Cowell arrived this morning and is busy preparing to lay pipe. Shall get our advertise- ment in the papers to-morrow, and next week Saturday or Monday. Your lotter received and also Mr. Pritchert’s, which 1 have read. He is at Columbus attending the state convention, also Dr. Miller. They will return this afternoon at 4 o’clock. At 7 we are to have a caucas of Mil- ler, Pritchett, Shelby, Hascall and myself, Everything looks well for carrying the primaries, both republi- can and democratic. Another car of pipe and spelials arrived tc-day. As Mr. Pritchett is out of town Mr, Cowell's cass #ill come off to-morrow, Hawes will dismiss it under ordinanco 409 and decido that we have a right to lay pipe in the streets of Omaha, Gen. We think he is water works, and ghall be sure of it before we assist him; that thing made sure, we can elect him. Kifth, Dodge, of whom there is no hope; Sixth Ward, J. E. Boyd, strong anti. Am very confident we shall carry it, but to do it we must elect a man from the Fourth ward, Mead is out of town; expected to-night, so that we have the smelting works vote to help us in the Third. Tam very de- sirous of uu-;yiug the two candidates through, and, of course, shall do all I can todose. The fight will be the Bixth and Fourth. Pritchett is managing the whole busindes, and I am keej out the city as much as possible, Cowell still working on the oir and getting ready for pipe y or Wednesday as on the case may be. I shall keeg a t look out, and after the Re- primarios are over Shelby, Prichett, Hascall and myself will de- cide what we willdo and how to do it. T am in the raidst of a fierce fight here, and which I hope to win, but of course T can’t tell until the votes are counted Tuesday evening. 1 think Hascall will go in, although the opposition is very bitter. We succeeded in gz Redman the nomination in the Sixth by 38 ma- jority out of 400 votes polled, and 1 believe we can elect bim. Richards, in the Fourth, will be all right if we can elect him, Pritchett is hope- ful, and I see no reason why we shall fail. The contest will be very cloge and sharp, but we ought to win, and Ibelieve we shall do zo. We shall have two members from the Third ward, cannot tell whether Bar- ney or Blackmore, and Houck. If we can succeed in this we shall have nine members of the new council. T shall telegraph you the result as soon as it is known. It will reach you as soon as this, and thea you will' know all about it. Respectively, J. T. Cusuine, Compan CHAPTER V. It looks as though we would elect him, but Boyd and Stephenson are putting in money and of course wo aro compelled to do the same. If we win it is all right. T am consult- ing with Pritchett and take no steps without his sanction and approval, wish I had you here to advise with, Am keoping down expenses as small as [ can, but they are necessarily large running four wards. As far as I can sce we shall win, and if so it will be cheaper for us than on the old plan. Hilland Hawes are both bleeding us, and we are compelled to stand it. Millard is at home again, and will vote for our man in the Fourth ward against Ken- nard, and uso his influence for him. I wall write to you to-morrow the result of the work to-night, and telegraph to you the election newa as soon as that is known, Pritchett has gone to see Miller, and T will see him later and will do all T can.
