The direct cause of death was blood poisoning. He had been recent- ly vaccinated, and - about a week ago he was thrown from a buggy and his arm broken and badly injured. This injury, together with the condition of the arm re. sultiog from vaccination, caused a poison- ing of the blood, and, despite the skillful assistance of physiciavs and the tender care of family and friends, death followed. Conduc'or Thurber had for years been in the employ of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railway, and was most highly es- teomed by the company, Ho was also & man who made many and true friendships, and his death has called forth many ex- pressions of sadness, and many of sympa- thy for the wife and three children, who have thus been deprived of a true husband and father. The funeral will take place at Creston. The remains are to be taken there by a sprcial train, leaving here Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, with ac- commodations for friends to the number of - hundred and fifty, The quaanon ngnntmg social circles in Memphis is whether a young man drawing a salary of $60 a month, or thereabouts, should be expected to pay $0 or $10 for hack hire every time he invites the dainty daughter of some hundred-thousand-dollar aristo- crat to accept his escort to the theater, Many young people of both sexes are writing letters to the newspapers ahont i*, but thera seems tn he great diversiy f opiion On o dudignaut girl suys: “‘Does iv not exhibit a lack of the qualities which ‘constitute one's right to the title of gentleman to complain of the paltry expenditure involved in conyeying & lady fo and from theopera in a carriage! They ought not even be admitted to an ,|8equaintrnce among our first-class !| families, much less be deemed fit escorts for duughturu thereof, These are my sentiments,” Another, a fair maiden with an eye to the almighty dollars invested in good clothes, ejaculates: “For my part, I don't want the kind of beau who can't offer a car- riage to the opera. What right has any gentleman to ask me to bestow the pleasure of my company without pullm(\hlmle'l to some expense for mel Why should a clerk, on a 850 salary, seek to go into m.omty where 850 counta for little? They are only too wullmglu accept the protection of young gentlemen's escort to the opera, and trust to chance, the stroot-cars, and good street-crossings to get to the theater. We don’t want them to imy hack bills for us.” he young men are watching the discussion with an enormous amount of interest, IRISH PATRIOTISM. Demonstrated by the Kemittance of Nearly $500,000 from America to Ireland 8ince January, 1881. Now York Tribune, Itis impossible not to admire the to devotion of the Irish in America their fellow-countrymen in Ireland. They demonstrate it in the most eincere of all ways by liberal contributions from their not overflowing pockets, The Tresurer of the National Land League Fund announces that he has recoived and travnsmitted Mr. Pat- rick Eagan, in Paris, since Jan, 13, 1881, $201,233.82. Tho amount sent through The Irish World, which repre- sents the other branch of the League organization, during the same period, is 8264,766.20. Here we have a to- tal of nearly half a million dollars sent from this country to Ireland within little more than & year. No aecount of its destribu- tion is rendered, the only statement ever made by him beiuy that the bulk of it is invested in first class American railway seourities. Tne ivcome from the investment is devoted primarily to the support of professional agitators in Ireland and elsewhere, How far the sufferers from that agitation are benefited by it no ove knows., In ad- dition to the sums mentioned, it is claimed that Messrs. O'Connor and Healy and Father Sthcehy raised $80,- 000 during their recent lecture tours throughout this country. We have no doubt this is an exaggerated state- ment; but doubtless half that amount was colleted. Mr. Eagan says in a letter to the President of the Nation- al League that he received over $100,- 000 from America in the month be- tween Jan. 7 and Feb. 7 These are large figures, and it is not surprising’that the Catholic Church in America finds its charitable work al- most at a standstill through lack of contributions. Love of country has proved more powerfui than love of Church. The appeals of professional agitators, made in the name of patriot- ism, are more moving than the exhor- tations of the priets. We believe that there is a mistake, and that the end will not be an improvement in the condition of the people of Ireland, but the facts exist nevertheless. What is to be done with the money in case the Land Act proves to be acceptable to the majority of the tenants, and agitation fails of its end, no one pretends to say, The contri- butions are made blindly and as the contributors seem to have unbounded faith in the receivers of the funds there is no especial reason why other people should worry _about the mat- ter. Fremont appears now as the claimant of an important island in the harbor of San Francisco, His petition has Leen filed in senate, and, as he spe- cially asks that the merits of the claim may be tested in the court of claims, there is reasou for supposing that he has some other standing than a mere grabber. The island is known as Al- cantra, . When he was military gover- nor of the territory of California, in 1847, he purchased this island for 'the United States because he considered its situation as of great consequence for the protection of the harbor, The government re| sudiated the pur- chase, and when Fremont was tried by court-martial, in 1848, one charge against him was that the purchue of the island was an assumption of pow- er upon his part amounting to an act of mutiny against the govermment, In 18566, the same year, by the way, in which he was an unsuccessful can- didate for the presidency, he claims hat Le completed the purchase on his own account, Findirg the island to be the key of tha harbor and indis- ensibly neccessary as a site fora flght house and a fort, the govern- ment, without his consent and without the proffer of cowpensatiou, then took possession of the island and has held 1t ever since. 1If the claim is a just one, it is odd that the general has premitted it to slumber so long. 8ins of the Fathers Visited the Children.
