Social aud Business Life at Riverton—Snioldes, As- saults and Acoldents. RiverToN, Fremont County, Towa, March 14.—The 11th of July robbery of last year has made Riverton a familiar name with Tur Ber family. But now that Wells, the Missouri outlaw, languishes in the jail of Fre- mont county, and Ris punishment for said robbery of the Fremont bank isa mere matter of time, we may well turn to things of a more novel nature, remarking en passant that Norris, the associate of Wells, having demanded an examination, has been discharged from custody in default of sufticient proof to detain him longer. THE TRAGIC SUICIDE AT SIDNEY, of Joseph McNatt, a notorions saloon keeper of this place, occurre v in his other “‘hali” on Monday last. e had gradually grown dissipated, and only recently was implicated in a arunken row at midnight in' his place The felo do se was accomplished by send- ing a bullet through his brain with a revolver, the ball finding egress near the left: temple. Death rapidly iollowed the shot. His remains were interred in Riverton cemetery on the Oth inst. McNatt's family consisted of his wife and two small children. The unfortunate man was 39 years of age. THE ANNUAL ELECTION of city officers oocurred here last week. A lively interest was taken therein, the business men of the town being unusually active in their, support of the successful Heretofore the opposition had been regarded as invincible. The saloon question was the thorn in the flesh. A mayor, three councilmen, one record- er and one assessor were elected, The town officers are now as follows: Mayor—W. S. Palmer; Trustees, Isaac Smith, J. C. Roberts, 1. R. Kidd, Roland Hoy, J. H. Hough, J. H. Hough, W. T. Yeardy; Recorder, W. M. Williams; Assessor, Thomas Thomson. On the Tth inst., the eflicers elect, duly qualified and entered upon their respective duties. The new council will probably raiso the saloon license trom €300 to $2;000. The same be- ing surrounded with rigid conditions, a breach whereof involving a forfeit- ure of the privilege and the amount paid therefor. ATTEMPTED OUTRAGE. On Saturday evening last between eight and nine o’clock, as two modest and highly accomplished young misses, between 14 and 16 years of age, daughters of one of our best famil- ies, were returning to their father’s house, near one of the principal streets, they were accosted by a burly and lecherous ruffian who seized the elder of the two girls and placed his right hand over her mouth, whereup- on the younger sister made such excel- lent use of her vocal organs as to sum- mon and receive immediate assistance, and forthwith the infamous wretch releasing his innocent prospective prey quickly vanished into the unknown darkness whence he came, A vigor- ous but vain search was instituted, and had the fiend been found Judge Lynch would have disposed of his case in a summary manner. SINGULAR ACCIDENT, Last week a singularly unfortunate accident befeli Mr. Geo. W. Jackson, brother-in-law. of your esteemed townsman, Aug. Waddell. As. Mr. J. was crossing Sumner avenue on K street he shipped slightly, then his an- kles becoming suddenly weak, doubled under him and he fell to the ground, breaking the fibula of the left leg. He was engaged in moving on the day of the accident, having come hither a day or two previously from Hamden Junction, Ohio, PROGRESSIVE Riverton is now exhibiting unuswal thrift and business advancement, and its citizens generally are people of energy, intelligence and good morals, Many of the merchants are already recoiving their spring goods, and are also ‘‘brushing up” their stores gen- erally, agreeably to the coming of the vernal goddess of whom poets and others sometimes sing, Noticing last week a long line of beauticully constructed and neatly painted farm wagons proceeding from the station to the well known Iumber and wagon depocof Porry & Williams, T inquired of ihe presidug genius of said firm tho meaning thereof, and and was informed that these wagous were made at South Bend, Ind., and were known to fame as the “‘Coquil- lard,” the same being the favorite farmers’ wagon, and in constant de- mand, The two banks, the Fremont County and the Nishna Valley, are doing & thriving business; people pa- tronize them, and the town is proud of them, for the reason that said are doing business on a safe financial basis, and are officered by genial and accommodating, yet sagacious, gentle- men, F. M. Trobie & Co., dealers in ger- eral merchaundise and millinery goods, are busy members of the Bek Five; well informed in regard to the mar. kets, their store is a commercial Mesca bk The soil of tnis county, aud in the immediate vicinity of “Riverton, is nneurpassed for agricultural wealth, The educational advantages of our towu are excellent, and pupils from abroad are in attendance upon the city schools, On Monday of this week the people voted a tax not to exceed 2,000 with which to improve and enlarge our present school edifice. This liberal vote is highly creditable to our people, The postmaster at Riverton is J. M, Buard, who is a eompetent and popu- lar official. He assumed the office at the commencement of the present year. His predecessor, Mr, E. Smith, is the capable cashier of the Nishna Valley bank, John Daviee, of the Fremont Coun- ty bank, is in Gloucester, England, ticket. | as United States consul at that place Mr. T. J. Brant, ex-superintendent of schools of this county, and one of the proprietors of said bank, is the efficient cashier thereof and general manager. Among the leading houses of our town may be mentioned the fine drug establishments of Clark & Roberts and Osborne Bros.; the well stocked grocery store of J. H, Hough and Calfee & Anderson; and the zmn.hr dry goods and general stock of Clark & Roberts and Marvin & Williams Goorge Lerew is the favorite jeweler. Thatcher’s hardware house is largely patronized. J B. Christian’s cultural implement emporinm and depot for repairs, under the capable management of George Beach is crowded daily with the wide-awake farmers and progressive farmers. R. Hoy & Co maintain an excellent livery. New York Post, Congress has probably never done anything mcre ambitious in the way of huncombe than the passage of a bill by the Senate creating a commis- sion to examine the connection of the liquor traflic with revenue, taxation, crime, pauperism, social vice, the pub- lic health, and general welfare. There is probably no social question which has been so thoronghly examined as the liquor question. T'hera is none on which such a mass of statistics have been eollecred It is well established that drink is the cnuse of a very larce pat of all the crime and pauperism there is in the Western world. Tt is well known that a large—very large--revenue an be, and is riisod from it by civilized nations, In England nearly one-quarter of the national income comes from it. That excessive drinking is injurious to the individual health and morals is also so well settled that no rational person [ventures to deny it. Whether moderate drinking is injuri- ous to the health or not is a point on which doctors and physiogolists are greatly and apparently hopelessly di- vided, and no re-examination of them by a congressional commission would do anything but make confusion worse confounded. Opinions on'this sub- ject, as on all questions of health, are and must be greatly affected by in- dividual experience, and individual |, experience abont alcohol, as about to- bacco, will always vary greatly, just as it varies greatly about cucumbers. All the doctors in the world cannot persuade a man who likes cucumbers, and knows they agree with him, that they are bad for him. The only question connected with the liquor traffic that a legislature can hope to throw light on by inquiry, ia the question whether moderate drink- ing promotes excessive drinking, and whether, if so, all drinking can or ought tc be suppressed, or nearly suppressed, by legislation, The only country in which any experiment has been made in this direction is the United States, and it would be inter- esting to know for certain what the result has been—a subject which is at present envelopea in fog. In fact, we doubt much whether this last point is not the only one on which official in- quiry can do us any good, because, touching the consequences of mederate drinking, we should havé torely much on the experience of foreign countries, in which moderate drinking prevails extensively; and this an American comimission is not likely to be able to investigate with any profit. “There’s Nothing Like Them,” DAyENPORT, IA., June 2, 1881, H. H. Warner & Co.: Sirs—I suf- fered for years with weak kidneys, biliousness and constipation. Your Safe Kidney and Liver Cure and Safe Pills relieved all theee trcubles; in- deed there's nothing like them. mchl3wlw, Magris F. GREELEY. Silver and Gold. Helenw Herald If it is true that our silver dollars of 4124 grains is worth more propors tionally with gold than thesilver coins of any other nation, why is not this an argument for reducing the quantity of gold in our coins? If silver is the worthier standard let gold conform to it. Our country produces both metals in ubout equal proportious, and why should we discriminate in favor of the one and against the other in our mar kets? We do not cheat anybody out- side of the United States. Oursilver dollars are only hullion when sent |- abroad, just as the silver coins of Eu- rope are with us. If we were con- vinced that the present relative value of gold and silver were to continue, we should certainly urge that our conage should represent this relative value and that the coizage of both should be unrestricted. There is talk of convening another monetary congress, butuntil England and Germany will unite in the call, it would be felly. Just in proportion as wo mauifest less anxiety in the mattor, little doubt now that a lurge majority | of business men in both England and Germany favor the remonetization of silver. The United States by the rapid increase of its wealth, the swoll- ing volume of its commerce, and the fact that it produces so large a pro- portion of the precious metals, will 800n have the power to dictate on this subject to all the rest of the world. | It can uever be of any advantage to us to try to bull the world’s market of either gold or silver; what we should add to one would be taken from the ether, and we would not be one penny richer for the change, —— Nows. Ma Hop Bitters, which are advertised in our columns, are a sure cure for ague, billiousness and kidney com- anguid, with o | plaints, Those who use them say they cannot be too highly recom mended. Those affiioted should give thera a fair trial, and will become thereby onthusiastic in the praise of their curative.- Portland Argus.
