martin, York town- ship; D. B. Olark, Kaie township; Holland, Neola townshiy; J. O. , Union township; Nelson Lewis, Lewis township, and J. 8. Love, Knox township, The committee on nominations pre- sented the following names fer perma- nent ofticers: D. B, Clark, president; J. 8. Love, permauent secretary; H. M. Stevens, F. E. Hoagland and O. D. Martin, executive committee. On motion the assistant secretary was instructed to cast the ballot of the convention, and the above were declared elected. Mr. A. B. Walker was also unani- mously elected treasurer. The following were elected to at- tend the state Sunday school conven- tion that mects at Webster City on the Gth of June next: Mr. Leander Lodge, Mr. J 8. Love, Mr, and Mrs. H. M, Stevens, Mrs, Don A, Judd, Rev. J. G. Lemen and D. B. Clark, The committee on resolutionsreported the following, which was adopted: Resolved, That the thanks of this convention are due and are hereby tendered to the trustees of the Pres- byterian-church of this city for the use of their church, to the citizens of this place and vicinity for their generous hospitality, to the prees of the county - | apace is none too much as it is well cc large as it is, does not begin to fur- nish the room needed for the great and varied stock, The company have found it neces- Bary to erect large warchouses be- sides. It is used exclusively for wagons, of which an immense num- ber arc handled, the company hand- ling such well known makes as Bain, Schuttler, Buchannan, Jackson and Olds. Another warehouse, 52 by 100 feet, with sheds 20 by 225 feet has been built near the O, B. & Q. depot. Kach of these warehouses is located on a sidetrack and provided with plat- forms and conveniences for loading and unloading cars. The extent of these facilities may bo judged some- what by the statement that the com- pany has in all 87,500 square foet of etoracn voom, Kven this amount of cupled by all 8orts of farim wachivery, implements and extras, in fact, every- thing from the smallest bit of casting to the mammoth nachines, The goods do not stand idly there, for the average thus far this year. through dull as well as busy days, has been a. carload of implements handled every day. The business this year will go beyond half a million dollars. From ten to six- teen men are employed, two teams and trucks are kept busy all the time, and often there are as many as five, and everything and everybady seems astir. Theso voods are scattered all over western Iowa, over Nebraska, into northern Missouri and into Da- kota, giving & wide geld. Much of the success attained has been due to the company having had originally the choice of implementa, and having held to the agency of such as prove to b the best. Besides the makes uf wagons named above, the company has in the line of corn plant- ers, Farmers’ Friend, Brown's, Kvans & Foos’ and Ayery's, They keep the plows and cultivators made by Furst & Bradley, J. OF buggies and carriages there 18 kept here the largest stock west of the Mississippi, one entire floor being devoted to samples only., The Ot- tawa and Sandwich power shellers are being extensively bandled, and the company has a large sale of Coales’ lock lever suky hay rake. From such familiar names as thoso given it is evident that none but first class implements are handled by this company, and by being fair in price for the use of their columns, to the C., R. I & P.
