Fresont, March 24 the Republican 1 learn that Senator Burns has been echoing the statements made From by “brass-collared editors and machine politicians that the people wero satie- fied with the action of Mayor Boyd and Governor Nance in calling out the militin and United States troops to put down, as they claim, a riet. The fact is the great majority of the people were not in favor of any such action, and they believe it was done for the purpose of drawing the atten tion of the public from the real issue and to cover up the dirty work of the monopolists. T'hey still further believe that these men who were instrumental in bring ing to Omaba the military were di rectly responsible for the murder of | that old gentleman-—Armstrong. The | people beginning to understand matters of this kind a great deal bet ter than they used to. Republicans can now se¢ the slippery hirelings | who infest their party and are not | afraid to treat them asuch. Demo- crats are crowding off the dishonest k cles who are hanging on to their car of progress This is as it should be, and the time is not far far distant when cor- rupt corporations will not hold in their clutches the reins of state gov- ernment Seuator Burns may think it allvery fire to go hand in hand with the po- litical ring of Nebraska, but he will learn when he again comes before the weople as a candidate for office, say state treasurer, that they no longer desire to cast their vote for men who do not represent their rights as labor- ing men, and who will wantonly be- tray them and work ‘‘teeth and nail” to put them in the hands of monopo- lists, bound hand and foot. I know how the people feel on this subject. They are disgusted with the turncont “‘lickspittle” policy of the Herald, and we know the price the Republican sets on its brains. Of course there a few office seekers and railroad officials who dance to the pat of Brooks and Miller, but they are well known and amount to noth- ing outside of their own estimation. If they are capable of an honest thought they dare not express it. Public opinion has made rapid strides toward the right within the last few years. Men who two years ago would not for one instant tolerate Rosewater or the principles he advocated in Tug Darny Bee and view this fight which labor is making for its rights from a humanitarian standpoint. They can now realize the fact that though a man does not command his thousands or ten thousands a year, and though he does not wear broadeloth, that he still has rights which should be re- spected, and should at least be given a chance to earn a comfortable living. So I would say to Senator Burns, ‘‘Beware that you cut not your own in toadying to corporations. A young man by the name of Dan- iel Morgan, a blacksmith by trade, left his home at Glenco, Dodge coun- ty, on the 11th instant; intending to take day’s hunt near Schuyler; was seen at that place last Sunday morn- ing, since which time nothing has been heard of him. He was about 24 years of age, light weight, and was in a mixed tan colored sack coat and pants, buckle shoes and black round-top hat, and was subject to asthma, He came to Glenco last October, claiming that he had former- ly lived in Omaha, His friends en- tertain fears that some accident has befallen him, but as his shirts and a few small tools are missing his credit- ors entertain doubts of his honor anrd houesty, Any information will be gladly received by the undersigned. His weight of five tons, which is not uncommon for an ele- phant, gives no idea of hie real size, for he is not 8o round as his Asiatic fellows, and in truth is slab-sided, gant, big-boned, and tuskless. But his huge proportions offset all defects of figure, and his very unsightliness adds to the impression which he makes on the beholder. Measured at the shoulder Jumbo stands eloven feet high, while the largest elephant in the United States, itis said, measures only an inch more than nine feet. With his trunk Jumbo can take down a biscuit from a height of twenty-five feot. His colossal legs remind one of the butt of a great mest, and his trunk half way down seems as large as the human body of a stout adult. Among the other elephants at the “Zoo" —and large ones some of them are—Jumbo looms up like Goliath among the Philistines.
