The Bssax Gazette of 1773---All About the Historical Tea, Etc, | Stan'slsus. Whea ~Grower Mr. F. A. Sawyer, of this place. has a volume of Tho Kssex Gazette for 1773, which has been handed down from generation to generatlon, and is still in a fuir state of preservation, al- though the leaves are yellow with age. He was offered 8350 for the use of them during the Centennial, but re fused to ncoept it. The heading of the first copy reads “The Hssex ( zotte. Containing the freheft Advices both foreign and domestic. VOL VI. NUMB* 267. From Tuefday, August 31, to Tuefday, Septomber 7, 17 Sa ewi: Printed by Samuel and Ebenezer Hall, at their printing office near the town Houfe.” Mr. Sawyer has very kindly permitted us to extract as follows: ‘“‘Lettera from Alexandria announce the return of Mr. Bruce, a learned English traveler, who had made a tour to Abyflinia, from hence he has brought ceveral rare birds and aquan- tity of different feeds, one of which produces & grain proper to make bread.” —Vol. 6, No. 17. The small boy and didn’t-know-it- was-loaded pistol, flourished in those days. Witness tho following para- graph. “On Tuefday laft a fmall boy about eight years of age, fon of Mr. William Barney of this town, was playing with a piftol, which unfortunately happened to be loaded, it accidentally discharged itself, whereby Mr. Barney, the father who was fitting near, received fo ter- rible a wound in the fide, that after languifhing about 48 hours he expired to the great grief of his family and friends. He wasa man of unblem- ished character and a valuable memb- er of fociety.—[Ibid. London, June 16, We hear that the bill now drawing up by the noble law Lord (Lord Mansfield) with re- spect to difpofal of criminals, willcon- t1in, among other things, that no per- fou hereafter be tranfported to the e)lonies but be either fent to ferve in the Eaft Indies, or be fhut up fora certain term or for life, in ftrong houfes, four of which are to be erect- ed in every county, where thofe who are not bred to trades are to be kept to hard labor. This regulation is faid to be in confequence of a remonstrance from the provinces of Virginia, Mary- land, and Conneticut, complaining of the inundation of vagabonds from Great Britain and Ireland. By a gentleman juft from America, we learn that Bofton is at prefent in as much confufion as at the time of the Stamp-Act, and that the whole continent was likely to be in a flame. —[Ibd. The weight of bread was regulated by law, and an order says that all loaves of bread selling for a penny must weigh 0 pounds, 6 ounces, and 3 drams, The following bit of advice to the ladies appears in the issue of Nov. 30, 1773: 8 “LADIES: However cooly fome of you may now efteen your husbands, it might be worth while to consider whether by your abandoning that ac- curfed TEA, you will vrefer your country and profterity in peace and good order, or expofe. twenty-five thoufand of them to fpill their bloed in defemnce of their undoubted birth- right.” The following is an account of the throwing overboard of the obnoxious tea: BorroN, 17th Dec., 1773. ‘‘Yefterday we had a greater meet- ing of the Body than ever. The coun- try coming in from Twenty Miles round, and every Step was taken that was practicable for returning the Teas. By order of the Commit- tee, etc, Every device and wicked machina- tion of our enemies feems now to be defeated, and a kind Providence fmiles upon the efforts of this country to preferve its Rights and Liberties, The Tories have in time paft boafted that the Province of New Hampfhire was on their fide; but the manly and patriotic proceedings of the People in that Province will convince the World they are AMERICAN FREEMEN, and are fired with the glorious Spirit of Freedom which lightens this West- ern World, A writer in _one of the Southern Papers propofes that the Watchmen be inftructed, as they go their Rounds, to call out every night, “Parr TWFLVE 0'CLOCK, BEWARE OF THE EAFT-INDIA CoMPANY!"” We will, with Mr, Sawyers per- mission, make further extracts in the future, R ST Escaped from the Toils. John Bacon, Laporte, Ind,, writes: “‘Hurrah for SPrING BLossoM; it's all you recoumeud it to be, My dyspepsia has sll vanished, Why don't you advertise it! ‘What allowance will you make if I take a dozen bottles, so that I could oblige my friends occ sionally?” Price 50 cents, trial bottles 10|:antm_ fe:8-ecdlw Dilatory Lovers, The impatience of the ents of the young lady over the long and truitlass visits of the chronic callerwas pictured in comic colors some years ago by a fuuny writer. It seems that it was miduight. The young man had farewelled himselt out, and Emeline had locked the door and was untying her shoe when her mother came down- irs with a bedquilt around her, and said: ‘“Wanted to creep up-stairs without my hearing you, eh? Dind’t think I knew it was an hour after midnight, did you?” The girl made no reply, and the mother continued: . ““Did he propose this time?” ““Why, mother!” exclaimed the daughter, *You can ‘why, mother,' all you want to, but don’t I know that he has been coming here for the last year! Don't I know that you've burned up at least four tons of coal courting around heret” The girl got her shoes off, and the mother stood in the stair door and asked “Emelino, have you got any grit?" “T guess 80," “1 guess you haven't, T just wish that fellow with false teoth and a mole on his chin would come sparking me. Do you know what would happen, Emeline!” “Weliy T'l tell you. He'd come to time in sixty days or he'd get out of this mansion like a gost jumping for sunflower seeds.’ And Emeline went to bed hugging this thought to her bosom. Occasionally such visits become so burdensome that the young lady talks to the young man herself At least théy had such a girl out in Colorado. She had been receiving the attentions of a young man for about a year, but becoming impatient at his failuro to bring matters to a crisis, she resolved to ascertain his intentions. When he next called she took him gently by the ear, led him to a seat, .mg said: *‘Nobby, you've been foolin’ 'round this claim tur mighty neara year, an’ hev never yit shot off your mouth on the marryin’ biz. I've cottoned to yer on the square clear through, an’ hev stood oft’ every other galoot that tried to chip in; au’ now I want yer tu come down to business or leave the ranch. Ef you're on the marry and want a pard that'll stick rite to ye till ye pass in your checks an'the good Lord calls ye over the range, just squeal, an' we'll hitch: but ef that ain't yer game, draw outan’ give some other fellor a show fur his pile. Now, sing yer song or skip out.” He sang. Beds of Down Feel Hard. All beds seem hard to the Fheumatic. Then harken, evish sufferers! Ap- rio O1L to your aching jomts and muscies. Toronto Globe. One of the many suggestions of our late popular governor general, Lord Dufferin, was that the governments of the Dominion of Canada and of the state of New York should by united action purchase and expropri- ate the land adjacent to Niagara Falls, and form and control an inter- national park for the purpose of pre- serving in its natural beauty and grandeur the scenery at the falls, and at the same time of making points of interest accossible to the tourists and others without the imposition of the extortionate charged which are now therule. Actingon that suggestion negotiations took place between the two governments. A bill was mtro- duced into the New York legislature at two sessions, but was thaown out, and consequently America coopera- tion is out of the question. At the session of 1880 an act was passed through the Ontario legislature em- powering the minister of-public works of the Dominion to take lands along the banks of the Niagara river for the purpose of forming such apark. How- ever, the Dominion minister of public works has not exercised the powers conferred upon him, and it is now thought that private enterprise should take the project in hand, and carry it out in a manneras nearly as possi- ble similar to the original scheme. For that purpose a company is being formed of gentlemen resident on Eng- land, Montreal, and Toronto, who have a bill before the legislature ask- ing that the powers counferred npon the ;ninister of public works shall be transferred to them. The bill received its first reading in the house on Thursday. T'he territory propose. to be ac- quired extends from the head of the rapids above the burning spring to a point below the whirlpool, about sev- en hundred yards below the Clifton house embracing about three and a half miles of river frontage, and an area, about 140 acres. It is pro- posed to remove all the unsightly structures at present standing, but re- taining the Table Kock house, the Museum, and the Clifton house. Hitherto the point below the falls has been 8o inaccessible that few have been able to realize the sublimity of the scenery at that place, but, to make it easy of access, a tramway, with a guage of two feet, to be run by steam or other power, is to be con- structed to the water's edge. It will be 8o concealed by occasional clumps of foliage, tunnels, or rock erections as not to disfignre the beauty of the locality, By fiuving a guage of two feet, it is hoped that all difficulties of construction and offenses to the eye will be avoided, and the people con- veyed go that fuller and mearer views of the whirlpoolZand rapids can be af- forded - views which now cost so much fatigue and risk. There will a'so be another tramway from the burning spring to the south of the whirlpool. Below the Clifton house it will be ‘about three-hundred feet back from the edge of the cliff. The present carriage way will also be moved back, so that the annoyance of incessant driving and dust will be re- moved. Accomodations will be pro- vided for leisurely visiting various points of interest, the charges for transport bein; good views of the locality observato- ries ot iron will be erected, and fitted with elevators, balconies, and plat- forms. An inclined plane will be conatructed at Table Rock to move visitors up and down the bank, and to enable them to go under the sheet of water at the falls, The present stair- case will be dispensed with, and steps cut in the rock for people to reach the bottom of the gorge free of charge. The foregoing are the principal works to be undertaken, but in addi tion the grounds will be thoroughly underdrained and laid out in walks and drives, and made as attractive as pessible to visitors. “Tho erection of one or more hotels similar to the celo- brated beach hotels of the United States may also be undertaken, as well as the placing of a small steamer on the river. Restaurants at suitable points, and shops for the sale of fancy goods will be erected. Accomodation will be provided for picnic parties. and for the carrying on at them of all sorts of games and athletic sports, which wilf add to the attractions, Tt is the intention of the company to beautify the grounds as mnuch as pos- sible and make a visit to the falls a source of pleasure.
