“A DEVIL A MONK."” A Priestly Pretender Arrested and Lodged in a Chicago Police Cell, Strange Adventures of a Man Who Has Impoeed on the Highest Church Dignitaries. Ohicazo Times. An important arrest was made Fri- day night by Officer Franzer, of the Larrabee streot station, in the person f “Rev.” Gaston De Rehan, one of the’most accomplished adventurers in the country. De Rohan is wanted at Jefferson City,Mo. to serve out a five- ear term for forging the name o H. von der Landen, a Catholic ecolesiastic of St. Louis, to an order for $200. He was arrested and con- vioted in 1879, At the penitentiary he “‘got in the good graces” of the of ficors and was wade guard in the hos- pital. In the fall of 1880 he escaped, in company with two other prisoners. Hin real name is Adam Gorter. Gorter's career has been a remarka- bls one, He was born m Holland in 1850, and _when a boy he crossed the LR OMA A DALY BT FRIDAY . MARCH 10 184 sharp lookout was kept. In the even ing, Officer Frauzer caught a glimpse of him as he was getting on a street- car at Market street near the Broth ers’ hospital, and the arrest was made. Gorter took hie arrest quietly. Last night, in conversation with a reporter for the Times, he asserted that since his escape from the peni- tentiary he had led an honest life. He gave a most interesting description of his adventures and re Iated his success in personating pries'ly characters with evident relish. He was inclined to take a pessimistic view of his future, and, deplored the fact that his endeayors to follow the path of honesty resulted in disaster, while his attempts in the line of foreigu countsand ecclosiastics had been highly successful, and kept him always sup- plied with money. Gorter is an ac- complished linguist, speaking six or seveon languages. A clear-cut face and a pair of the keenest of gray eyes give him the appearance of one abun dantly able to follow the course of swindling which he has pursued so successfully. He had photographs of himself in several of his ecclesiastical habits, which presented a decidedly cferical appearance. In his valise he had the vestments worn by the high- est dignitaries of the Catholic church, Last night a telegram was received from the chief of police at St. Louis, ocean and entered a Catholic school in Nova Sestia, tostudy for priest- hood. *He passed through all the grades of study pr:snnlm to ordina- tion. He returned to France and there' forged the paper necessary to gain' recognition from the church au- thoritories, and then went to Italy, where_he lived for two or three years under the patronage of the church ec- clesiastics. Gorter was next heard of in Savoy, France, in 1874, where he served two years in prison-—on what charge could not be learned. Since his release he has personated different dignitaries of the Catholic church in Kurope and America, and has also, at times, gone under the guise of a foreign nobleman, In 1876 after his release from the Savoy pri- son, he turned up in New Orleans as Viscount A. ae Gortens, and succeed- ed in hoodwinking a number of tuft- hunters in that city. He was next heard of in Galveston, Tex , where he had resumed his priestly garb. His exploits during the year were little less than marvelous in their number and the success with which he carried them on. At Kansas City he ‘‘work- ed for afew daysas Dr. de Douge, aud there changed his title to the Ba- ron d' Alonzo, Various towns in Kansas and Missouri were honored by his presence, he passing under a doz- en aliases. The skill with which he had forged the papers he always pre- sented to the ecclesiastical authorities, and his consummate audacity, kept him from any exposure. During this period he is known to have officiated at mass on different ve- oasions, In the fall of 1877 he was heard from at Ostend, Belgium, where' he represented hiiself to be the voadjutor of the archbishop of 8an Francisco. Heshortly afterward returned tv America, and pased a few days at Troy, N. Y., where he assum- ed, ‘the unromantic title of Norman Bweenéy, D. D. Thence he drifted to Savaunah, Ga., and from, thence to Montreal; Can., always keeping his priestly character and a plentiful sup- ply of aliases.' From Ounada Gorter again shifted nis quarters to the west, | ¥ and visited Denver, Lattle. Rock, Omabw; Austin, Tex., Memphis, and 8t. Louis, While at 8t. Louis he is said to have officiated a fow weeks as pavish priest. The Oatholic ec. olesiastics there had no suspicion of his true character till his forgery was discovered. After his eacape Irom the penitentiary at Jefferson City, Gorter, according to his own story, wandered on foot to Sherman, Tex,, where he rocured a horse and followed the Rio rande down into Mexico, acting dur- ing the journey the role of a ranger. He next visited Honduras, and from there went to Cuba, serving on board a ship as steward. By the same means he reached Halifax. While there he resumed his former plan of operations, and succeeded in imposing on the Catholic community, He is even said to have assisted in the ordination of an archbishop at that place. Gaining the confidence of a lady under the' guise of a monk, he stole $800 from her. News of his fresh exploits reached St. Louis, and steps’ were taken to secure his return, His extradition papers weresigned by President Garfield last summer, and are said to be the only state papers to which the president aflixed his signa- ture after Guiteau's shot was fired. Some flaw in them, however, enabled Gorter to remain in Canada, For some reason he was not prosecuted for the theft of the 8300, and shak- ing the dust of Halifax from his feet he started on a tour through the provinces, which finally brought him to Manitoba, The climate, he says, was too cold there, and he determined to return to Franco With this intention he came through Dakota, and stopped a fow weeks at the retreat of the Trappist wonks, wear Dabuque, Towa, He cume to Oineago sbout a week ago, on his way to New York, and his presence in the city has been the meuns of brnging his promising career to & close. Whils here, he utup‘md at the hospital of the| [, Alexian Brothers, on North Market street, representing himself as a mem ber of one of the Catholic orders of monks, He gave his name as Victor von Arrenberg, and in an. swer to the question of the brothers statod that he had Twen in this country six months, "The cas. with which he spoke the language aroused the suspicion of the brothers, and they wrote to 8t. Louis for infor- mation. Friday wmorning a letter and Hhuwgnph were recoived, giving his istory « far as ic wus known, L the W & i Gorter had improved his opportunines and had been out on soveral begging expeditions, At S, Michnel’s church he secured u very suug little sum, At - the Jesuit church, on Twelfth sireet, ho saw a member of the order whom he had known in 8¢ Louis, and he chuyges his arrest to him. The foar of being recoguized evidently hastenod his plau of departure, and e annownced his intention of leaving for New York Friday, He tried to bor- row money from f;rmhw Aloysias, of the hospital, but was refused, and said he would call again in the cven- ing before leaviug. The photograph and - description reccived from St Louis were at once placed in the hands saying that Gorter was wanted there badly, and asking that he be sent as soon as possible, He will leave this morning under the charge of Officer Franzer, and.to-morrow he will be where his greatest triumphs as a per- sonator of ecclesiastical offices were reaped. ettt Maine Nows. Differences in the Treatment, Their Work and Their Wages. The Amerlcan, In a recent article condemnatory of vails to servants, a New York contem- porary alluded to the low rate of re- muneration for domestic service in England as being an excuse which could not be pleaded here for the “‘tipping” practice. Wages there do not, it is true, average nearly so high as they do here; but they are higher there than in any other European country, and the wages of upper ser- vants and of cooks would compare favorably even with those here. Be- sides this, 1t is fair to add that the condition of servants in gentlemen's families there is, for the most part, decidedly superior to that in houses of the same class here. A significant would, unless the family were excéed- ingly small, be aghast at the idea of having no_kitchen-maid, whilst she would give warning on the spot if ex- pected to assist in the family washir g, which, unless a laandry maid be kept, is almost invariably putout, e Many persons here are so much given to. grumbling about servants, that it is as well to point out that here is another side to the question, We are too apt to regard high wages as a compensatton for . everything. Many excellent servants prefer a com- fortable, homelike place, with moder- ate wages and sympathetic treatment, to one without the latter, though ear- rying for mora liberal remuneration, Balm in Gflead. Mar.7d-1w - EXTRAURDINARY ENDURANCE, A Man Lives Four and a Half Months “ With a Piece of Iron in_His Head. _ Greene N, Y. Amerioan, Leonard E. Spencer, of North Fen- ton, Broome county, while out hunt- ing squirrels in company with a friend on the 8th of October last met with a singular, and what proved to be a fa- tal accident. The young man, his companion, discharged his gun and it exploded, and the tube and cylind r entering Spencer’s skull near the tem- ple. Drs. Burr, of Binghamton, and Greene, of Chenango Korks, some- what enlarged the external wound, finger ita whole length into the cavity of the cranium, but were unable to find the fragment of the gun, although cal condition, but contrary to their expectation, his general condition im- about and visited a friend somne dis- tance from his residence, but from on some bad symptoms. Dr. B. L. Houghton, of this village, was called the 1st of November, and was able to give him some relief, and from that time his general condition seemed to improve until nearly the day of his death, he being able to do some work, even working on the 20th of February his death ocourring the following day. Being anxious to know the real condi- tion of his bramn, Dr. Houghton was permitted, through the kindness of his friends, to hold an autopsy, assist- ed by Dr. Carr, of Chenango Forks. The autopsy confirmed ,the previous conclusions, that the cylinder and tube of the gun was still in the wound, being found imbedded in the bran substance inside of the mem- proof of this is found in the fact that good Euglish servants, with the excep- uon of grooms, rarely care to come here. We have Irish, Germauns, Swedes, Italians in plenty; but few English. A wealthy New Yorker who imports his man-servants direct from England, after most careful in- quiry as to character, can rarely get them to stay more than & couple of ears. They miss what are to them the joys of life. There is, in fact, no doubt that an Englilh man-servant coming here, while he gains in money loses in all else. In the first place, duties are usually exacted from him which in England are performed by women, and which he despises as women's work. He i3 expected to sweep a room and wash doorsteps, tasks from which his soul recoils. Then, he has to do twice as much work as he would have to do ut home; for the first thing which an Englisman notices in an American household, even of the wealthiest grade, is what seems to him the extraordinary small number of servants, and the ‘‘en papillotes” con dition in which the houses of many rich men are when taken a little by surprise. A visitor to New York, go- ing to leave a lotter of introduction at the house of a very fashionable mil- lionaire in Madison square, rang twice before the door was opened by a dirty drab of a char-woman, who imprinted her mlslllldl{ autograph on his | card, whilst she left him standing in the passage, to his indignation and amaze- ment, Nor is this s0 extreme a case as many migkt imagine. A lady liv- ing in the wealthieat and most fash- ionable New York society says that in half the houses on Fifth avenue, if she should chance to call on a non- branes and on the floor of the middle fosgn of the skull, nearest the anterior portion, Dr. Houghton has the cyl- ender and tube, which are eonnected in one piece, and also the brain, in his possession, How a human beimng could live four months and fourteen days with a piece of iron weighing ubout three-quarters of an ounce in his brain is a mystery to us, For Coughs, Colds, and Throat Dis- orders, Use ‘“‘Brown’s Bronchial Troches,” having proved their efficacy by a test of many years, marl0-deod1w EDUCATIONAL NOTES.
