el [ SRR TS i RS T L g THY DAILY BEE COUNGIL BLUFFS. aturday Morning Aprnil 1 A “Office: No. 7 Pearl Street, Near Broadway. C. E. MAYN H. W, TI v ity Circnlation, Eaitor, OPPOSING THE BEE There are tome petty souls whom enter prise and success seem 1o ange: as a red flag doss a bull. Such sou's are ton feehle to bear the weight of & name, and hence we let them go nameless, Some of these have of Iate been straining themselves in puny attempts to ti.ht Tir Beg, not openly ana maufully as becometh h folks, hut slyly and snakely. Lies cluster about their lips like flies about mclasses, and they whisper about in the dark corners that Tie Ber's cireu ation in Council Bluffs is but a handful; thatits editors ure bought up; that it rehashes news; that it—well, there is n- end of the tal T all such we say, keep right on ta kin, Tuk Bee is only helped Dy it, as in a where the charicter of such assailants is as well known as they are here, op: osi fon from them, thus min gled with flimsy false- hopds, is an hon r. Tug BEe is not seeking « foothold in this city. Tt has one. Twk Brr has great faith in Council Bluffs, and the liberality of the advertisers and the multitude of the readers shows that the city has faith in I'ae ¥ ek, Tue liberal policy is the one that wins in a city, and it is the spirit which welcomes, rather than hoots at every hones' enterprise which is started within the limits, The mor: wholesale houses which are started here, the more factories, the more enterprises of any wor- thy kind, the better, and it is 4 aging fact that the majority of ociti- zens are ready to welcme such as i vinced by the heartiness with which they have welcomed the establishment of Tim Bk here. It neems needless to attempt to chase up the city lies which are told by the few envious souls who are slopping over with maliciousness, but those fiiends and or patrons of THE Bee who should chance to desire any facts or explanations in relatin to these aseanlts will find Thr Beg ever ready to frinkly give them, Tr Bk is winning its way into many houses, is gaining friends 1nd supporters daily, and it can « fford to smile upon those who have nought in life but envy. The in- crease in the number, variety and pros perity of iudividual enterprises is what builds up a city, and those who have no- thing to do but whine must stand aside or, be erushed un ler the wheels of progress, .- MINOR MENTIONS encour- —Praug’s Easter car 's at Seaman’s, mchl4djy . —Annie Pixley showed upas Mliss ut Dohany's last evening. —To-night the Swedish Ladios’ quar tette nppears at Dohany's. —To-dy is April fool's day, as many will be doubtless he reminded ere nightfall. —Haverly's Strategists promise to give an entertainment in ttis city April 22, ~Duprez & Berediovs miustrels are booked here for the 7th of April. ~—The Congregational folks had a social last evening at the residence of M, T, F. The Doings Behind the Bars and Be- fore the Bars, Robert Gordon, the young man who stole Mase Wise's rubber hunting boots, and some other articles, and who gave the loser and officers such a wild chase, was yosterday brought be- fore Judge Aylesworth, aud being found guilty was sentenced to thirty days in jail. Bill Probstell, better known as “Dutch Bill,” was to have a hearing yesterday, but it was delayed until to-day, and meantime he languishes. John Pierson, who has gained such a notoriety in convection with the Snodderly case and Hubbard assault, put out for Omaha on his acquittal on the charge of perjury. 'The evidence gathered points to the fact that in- stead of his seeing Snodderly assault and rob Mrs. Hubbard, he was him- self the assailant, and accordingly a warrant has been issued for his arrest on this charge. He was arrested in Omaha yesterday and was brought brought back to this city for trial The case has been very bunglingly handled, apparently, for with what fects were in the possession of the officers soon after the robbery, it seems that sharp work would have re- vealed the real criminal and he would have been brought to justice before this. Lars Jensen, of Boomer township, was yesterday afternoon before Judg> Aylesworth, charged with keeping a horse . which had the glanders, and which caused neighbors’ horses to catch the same disease. There were a large number of witnesses on both sides, Judge Reed yesterday listened to the case of Rosa Empron, a girl of fifteen, whose mother is unable to control her. The judge decided to send tho girl to the reform school, raising rows and smashing furniture in the dugouts in the eastorn part of the city, were yesterday before Justice Abbott, They were Richard Baker, alins Texas, and Del Harris, The evidenco showed that they smashed down a door with an ax, broke up a stove, and raised a row generally. The bail was fixed at $100 each, and not being able to furnish it they were sent to swell the number of boarders at the jail, Ray and McCabe, the two prisoners who have been lying in jail since last LA AL A j& Co, DL UUUINNVIL DLUDES, 1U WY A Transfers of Titles, The following transfers of real estate are reported a taken from the county records by J. Moines, March 27. — Close Bros. & Co. and the Towa Land com- pany are owners of over 160,000 acres of land in Osceola and Lyon counties, Close Bros. are large owners of farms which they operate, and have also sold numerous acres to actual set- tlers, It is tor their interest to have these lands developed and improved as rapidly as possible, Nearly a year ago they made a prop- osition to the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern to build an east snd west road through these coun- ties, The company reached Spirit Lake and there stopped. Becoming satisfied that the Burlington company would do nothing, Close Bros, went to Chicago aud succeeded in interest- ing J. D. Harvey, J. L. Harvey and others in the project. A company was organized which has been incor- poratcd as the Spirit Lake & Western railroad company, with headquarters at Sibley. The object is to baild a railroad from Spirit Lake westerly to same point on the Big Sicux river. The capital stock is §1,800,000. The incorporators are Joel D, Harvey James B, Close, Josiah L. Lombard, Elliott C. Davidson, and Charles J. C. Ball. Chief Engineer Charles P. Westfield and a corp of assistants from Chicage have already arrived on vhe ground and begun a survey of the road, with instructions to permanent- ly locate and drive stakes as they go. 1t is the intention to have the road completed 80 as to move the next farm crope, Since this movement was inau- gurated the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern has begun a survey from Two colored_men, who have beon | gt Tke 40 Sibley and. the pros. 0y, pects are there will be some lively railroad work in that section during the year. The engineer corps stafted out on the Des Moines Northern this morn- ing, and construction will be resumed on this road for the season. It will require about a gonth to complete tracks to the high bridge at the Des Motnes river. hen this is reached, grading will be pushed rapidly to Boone, Judge Love, of the federal court, settled a most vexatious question which frequently arises in railroad construction in this state, and which generally results in litigation, as well a8 robbery. P it REGULATING THE SALOONS A Healthy Change for the Better in Administrative Affairs. The police, acting under the direc- tlons of the new city government, are making an attempt to curb the lawless: noss which has characterized the sa- loons. The ordinances have hereto- fore been allowed to remain as a dead lotter, at least most of the time. With the coming in of the new and the go- ing out of tho old, the lines Fegin to be straightened, The police have been instructed to report all saloons keep- ing open after 11 o'clock at night, and has been doing so without fear or favor the latest being Patrick Lacy's, Hatch and the Ogden House billiard saloon. The next move promised after these warnings is to prosecute «ffenders, The Blue Jay saloon, which has be- come quite notorious, was the scene of 8 row yesterday afternoon, and in. stead of passing over the matter, ar- rests were made of the proprietors, Frank Crow and Frank Gillet, and they were booked for disturbing the peace. This nervousness on the part of Mr. Gould lates from the time Maj. Selover venged himself by throwing him over | the 1ailing in front of a ba-ber-sh He has not yet recovered from the fright, although he and Mr. Selover were fricuds again within a ycar. “By special invitation of Mr. Har ry Hill, to-day I witnessed a scientific set-to between two young ladies. Th little thea're was crowded by sportin. = and others drawn together to sce two young ladies fight with gloves. The gloves, by the way, are not nice, soft gloves, but villisnously hard and cruel, and made to hurt., When the two women stepped forward, Mr. Hill ex hibited the trophies to be battled for a silver cup and a medal— and then yelled ‘Time.’ They were dressed in silk tights, and were muscular and comely. Boston Carrie, the taller of the two, madeafgreatlshow offher know- ledge of the sciencoof boxing, until her little New York antagonist got under her guard and delivered such a stun- ning blow on the nose that she was knocked vver backward. Carrie coun- tered on the other one's lips, and they came to the second round with flushed and bloody faces, Tc describe the rest of the match would be disgusting. It was brutal in the extreme, and I musat say that it is a crying shame that such a thing should occur in a Chris- tian country. I noticed one thing: when the girls were pretty well beat. en up, the men spectators yelled to tho seconds.to pull them apart; but the women who looked on urged them to ‘Fight itout.”” Model Irish Landlords. Chieago Tribune. Among the landlords of Treland who in Englund are esteqmed as model Irish landlords is Mr. Bence Jones, has been wristen up in the press and magssines a8 possessing all the quali- ties which tenants like to find in their superiors, If Mr. Bence Jones, how: ever, is a model landlord, what must the rest be about whom little is said? He has made special boasts of his fair rents, but some of the rents recently came bufore the Land Court. 1In one instance a rent of §410 was reduced to $260, and that, too, upon the evidence of a landlord and land agent, while auother one was cut down from §830 to $400. Some of this model land- lord’s leases also got into the Land Court and failed to meet its approval. One »f them, which she court broke, was forced upon the t:nant by the threat of eviction. It discouraged tenant improvements, placed an arbi- trary measure, on the value of unex- hausted measure, and deprived the ten- ant of any right not merely to assign, but to bequeath his farm so that if the tenant left the farm by will as a provision fo= his wife or child without the leave of the landlord he could en- ter and the lease come to an end. The Earl of Kenmare is another landlord who has been considered a model in England. One . f his leases was made to a tenant named Daniel Shea, who can neither read nor write. It was brought before the Land Court and broken, and in his decision Judge O'Hagan said: ““This isa lease which contains more stringent and more eluborate provi- sions than any lease which has come under our experience and our experience has been very large. 1 don't suppose in any court of equity onthe face of the earth this lease would stand for a mo- ment. There is a declaration in the lease as follows: “The said lessee hereby contracts with the said lessor, his heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns, that his, the said tenavt'’s, heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns shall not make any claim for compensation under any Ipmviuion of the Landlord and tenant (Ireland)act, 1870, it being hereby admitted that the holdings of said lessee in Ireland valued under the stature relating to the valuation of land in Ireland at an annual valuation of not less than £55.” The tenant had not upon the face of the globe a single particle of land ex- cept this holding which is valued at £24, The tenant is an iliterate man, hardly speaking Evglish, He signed his name by a mark, and there is not a preiense that this lease was ever read to him or that any person on his be- half had been consulted, The tenant is an ignorant man and is asked to sign with his mark a lease o' the most elaborate and extremely strin- ent description, containing upon the face of it a destinct and complete mis- eago & Northwestern will be entended northwest this scason by building the surveyed line from Bac City to Cor- rectionville, forty-two miles, and the spur from Ida Grove seven miles, to a connection with the Correctionville line, Sac City is the present terminus of & Elug of the Maple River branch, which was built by the Iowa rail- road land company, who, it is under- stood, will build ti;u road to Correc- tionville, and when completed it will be operated by the Chicago & No.th- western, This will give the North- western some distance the start of the Wabash, which is now at Rockwell City, but will push on s0 soon as the weather permits, either to Sioux City or Sioux F! robably the latter. RACY NEW YORK GOSSIP, Jay Gould and Fis Muscularly In- clined Son—Female Beauties 10 Hard Gloves., - The New York correspondent to the Washington Star wri(u-?o ““The Gould family is looming up in the theatrical line.” One would nat. urally think that Jay Gould knew nothing of such things, but he is said 0 have made the discovery on prowl- ing through the Grand Opera Eloule that there was no greenroom. A theatre, he said without a greenroom, was no theatre. His son, George Gould, is going to superiutend altera- tions in the Grand Opera House, and it has been rumored that he will be associated with Mr, Abbey in the man- sgement of the house. ~Mr. Abbey denies this, ““Young Gould is becoming quite a man about town, and may be seen at boxing-matches and similar places of amusement.
