Elizabeth L. Hume, » well known resident of thin city, left two week ago to visic fiiends in Ontario. She was takon sick and died at Brantford, on Mondyy, Marct 27th, The remains will be brought tothis city for burisl, Funeral notice ereafter, O. B Rankin, formerly of the * Board of T'rade” in this city, und of late in the employ of Mr. Chis, Gabler, of Fre- mont, is in the city en route to Lis home in Chamjagne, Tils, where he bas been summoned by telograph, HS is looking well and was warmly weloomed by his old friends here, The Nail Works Sold. Av10o'clock a m. yesterday the salo of the property belonging to the Omaha Nail Works Company, took place at the office of the United States marshal, Deputy Marshal Allen con- ducting the eale. The first bid was from the First National bank, the holder of the parture, muttering as he went down street, ““‘Well, if that didn't look like a lot of frogs leaping into a pond to escape a stone fired at the crowd, I'm 0o hand at simile,” The boys slowly crept out and one by one by one took a chew from the common fund of fine-cut as the best proventative at hand. The patient was afterward picked up by McClure, and sent to the pest house. John Haarman, who was taken to the pest house Monday, diedat 10:20 a. m., yesterday, probably from lack of attontion during the early stage ot the disease. Col. Houck interred the re- mains at the county farm yester- day. Beyond the fuct that the de- ceased was from Kentucky, nothing particular is known ubuu&{im. FINE HORSE CAR. ‘Which Runs Upon the Rall Aoross the Continent. Attached to the overland train from the west yosterday aftornoon was yollow car which Liad upon its sides the mystic words, “‘Palo Alto,” and which was built by the Contral Pacific ruiirond. Upon inquiry it wasloars that the car was a private one of Ex- Governor Stanford of Califorsia, built by him expressly for horse pasengers. The car inside is divided into ten stalls, all of which are padded and are just wide enough to allow the horscs to stand, At the end of each stall is an arrangement for obtaining water, which is carricd in huge tanks at eithor end of the car, The whole arrangement is most comfortable for the equines cxcopt the narrowness ot the stalls which does not allow the horses an opportunity to lie down, There are difforences of opinion, how- ever, as to the wisdom of allowing a horse to lie down on a car floor wfiel\ the car is in motion, and the builder of this car took the stand up side terday, having a ticket for Mead. While he was waiting about the depot he became acquainted with a nice looking young fellow who called him- self Randall and who very kiudly of- fered to show the stranger a portion of the town. Young Ward was anx- ious to look at the sights of the Gate City, and therefore accompanied his new acquaintance willingly. After wandering about a while they araived at the corner of 1lth and Howard streets, where the so called Rendall wet an acquaintance and the three walked in together. Ina few mowments the acquaintance ‘‘flashed up” & check for $800 purporting to be drawn on the Omaha National Bank, and ¢aked Raudall to change it. The latter was uaable to do that, and ap- pealed to his friend. The young man announced the fact that he had only $14, which was all left him from the amount he left home with, The man who held the check said that amount would be enough to meet his pressing necessities, and he would not turn over the check to Ward until thoy reached the depot, where it might be cashed, and the $14 with a couple of dolluwa for the trouble deducted. Thinking this a pretty 2ood suup Ward went down in.o his jeans and brought forth the noney. At the next corner the new-made acquaintances found it conveniont to step into a saloou and step out of the back door, leaving Ward with tho worthless check. He asked some une where he could get it cashed and then discovered the cheat. The coufidence chaps ase not yet discovered, e The Nebraska National The old Brash building, which has been moved into Twelfth street, is being rapidly fitted up for the tempo- rary quarters of the new Nobraska national bank. A fire-proof vault is being built, counters and railings are being put up, new windows are being ever seen. There is a large area of this olay land which could b: purchased for almost nothing or leased for a nomi- nal sum and which lies right along the line of the Omaha & St. Paul railway. Wood for burning the kilns could be obtained at much less cost than in the city and the man referred to asserts that better brick than any now in use in Omaha could be turned out at at least one-third less expense than elsewhere in this region of coun- try. The owners of the land can give a clear title and he thinks that some live firm ought to take hold and utilize the valuable clay deposit. For sevoral days past applications for the ranewal of liquor licenses Lave been coming in at the city clerk’s of- fice thick and fast. Monday was the closing day for the filing of the samo by those who expected to get their new documents by April 10th, the date of the expiration of all li- censcs at present held by the liquor dealers. The number of applications reaches eighty, a large increase over that ot three months ago, when the first enforcement of the Slocumb law was made. The following is a complote list of the applicants, as taken from the offi- cial records: oreated a panic and wisly took his do- | men. According to my interpretation, supported by theau- thority of the attorney general, every one who can take the oath in section b, pages 22 and 23, can vote. The oath and qualifications in section b explain the ambiguous word voter in the first line of section 4. As to the meaning of the word term “‘the last annual assessment,” it is held that the law makes the assess- ment on the first day of April, and the act of the assessor is not necessary to make a legal assessment. To illus. trate: The law defines what theft is, and it 18 necessary that there should be arrest and conviction before the fact of theft is established. So the law assesses property as it is oh the 1st day of April, and the record made by tho assessor does not add to or take from the fact that the property was logally assessed on the Ist day of May. 1t is not necessary to keep a poll book or any similar machin: ry to » general election. 11 Juts may be collected in any c 1ent manner, and the law dc quire thut they shall be pre or being counted, Be sure 10 ha erything in mind that should be attended to at the an nuel meoting. The question of the tutive expenditure of money should be definitely settled, or else should " not re- ved af- plutuly given into the hands “of ihe | board. If you have coufidence iu| your board, it is well to allow them considerable room for the excrcise of judgment. If you have no coufidence, eay definitely how money must be «x- pended. A litde forethought upon this subject will save mueh trouble and bad feeling 1 the future, It is well to remember that if the proper report is not wade in ume that the district may lose its share of the state apportionment, Be very care- ful to have the report correct.
